Herd Quitter™ Minute - Winter Cover
Cows love to find cover for bedding down in the winter. A windbreak or grove of trees is helpful, but the best cover you can give them is a fluffy hair coat and a thick layer of fat (comes standard on PCC™ models.)

Herd Quitter™ Minute - Sentimental Gifts

I grew up with a toy tractor in one hand and the fender grip of a JD 4020 in the other. I have since restored one, lost it, and was looking to replace it. My wife is understanding of my sentimentalism, so she said, "Happy Birthday . . . and Merry Christmas."

This past week we spent the Thanksgiving holiday with our son in Nebraska. He and his wife custom graze cows and train ranch horses on a ranch near Kimball. Even though this was a working vacation, it made me thankful for the heritage of hard work, freedom and faith that has been passed down from our forefathers.

This past week was a busy one for the PCC™ Crew, with bull sales in Colorado and Alabama. I stopped off in Denver at the Regenerate Conference to talk to folks about grass-based, low-maintenance PCC genetics. Even with the uncertainty of a bitter presidential election, I met a lot of hard working, positive people.

The 4020 is a great tractor. Ahead of its time when it was new.
Those good lookin mama cows there are the trademark of PCC genetics.
Those are good lookin' mama cows Robert. Be blessed.
Thanks, David. God and Kit Pharo get the glory for that! We are blessed
Hi Luke, can I get your number please? Thanks I'm a rancher in se sask. Thanks Brooke
Good story, I'm glad you're doing better. Now a days those 4020 restored bring more than they sold for new. Great old tractor.
I always look forward to this every week!! God bless from Zambia
Great memories, Thanks for sharing! The car looked like a '72 Chevelle Malibu, always my dream car. - Is your new purchase a 4010 or a '20?? Power shift was nice but did take a couple of horses away. Keep us posted, God Bless! S. Carolina
It's a 69 4020 according to the Serial Number, although one of the side panels is off a 4010. My wife and I inherited a rusted out 69 Malibu to start our marriage. It got sprinkled with rice at our wedding. It rained during our honeymoon and we came back to find rice sprouting in the back seat carpet.
How do you select for fleshing ability in beef cattle? What traits do you need to look for?
Fleshing ability is simply the animal's ability put on and maintain good body condition, even on lower quality feed. You can see it as compare the body condition of individual cows in the same herd. Some visibly gain and maintain flesh easier. Others are hard keepers. In addition to tracking Body Condition Scores (BCS) on our cows at calving and weaning, we select for it by choosing PCC herd sires with more back fat measured by ultrasound at evaluation days. Compared with their herd mates, those with thickest back fat will be rated 5* in the sale catalog.
Are you keeping acv out during the winter time.
Yes. I just ran out and will have to get another tote.
Turns out, inflation under Joe has gone down, and our economy is outstanding as of 12/6/24.

Thanks! Greetings from austria 🇦🇹
It was nice to meet you at Regenerate! A very diverse crowd, indeed. I was glad to see Pharo represented there.

When you say wean 50% of her own body weight, what age of the calf are we talking about? 6 months when you have to start taking out the bull calves or more like 9-10 months?
I’ve had Aberdeens that look close to this and at 6 months were more like 400 , and didn’t get to the 600 till about 10 months i can’t tell exactly what breed this is… but 50 % in what time is my question too my angus get to 50% body weight in 7 months
Average age is 6 months -- Calve March-April, Wean first week in October.
@@PharoCattleCompany alright, thank you. I heard the 50% at weaning also from Johann Zietsmann but he also didn’t specify exactly when.

As someone who has 2 sides to my farming business. I sell hay and cattle. When i figure out how much it really costs to feed the cattle i use the figures of what i could have sold the hay for. But also on the cattle side i have also reduced the number of days i feed hay to the main herd from 210 days to 90-120 days now.
In our country, feeding hay all winter is the norm. If you make your cows graze through fluffy, dry snow (no problem for them) some "Karen" will call and demand to know why you are abusing your cows. I told her they were all gathered in the corner of the pasture because that's where the protein tubs are. "Oh . . . I see." I also told her, "Those are the neighbors cows, not mine. I don't feed protein tubs." "Oh . . . I see." I've come to believe that cows are like people: They are truly happier working for a living than being on welfare. Thanks for the comment.
@PharoCattleCompany being in Central Alberta where i live its not possible to completely get away from feeding hay. As some years we have no snow and next year we have 3 feet of snow sitting on top of 6 inches of ice. But we can greatly reduce the hay needed and therefore reduce costs. Iam working on reducing my 90-120 days of hay feeding to 60 days or under.
Whoever ended up with Riptide won the lottery! 👍
Excellent work friend best wishes super video best of luck nice sharing
Beautiful calves!
Fine lookin' calves for sure! Be blessed.
They do look good Kit!
When are they going to publish the results of the tenet genetic test
Interesting.
Ultrasound
Question, what tool /device is being used for pregnancy check?
Our vet injured her shoulder and started using ultrasound. It is physically easier than palpation. We had to dry lot the cows overnight to reduce the amount of manure they're trying to see through.
When I scrolled through my feed and seen the pic for this video all I could think of was J.R. Ewing from Dallas!
Weston is not an oil man like J.R. but you can see he's an auctioneer. He's also an ag teacher and real estate appraiser.
What was the song on the other video of you loading cattle?
Days Like These
Got some feet issues there I see, long toes, is that common on your cattle?
No but it is common on irrigated pasture. The combination of rich grass and excess moisture make it challenging.
✌
How much will those calves weigh at weaning?
Are you still feeding acv ,any other changes or improvements.
Yes on the ACV. They don't consume much on green grass, but we believe it's helpful to prevent bloat when they encounter alfalfa. Other than that, just salt and mineral.
Great explanation
✌
Thanks for the insight
Thank you for this video. Right now the horror movies are running through my head like crazy because we are so dry. They started knocking down my poly wire fences and the only thing holding them right now is the galvanized wire fences around the perimeter of the section. I have borrowed a 36 joule charger from a friend of mine, and my little "7 light" fence tester shows very little voltage is hitting the cows. I have plenty of forage, although it is dormant because it is so dry. Normally we get at least one good thunderstorm in August and September. Nothing in sight. My Plan A and B drought plans have fallen through. So my horror film maker is designing a movie that says I will go down in flames, lose my cattle, lose my home, lose the shirt off of my back! LOL Your video was very good for me today!
Thanks, David. Sorry to hear about the continued drought. I'll pray that the cows will stay in and you won't lose anything!
Boy your horror movies that run in your head are the same ones I get!
✌
Lighting strike is a valid fear. I had a neighbour loose 30 head to lightning. 26 years to the day later another neighbour lost 28 head to lightning.
That is scary! Even though we have a good bit of lightning this time of year, we have been blessed over the years to avoid it.
I just love the herd quitter minute!!
Hi, I really enjoy your videos. If putting the female offspring back into the breeding herd how often would you change bulls?
I was able to use Riptide until he was 7 by separating his daughters to a separate pasture at breeding time. I probably buy a new bull every two to three years, depending on how many heifers I keep.
What would be the average weight of your cow's
1200 lbs. Since we switched from 1600 pound hay burners, it has changed everything: higher stocking rate, feeding less hay, calving ease, better quality grass fed carcasses ...
If less hay piques your interest, read Jim Gerrish's book, "Kick The Hay Habit."
