www.japancraft.co.uk Urushi is the sap of the urushi or lacquer tree that is native to Japan, China, and Korea. The sap of this tree contains a resin that polymerizes and becomes a very hard, durable, plastic-like substance when it is exposed to moisture and air. From that time onward, as Japanese culture developed, so did its use of lacquer and its application to bowls, plates, trays, sake cup...

    Isn't it weird that I suddenly had the notion to go looking for this clip where Sheldon had for some reason hidden a USB flash drive within it. Good job Penny didn't stomp any harder or she might have destroyed the drive as well! 😄

    Real raw lacquer is hard to find in the US for wood finishing. If you can find it it's in small tubes that are very expensive and advertised to people wanting to fix pottery, not use for furniture finishing. This breaks the back of the furniture maker. In US to shellac french polish is available at a reasonable cost for lac buttons direct from India and seems to be more easily sustained as a resource in large enough quantity. But Real raw lacquer finished furniture is very beautiful. Perhaps Superior to french polish, but Ive only ever seen photos.

    Hello. If possible, can you tell me how to remove surface scratches from a laquer piece? When I lived in Japan a friend gave me a lovely tray with some gold embedded in the laquer, but my mom didn't realize how delicate it was, and she washed it with harsh soap and it is now scratched and dull in some areas. I would like to try to repair it. Any advice?

    • @PepsiObsessi
      @PepsiObsessi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they're not too deep you may be able to lightly sand the very surface and apply lacquer on top, keep in mind the lacquer you find in hardware stores is different and you would wanna do more research to avoid harming the piece, but assuming the new lacquer doesn't have a reaction with the old, it should be okay. I would ask somebody who has experience using lacquer finish on woodworking projects for help! Hope you can rescue your piece.

    so, this is basically wood that they paint and cover in resin?

  • @killmimes
    @killmimes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    But how is the lacquer itself made?

    • @gantz4u
      @gantz4u 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They collect the sap from trees then filter it, like shellac, through a cloth to remove any grit. Then add natural pigments or use it raw and add thinner sometimes called lacquer thinner. it's similar to the resin finishes in structure, such as varnish, shellac, except these terms varnish, and lacquer have come to mean completely different things from inferior knock off imitations trying to claim to be them.

    2:02 but there has to be a point when they've so fine tuned their ability to replicate a piece that there can't possibly be anything they can improve on... Not unless their view of perfection is absolute consistency in replication... just like a machine. I mean yes, being damn near close is impressive and what you strive for, but the ever so slight inconsistency adds the human element, but I digress.

      oh ya your skrewed unless you have a few pairs of pliers/tongs and a torch. just evenly heat up the handle till its glowing bout orange to yellow and take 2 pairs of pliers and bend it and then put it in the holes. be sure to let it coo dwn naturaly and dont try to splash water on it or it will crack if its still glowing.
