Nice. Didn't feel the need to replace the 'death cap' and swap to a 3-prong power cable? I just came into possession of one of these (same deal--needs a fuse cap and new capacitors) & I can't seem to find the big 22uf 450v caps like the ones you used. will the smaller ones work the same?

It's got the twang thang, don't it? I hear country, surf, spaghetti westerns, jangly Brit pop, certain Tom Petty Mike Campbell stuff, anything at the bright end of the spectrum. You can nail all kinds of stuff to the wall with that one. Probably not the first choice for punk or death metal, but a very useful tool to have in the box. I'd love to hear it with a Gretsch.

I aint yer mom but I proud of ya too😀turning the caps to readable is a high end move. Gator clip heat sink also a nice touch

Hi Jacob, I'm currently working on a '63 Epiphone EA-50T. It is the same amp/circuit but a different layout. Coincidentally I changed all the same components as you did. I even put a .01uf as the first coupling cap but in the epiphone one the second coup!ing cap is a .005 (which I also changed to .01) instead of the 250pf in your's. But I have a squeal when the volume up high. I figure its either V1 is microphonic or I'm getting a oscillation. Also the epiphone has the filament wires right along side of some signal wires. I getting a 60hz hum. I'm going to try an artificial center tap on the filaments and see what does for the hum. You know I bought some 6AQ5's on eBay for $5 a piece. Black plate RCAs. What a wonderful power tube! Cheap and same spec as a 6v6. I have no idea why amp builders don't use them. Anyway I must wanted to give you some props, you did a good job on that amp. Happy trails.

6AQ5 have the same basic *characteristics* as 6V6 but lower power output, lower voltage handling and lower plate-wattage dissipation, so not really "the same" as 6V6. I agree that it would be nice to see more modern manufacturers using them in their amplifiers but I'm not even sure to what extent 6AQ5 are being currently manufactured in Russia or China, and although they're fairly easily available as new-old-stock tubes, most manufacturers only want to use tubes and parts that are currently manufactured and easily available in large quantities. It would also require them to buy and keep on hand a stock of 7 pin tube sockets which generally they wouldn't use for anything else because it wouldn't fit EL84's or 12AX7's. By the way, the military-industrial version of the 6AQ5 is a 6005, Which can generally be expected to be a little tougher and perhaps more on spec than ordinary consumer grade versions; and if you get the 6005W version, the W stands for "ruggedized".

PS, Although fresh capacitors, and improving grounding and layout are usually the 1st things to do when you're looking to reduce background hum, another trick you might want to try is "biasing up" the heater supply; taking the voltage off the top end of the cathode resistor on the output tube(s) and feed that into the artificial center tap of the heater winding.

Nice work! Based on your mod here, I’m going to try replacing the .0005 coupling cap in my epiphone EA35-T with a .01 and see if that tames some of the shrill high end. Maybe I’ll need to experiment with values, like you did, or maybe I’ll get lucky. :-) and no, that’s not a typo - you said yours was .005... mine is .0005 between V1b and V2a...!!!

Good luck with your experimentation. Please report back on your findings, or even better, make a video!
