    The water container should be food-grade bpa free material, doubt that is since its intent was for item storage. Depending on the volume it will hold, an aquarium heater may not be the best option. You want to look for a product that is rated to heat the total volume you are able to store. There are bucket heater elements that do essentially the same thing but can output much more heat, but keep in mind the container is plastic and you want the heater to only heat up to the point where the water is not going to freeze, and not be boiling. The other thing to note is if you have a watering system like this, you want to circulate the water so the lines do not freeze, so a pump is important. Placing the watering bar at a slight pitch with the outlet being higher will allow any potential air to be moved back to the container. To save on money and make a bit more automated, you can buy for about $15 a thermostatically controlled outlet which just plugs into your outlet where you intend to plug in the heater, and it will turn on if the temp drops below 38f and off once it hits 50f.

    Where do you get the little nipples that you tied into the PVC?? And also what about those water heaters inside of the tote? We live in Wyoming just yesterday was -54゚ F with windchill.

    • @HelixCreations
      @HelixCreations ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get the chicken nipples from an IFA type of store or even Amazon. I use an aquarium heater inside the tote along with a filter. The filter is just to move the water since moving water freezes at lower temps.

    If you double your container and put spray insulation in between the two totes before you drill your holes you should come up with a system that will not freeze for the first day or two of a bad cold spell. Like your pvc method though. Cheers!

    Been a couple years since this video; how well did the heater work in the cold? Was it able to maintain ok? If not how cold was it when it failed to keep the water from freezing?? Any other issues worth noting at this point? Like the concept. I already built something similar for my meat birds but for summer use. Wanting to upgrade to take care of my layers. Thanks!

    • @HelixCreations
      @HelixCreations 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works pretty well, I haven't paid close enough attention to the temperature. Typically if the water does freeze its because the cord was accidentally unplugged. Only other issue is letting the water get too low and burning out the filter.

    • @HelixCreations

    Not bad, the only recomendation i'd say is to use a large old igloo cooler instead that has a lid. I got my cooler for almost free. Much harder for it to freeze since it's insulated. Plus in the summertime can throw a bunch of ice in there and then the chickens get nice cool water that lasts a good while.

    • @HelixCreations

      The small pump is to keep water circulating in the PVC header. The filter and pump run continuously. Moving water lowers the freezing point. The heater kicks on by a temperature controlled switch.

      @@HelixCreations Just a few other questions- how often do you need to replace the filters? Would you happen to have a parts list for the sizes and types of the PVC pipes you used? I saw you had only 2 of the poultry nipples on there- I assume you could add more than two with one that size, or would that affect how it works at all? We got our first flock of 22 layers and 5 broilers, so for the larger group I think I would need more than 2 to make sure they all can get a drink without some of them hogging it. LOL Thank you!

    • @HelixCreations
      @HelixCreations 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've replaced it once, but probably should have done it more often. It was 2" PVC, I don't have a parts list, it'll be dependent on your situation. It would be just fine to add more nipples, they work off gravity and not pressure so you'd be able to add as many as you'd like, I think. Congratulations on your new flock!

    Looking to build something similar. I am sure the water in the tote will not freeze, but my concern is that there will be freeze up in the smaller line beneath the tote or in the nipple itself. Have you had any of those issues?

    • @HelixCreations
      @HelixCreations 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a small pump that pushes water through the PVC which helps lower the freezing point of the water. I've also wrapped the PVC in heating tape to reduce the chances of freezing. Occasionally the nipples will freeze if they drip a little but that only lasts until the sun comes out.

    • @HelixCreations
      @HelixCreations 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strictly necessary, no. For my setup most of the water movement comes from the filter unit. A small pump pushes water through the PVC as well. If sunlight can penetrate your container you'll get algae growth. I haven't once changed the filter but I need to as there is some build up over the last year.
