Monome Norns MLR running through a Hiwatt Custom Tape Echo. Using a contact microphone to create some rhythmic textures. I improvised some guitar chops directly into Norns in advance. A hint of saturation and a wash of Valhalla Room in Ableton Live 10. MLR is "an in-progress re-imagining of the multi-generational live sample cutting platform, now with a heightened focus on audio input." Norns i...

Rounds, loops and tape cassettes. Live improvisation exploring the Marantz CP430. The cassette deck is part of a feedback loop chain where it records and plays back the master track in Ableton its own output. I've placed a Echo device on the track that record the Marantz, with 0% feedback, 100% wet and 2.5 ms delay - just to delay the input from being played back. I control the feedback amount ...

Out of all the videos I've watched on Norns this was the one that made decide to get one , this is what I have been looking for, random abstract dope loops, just Gorgeous textures. Thank you Sir!
Очень хорошо!
wow
this is beautiful! I assume you're loading in a file for channels 1-5 on mlr? Is it the same file that you're just triggering in different places or a few different files? Seems like maybe the latter. And what's the recording of?
love this! With mlr, I often find myself recording short loops in order to have more precise control, but this makes me want to play around with longer recordings and overdubs too. Thanks for that
love the use of mlr automations as a compositional element! I’m going to have to give that a try sometime. Thanks for this
beautiful music what are you using as a pre-amp for the guitar into Norns?
this is the first time I've heard an electric guitar through norns, and it's beautiful! Thanks for this
I was a bit worried something was on fire
Amazing! Would love to see more of this!
pretty damn wonderful
The section around 6 minutes in is gorgeous 0:
lovely twin peaks tattoo ( : and lovely tunes as well!
wow. yes. very nice.
Sounds like random garbage..
inspirational!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sounds magical 💙
This is absolutely amazing, really nice work dude!
love this
I like the visuals. Sounds amazing. The norns is an interesting device.
inspirational
Dude where did you get the monome grid
This is one of the best norns videos. It has a musicality that is sometimes lacking in other videos.
Funfishsweater Channel Thanks. That's most kind. Be sure to check out Den Derks stuff. Really beautiful stuff. And he writes some really good scripts.
Lovely tones, man! Very inspiring!
I really like your sounds and love Jazzmaster! Thank you for sharing.
just beautiful. I'm learning how to use monome grid and norns.
So beautiful.
This is great. Awesome work.
Dominic Lanser hey, thanks! : - )
It's beautiful in its minimalism.
Daniel Lanois's spirit, isn't it?
mathieu morel 👻👻👻
Super.
These kind of sound experiments set a very nice mood when writting code.
Brandon Hernández wow, that’s cool. What are you coding?
Just playing with a line drawing class in Java: you input some numbers, which will affect the way an underlying cycle behaves, and get some unexpected patterns. It would be nice to hear more stuff from you!
Brandon Hernández sounds cool. I’ve been looking for some kind of software that could generate visual patterns and shapes based on audio input. Do you know of any? Never got into coding myself, or never found the time and motivation to get the basics. I have some sounds on a SoundCloud page as well, under the same alias. Hope I can wrap up something more full lenghty to release this year.
Oh man this is awesome! Nice slow build up.
Tyrone Shoelacez Thanks a bunch : - )
Nice feel to the whole track, love the tone!
Wirelesswine thank you! Glad you like it!
awesome, just got my Norns in the mail yesterday.
Tyrone Shoelacez congratulations! Paired with a Grid? Thanks for listening : - )
Yeah man! I’ve been playing with it all day. Next level stuff...
Tyrone Shoelacez Nice! Agreed. So inspiring. Love your OP-Z stuff. Seems like a fun box.
Plym it is. I can’t wait to record it into MLR though. That tape thing you have is sick!
Tyrone Shoelacez Yeah, that must be a super cool duo. I’ll be sure to check it out when you upload a taste of it. The Hiwatt is very cool. Instant mojo. I see you have a tape recorder in some of your videos - that seems like fun. Been playing around a bit with some cassette recorders.
Just got hold of Norns and your content has given me a lot of inspiration. And I’m your 200th sub, congrats!
Thanks for listening and for reaching out! Really cool to hear : - ) I'll keep an eye out for some Norns stuff from you!
hehe - there's a 3rd row of eurorack waiting to be filled in...what are you planning to get? :)
Haha, yeah. I actually sold a bunch of modules recently to finance a Prophet-6. Still got the essentials, and will probably build my way back up to a full 6U or eventually 9U. We'll see : - )
@@plym5343 Hehe. Up to 9U is the way! I got a DS1 Curtis Filter to quench my Prophet thirst for now. It's not a bad filter actually. I'm curious about Three Sisters though...have you used that one?
@@piotr803 Nice! I'm sure it's a great filter. I'm falling in love with my Prophet now. Really missed having a keyboard based synthesizer. Never tried Three Sisters, but it's definitely on my wish list. Very cool features. And also great as a sound source. Check out Dan Derks "Less Concepts". I know he uses Three Sisters as oscillators a lot. Great record!
@@plym5343 Yeah, it's nice to have a keyboard-based synth as well. I'm still holding onto my MS20 for that same reason (and that filter of course!). Thanks for the recommendation. Will definitely have a listen!
@@plym5343 P.S. I like how standalone synths are well tuned instruments. All gainstaging perfected. Mmm.
Beautiful track :) very Terry Reiley, polyrhythmic, and that's always rad!
Beautiful with all the variations and surprises!
sometimes sounds like a mellotron flute!
Yann Guillermou Mellotron flutes ❤️
Vakkert!
Lovely, really... I'm envious of the clean-guitar-swell-norns-custom-chord-sampler thing. Tried to do it with a piano today with much less success. :(
Joshua Andrew Thanks J! I would love to hear your take with the piano stuff. I’ve been using re:mix a lot with piano recordings, but then with much more preparations than this. I really love your Norns + tape videos. Very inspiring!
I have no idea what's going on, but it sounds really beautiful!
State Azure Thank you 🌞🎞
Magic.
Love this. Just got a Norns and I am an owner of infinite jets which you used brilliantly in this piece. Cheers!
Wirelesswine Thanks! : - ) Both wonderful little machines! I sold my Infinite Jets to finance some other gear, but I so miss it from time to time. Would love to hear some Norns+IJ from you.
Plym will do. Hopefully it turns out as well as your work ;)
@@plym5343 Is this in glitch mode? Absolutely beatiful work.
Dominic Lanser Thank you. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I used the glitch mode for this. That was what I mostly used when I had the pedal. Really cool stuff.
Beautiful, great use of Norns chopping up the guitar samples!
State Azure Thanks!
what sampler in norns are you using?
Brock Cooper MLR ⚡️
Really nice! The ambience provided by the sampled guitar is absolutely stellar!
Spencer Terry Thanks, glad you liked it : - )
Been listening to the playlist with ease, very pleasant listen! Subscribed.
Yann Guillermou Thanks! I’m glad you like it. Quality content on your channel aswell.
@@plym5343 thanks!
wait...so you can plug a guitar into norns and use it to manipulate the sound, like an insane effects pedal?
Brock Cooper that’s right : - )
EPIC! Im sold. So many questions lol, Ive seen it used mostly for synth work, but the manipulation of live audio is amazing. I know you can program functionality with Lua, and the sound engine is SuperCollider, but are you running the guitar through a preamp to get the desired tone before you manipulate it? Or can norns dial in a decent tone directly? Can it understand the notes I play? and then harmonize an internal synth? then manipulate the lfo/adsr/ on said synth? lol sorry for unloading on you, but you have no idea how helpful a response would be! cheers dude!
Brock Cooper Brock Cooper In this video I use an SansAmp VT bass preamp-pedal, just to thicken up the tone a bit. But in the global settings page on Norns you can adjust stuff like compression and fx (the reverb in this one is all from Norns itself). Regarding your other questions I can’t say wether it will be possible in the future or not, but for now I don’t think anyone has scripted something like that. The MLR script that I’m running here is more or less a sampler and pattern recorder. You can chop and pitch and record and sample and resample and so on. A super nice tool. Check out llllllll.co for more information on Norns and other Monome stuff : - )
Thanks for the breakdown, Much appreciated! Im inspired & Ill def checkout llllllll.co. Keep putting out the great sounds man! cheers
👏👏👏...so the sound comes just from Fender and Norns? Impressive...layers
Dario Miticocchio Yeah, more or less. I use a Tech 21 SansAmp VT Bass pedal just as a preamp between the Jazzmaster and Norns, to beef up the signal on its way in. Global settings in Norns contain some compression and a very nice reverb, which you can adjust to taste. A very nice little machine! There’s talk of a panning function for each tracks down the line. Thank you for listening! : - )
Love your sound! It’s so organic and engaging. A very fitting video aesthetic as well.
Thank you so much for all the positive feedback! Very much appreciated : - )
