“Then Came the Morning” — Meditative Antarctica Music
Then Came the Morning, After "The Ice King" Composed by Captain Gerald S. Doorly in the Antarctic 1902-1904
Accompanying Text:
Look at the ice.
“The sharpness of the contrasts.”
“The tranquility of the water.”
“Rapturous wonder.”
“The rare thrill of unreality.”
“Radiant turrets.”
“Honeycombed masses.”
Look at the ice.
“The sharpness of the contrasts.”
These are the words of those who first laid eyes upon this continent. A place left untouched for eons of time. She remains silent and still as they begin to explore her every feature. She continues on her course as they seek to discover every part of her that remains unseen.
Look at the ship, the RRS Discovery. Such a name! Full of intentions and motivations. It’s a ship that launched some of the grandest careers in Antarctica: Scott, Shackleton, Mawson, and Wild. But the Discovery is stuck in the beautiful and unrelenting ice. And so they sit and wait, and listen.
Look at the Morning. This is the name of our ship. We tear through the ice, courageous and victorious. We sing on the Morning, with a piano it could not contain.
We overcame that, too. We dissected that piano with a meat saw and carried it below deck. Then we pieced it back together. We made music with that pitiful thing. She was a worthy companion for long and lonely times.
Listen to our music on the Morning. We are coming for the Discovery. Listen to our rescue song: “The Ice King”:
Bearing the flag of England
Far oe’r the frozen sea…
Doing their duty - not counting the cost,
Till the ‘Morning’ comes with the Spring.
Far away in that cold white land,
In the home of the Great Ice King! . . .
God will keep them from harm and scathe
Till the ‘Morning’ comes with the Spring
The Morning did rescue the Discovery. The Morning did what it was meant to do. But today, I hear that song with new ears. I think of the ice. And I stop. And consider. Listen to the Ice King:
Doing their duty-not counting the cost,
Till the Morning comes with the Spring.
Doing their duty-not counting the cost,
In the home of the Great Ice King.
Duty. Cost. Must they be at odds?
Look at the ice.
“The sharpness of the contrasts.”
Look to OUR Morning.
This is the name of our ship.
In the early 1900's, Captain Gerald S. Doorly expeditions to set sail on Antarctic waters. When they departed for their journey, the crew brought aboard a piano to help pass time during the long journey. They had to saw the legs off of the instrument to fit it on board! Captain Gerald S. Doorly composed a set of 6 songs while aboard, one of which was entitled "The Ice King."
This premiere recording includes an interview with composer Nathan Thatcher about the inspirations for this meditative solo piano piece, including the composition's environmental messages. Richard Sidey's videography of Antarctica makes an incredible backdrop to the piece. To see more of his works, you can go to th-cam.com/users/RichardSidey\

Un bal en rêve, Op. 26 by Teresa Carreño

Un bal en rêve, Op. 26 by Teresa Carreño This beautiful solo piano piece translates in English to “a ball in dreams.” Though it draws from European compositional approaches, it also uses the Venezuelan merengue, a popular dance from Carreño’s Venezuelan roots. It alternates between sections labeled “the sleep,” which are slow and lyrical and “the dream,” during which the merengue is featured. P...

Great piece, nicely played. Thanks for posting.
Incredible playing, and sparing on the sustain and sostenuto pedals!
A great Concerto played Beautifully. What a great recording sound. So Lush ! You know Melody never goes out of style. You did a Bang-Bang Job ! Thanks so much for bringing the music to the Light of Day ! What a pleasure to hear.
Like Gottschalk playing "Happy Birthday". LOL Wonderful performance!
Well, of course, Carreño was taught by Gottschalk, who was (almost) taught by Chopin. (Chopin heard him play and dubbed him "the king of pianists".)
I came here from reading Leah Broad’s Quartet: how four women changed the musical world. Dame Ethyl Smith, Rebecca Clarke, Dorothy Howell, and Doreen Carwithen. This ravishing piano concerto performed exquisitely by Alyssa Freeman with a beautiful violin duet in the middle movement is a real gem!
Thank you so much for your comment and compliments! It was an honor to perform this work, and I sincerely hope that it will be performed more in the near future! Thank you for mentioning that publication too - I remember hearing about Leah Broad's book being in the works but never heard about the release. I'll be ordering a copy and hope others see your comment and do the same!
Wow Alissa!!!! ❤❤❤ amazing !!! Amazing performance!!!!!!
Thanks George you’re the best! ❤❤
Outstanding composition and performing! I enjoyed every minute of this piece. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Ms. Freeman is a powerful soloist.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate that so much! ❤
I recently read an interview with Clare Hammond in International Piano magazine in which she said that this work 'should be heard in concert more often', so I've just listened to your magnificent performance of it; and indeed, Clare is right, though I would say '... heard more often' tout court. Is it the finest English piano concerto? I've not heard a finer one. Thank you (and everyone else involved in this performance) so much for bringing it to our attention with such passion. (Ironic that you 'had to' record it in America!?)
Clare Hammond is doing such incredible and important work! I hadn’t seen the interview, but I’m so glad it helped you find this work. I quite agree, I would call it the greatest English piano concerto and having played several other standard concertos, this one is still my favorite! One day, perhaps I’ll be able to play it in England! Thank you very much for your kind words!
Well done! Thank you!
Bravo!
Why the mask?
Splendid performance... shame about the mask.
Love your wonderful playing.❤ It seems to me that more and more DMAs are teaching in private settings (instead of working in academic/research institutes). My daughter's teacher has a DMA from Eastman. Parents need to get their kids pick up an instrument (preferably piano, of course), instead of them hanging around all day with their phones and game consoles....
Nice!
A gift from God
Thank you, Alissa. And amazing that you played so incredibly well wearing a mask.
Very unique sound here glad I found your channel lol
Aw, thank you so much!!!
Wow! Amazing performance! Never heard this piece but made my ears prop up ! Wonderful work
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate that ☺️
Wonderful performance, Alissa (and string orchestra)! I was not familiar with this composer or this concerto. Really enjoyed it! Thank you very much for sharing! ☮❤
Thank you for listening and I’m so thrilled that you enjoyed it!
Beautifully executed.
Sublime work and performance!
Thank you so much!!

I absolutely love this. It's mesmerizing! I keep listening over and over. Any chance you're going to be putting up a recording on iTunes??
Thank you so much Jenny, that's really kind! I certainly might--and will let you know if I do. If you're interested in playing yourself, I'd be happy to link the music!
I’d love the link! This is such a great piece.

What an amazing, profoundly moving work! Thank you so very much!!!
Isn’t it a magnificent piece? Thank you so much for listening! ☺️
Absolutely wonderful! : D
Thank you so much Severus!
Maybe tutorial on it please ?
I just recently discovered Lili Boulanger and am searching for all of her compositions. From what I've heard so far, much of her work is morose, but this one is quite lively. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your comment! Yes, she really covers a range of styles--much of her music is religious and quite serious. Pie Jesu I find particularly haunting! In another mood, her Nocturne for Violin and Piano is absolutely sublime.
👏👏👏👏👏
Brava !!! Beautiful... I love (what I call) the clarity of your performances. Outstanding
Holaaa, la historia al inicio está genial! Y tocas muy bien 😄 Tienes Instagram?

One day, I will play this! Your performance has given me so much motivation, your rendition is so beautiful 🤩 😌
