In the Bones (Powell) vs Spitfire field I’ve skated 101, 99 and 93A Spitfires and 99A STFs, 93A Dragons and the X97s. In my experience the different Bones (Powell) wheels all feel softer than their Spitfire counterparts. Not to say they are worse though. All the wheels feel great for what they do but I have a Spitfire preference in so far as if the surface is suited to the wheel I like the feel and capabilities of the Spitfires more. But the Bones (Powell) wheels are all more forgiving in terms of the tolerance for worse surfaces than their Spitfire counterparts. If you know what you’re skating I prefer Spitfires but if you want something that can handle a bit of a wider range of surfaces I’d go with the Bones (Powell) wheels. I got to say that the best all round wheel is probably the Dragons. Though again I’d rather choose to ride the Spitfire 93s and not skate a surface that requires the Dragons to feel good. Yet to try the X99s but if they are a tad softer than the Spitfires they might very well be a great wheel. It doesn’t take a that much of a crusty surface to make the Spitfire 99s feel too hard but when you’re on something that they can handle they feel so good and slide so easily. I’d say currently for the spots I skate and skate to the X97s or Spitfire 93s are my go to wheels. It’s great to have so many different good wheels to choose from!
@@RikRiorik yup I agree!! Spitfires are the best for smooth skatepark/ smooth street spots imo. But I skate a good amount of street that’s not so smooth and these x99 are so versatile that it’s hard to take them off atm!

Something like that

This is an interesting one for me.. Ty so much for the review man... i really appreciate the time and the edit I have just gone from the nano cubics 97a in 60mm to 99a spitfires in 99a but this time in 56mm. I predominantly only skate bowls and 1/4s etc.. im 47 years old and 6 months in after 34 years off! I only have skated these FF 56mm for about 2 hours.. but the 99a ( and im not sure if its just the Spitfire urethane ) just feels super hard and i wanna say slower than the 97s. I know that i have dropped 4mm in size and its going to feel slower. I thought the hardness might account for the drop in speed i was going to get. Im thinking that these might have actually been the wheel that i was looking for... i like smooth, and i am not really down with the harsh sound ( but i get why some love it) and at 47 im only doing coping tricks that my body is going to allow me. The reason for the 99s were that i wanted to start sliding boardslides on the coping and didnt want the stick. Are these noticeably smoother and quieter than FF 99a ? Im also down with keeping my joints in check re the impact absorption but you have already ticked that box! Will i prefer these more if i like the 97 feel and sound? You got a new sub from me.. Love from Australia Benny
@@bennyg949 hey man I appreciate the comment! So these are definitely smoother and quieter than a 99a spitfire. I have ridden the 97 spitfire as well and can personally say that the bones x99 are a bit smoother and quieter than those as well but I’d say they slide better than a 97 spitfire. So if you want to skate a smaller wheel like you’re skating right now I’d say give these a try in a 55mm or 56mm and you’ll most likely have the speed of the 60mm wheels you had. Hope this helps!
@@Skates123456789 legemd man. Thx so much. Just ordered the servold v6 widecut in 56mm. Im excited to roll em. Stay well.
@@Skates123456789 i can 100% say that bones are quieter and a little softer feel. They are exactly what i was after. The ff although a great wheel, were just not my cup of tea. I could feel everything with those under my feet. And with that they almost felt slower? Excited to ride these Bones x99 now till they cant roll no more. These are nice and feel fast.
@@bennyg949 I thought you would like them from what you were telling me!! Glad you like them 👍
@@Skates123456789 rolled them this morning at the park and on a skatelite mini ramp…. Super fast. Great grip. Release and slide when you want them to. They bark like the spits. Nice and fast on the mini and bowl. Lock in great. Release great. Roll over coping easy. Pop is good. Landings are super absorbent but not bouncy. Something in that x formula. I think my wheel madness is finally over. Thx again bud for all the help.
hey man I have x97 and just bough STF 99a and the STF feels plasticky to me after riding x97 for 3 months, hows the X99 compared to STF99?
@@Ruperth316 I think I only skated one pair of stf99 a while back ago, but the x99 are definitely more smooth and better for crust!
Check out the 54 mm radial fulls they are wide with a classic cut
Thanks for the comparison with the Spitfire F4 99. It's been a long time since I used F4. I'm offset to the soft side compared to you. I just bought some X99 for bowls. I have a street setup with X97, they're okay for me but I'll replace them with the new Spitfire 97s when worn. And I quickly replaced my Powell Dragon 93A because I didn't like the feel on grinds.
@@jaimeronan yeah dragons squeal on grinds!!
The Spitfire soft slides aren't great.
@@vorpalblades Spitfire 93s or new 97s?
@@jaimeronan 93A. I wasn't aware they came out with 97A Soft Slides. I thought they were regular Formula Four urethane.
What's your current setup? Thanks for the review.
@@christiandavis4187 8.25 hue board, 5.8 venture hollows, 54mm x99, mob grip :)
What do you like about the X formulas over SF FF?
@@mutatedgenome they are a LOT smoother than a FF. Makes them exceptional for street but not my preference for park. I think the feel of a FF to me feels better at parks
Already know I’m watching this when it drop
Love youuuu

Yes in the 80’s and 90’s Airwalk was a legit skate shoe company. They were king actually. Then Etnies bumped them off the throne.

About 12 years!
@@Skates123456789 wow! sick skating by the way, very interesting video too
@@theoldpea1 appreciate it! Working on another video rn 👍
i like a bit wider wheel with a rounded edge. i've never owned a set of spitfires, the classics always seemed too narrow for my liking, especially under 56mm. if you have wider wheels you might want to try trucks narrower than board if you still want to have it flip easy.
@@diplenski agreed! You should try spitfire. They’re pretty good!
@@Skates123456789 i'm not opposed, and i've ridden friends' boards that had them and they seemed fine. probably would prefer the 97a if they still make them

@@erich1070 sounds fun!!!
@@Skates123456789 once you pick it up, you don't want to put it down
I've gone through some wheel madness too. I learned that I like thin wheels if my board and trucks are the same width (8.0 for example.) Wide wheels are nice if you want to ride a deck slightly wider than your trucks. For example I can ride 8.125 or even 8.25 with trucks sized 8.0 and a wider wheel.
Yup I’ve learned this as well!
What s stupid question go away
Sorry bruh but, Ben Degros did this theory with proven facts many months ago 🤘🏾🇨🇦
Love Ben! Just my experience! 👍
you want light bro. lighter trucks small wheels. small wheels kill your speed though ,diameter wise those lock ins are fat fckrs
I just cured my madness and I think the 52mm conical fulls might be the perfect wheel for me for tech and to roll through crust
I’ve only skated the 53 and 54 conical full. Wonder if 52 would be good for tech
i want to get better at tech skating too but i just ordered some lock in fulls 💀 don’t know until i try them i guess
Aw man good luck haha. It might be harder to flip in to your grinds, but if you can manage to lock in, the wheels really do lock in good 👍
53mm classic shape is the best
It’s definitely up there!
