    Thank you so much for clarifying the modern philosophy behind judging, and I’ve understood it more. It seems that a lot of work has been done to make judging as professional as it is. However it seems that the AP division is about performance and entertainment, so what matters most is what attracts the general audience. Nuanced and creative tricks are not so much valued, and although players like to think of such tricks, the place for them seems to only be social media. I agree that not everyone has to like the judging system, but there’s definitely a subset of yoyoing that is underrepresented.

    I have a question, not sure if this is covered in the vid or not, but let's say at the beginning of my freestyle I did a basic Sub mount to kamikaze to 1.5 to double or nothing rail combo element, If I did that exact same thing except I turnt it horizontal, would it be considered a repeated element?

    • @justindaueryoyos
      @justindaueryoyos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@griffinwagner8496 assuming what you said is a score able element, (it may differ on who you ask), the judge may give reduced value, whether it be just 1 less or 0. In my opinion, I would still give it 1, but if they start doing many rail or “godspeed” elements both normally then horizontal, I will start to not click it. It’s also worth mentioning that not every +1 becomes a +2 when done horizontally.

    extremely well-made!! should serve as a great introduction to anyone interested in judging. what a great service to the yo-yo community. I have some thoughts! (I don't want to put words into your mouth, everything I say along the lines of ``I like how you said..." should be interpreted as ``I liked when you said something that made me think of this thing...") What I like: (*) I love how you emphasized the subjective aspects of judging, also talking about how the judging system is supposed to be designed in such a way that promotes the values of the yo-yo community, as opposed to the pseudo-platonic ideal of somehow measuring ``objective skill", which I think is a common misconception about what competitive judging is supposed to accomplish. (well, it is one of the things we ~try~ to accomplish, but it can only be accomplished to a certain degree, which you touch on in the video, see next bulletpoint.) (**) I like how you discussed the relativistic way that yo-yo tricks are judged. E.G., how much harder is a 6.0 hook than a 5.0 hook, etc., and should we care. This fits in very well with the discussion of how some tricks are just ``objectively hard", while also showcasing the shortcomings of trying to objectively judge the difficulty of yo-yo tricks (after a certain point). (***) Your discussion highlights a possible shortcoming of judging when you talk about ``half clicks", which also comes up when you talk about the bonus of transitioning from one trick to another. of course, ``half clicks" could be properly implemented by just clicking MORE, e.g., instead of giving ``bare minimally difficult tricks" one click, we give them 2 clicks, reserving single clicks for those ``half click" scenarios, but alas, this might be too finicky of a way of judging to properly work. and this doesn't even address the issue of negative clicks: (****) the issue of negative clicks! I think they should be abolished, and missing a trick should simply be evaluated as an EVAL. because a missed trick is pretty unambiguous, and always gets NEGATIVE ONE, but certain judges will judge on a different SCALE (as you beautifully explained), you showed also that negative clicks are not all created equal! abolish them. judging is inherently subjective, people will always click positive clicks on different scales but more or less universally negative click on the same scale, which is at least one argument for the abolishment of negative clicks. there are other arguments for the destruction of negative clicks but this is at least one!! (*****) I like how you mentioned that artistic yo-yoing is valid and encouraged yo-yo players to participate more in AP divisions. I agree! However, I also feel that the AP division is extremely, let's say, gate kept. I think this isn't the correct word, but if I want to do a cool alternative freestyle for a captive audience who is taking me seriously (unlike, let's say, the informal environment of Alternative Freestyles that have taken place in the past), the AP division isn't quite right. the addition of an entirely new division serving the purpose of showcasing new and envelope-pushing tricks and types of performances would be amazing, and should become a mainstay at worlds!! put the weirdos on the main stage!!

    • @justindaueryoyos
      @justindaueryoyos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Awesome comment! You did in fact articulate my points correctly. About the AP part, I was trying to infer that AP would turn into a different thing than it is now and compete side by side with 1A eventually, like averages and singles for solving rubiks cubes for example. About point #3, in theory that is the most effective way to score, but practically it doesn't work because the judge wouldn't be able to physically keep up with the clicker if the player did a seriously difficult trick if they were to keep an accurate scale. Players are also very quickly eliminating those easier tricks so it soon won't be a problem as well. Thanks for the comment bro!
