Basic Bangla: Pronoun - Second Person Singular & Plural Numbers
BASIC BANGLA 12: SECOND PERSON SINGULAR AND PLURAL NUMBBERS
In English you have only one word for the second person - YOU. So simple. This 'You' can be used as both singular and plural numbers,
In Bangla there are 6 words that can be used as the second person singular and plural numbers. They are:
1. Tui (Singular) / তুই
Tora (Plural) / তোরা
Use Tui / Tora in a very informal situation. Conditions: Similar age group or a senior speaking to a junior, but always in a familiar situation.
2. Tumi (Singular) / তুমি
Tomra (Plural) / তোমরা
Use Tumi / Tomra in a semi formal/semi informal situation. Conditions: Similar age group, known to each other and friendly situation. An aged person may address a junior as Tumi or in the plural form if theyare more than one person.
3. Apni (Singular) / আপনি
Apnara (Plural) / আপনারা
Use Apni /Apnara in a very formal situation. A junior may address someone as Apni or its plural form in case they are many. Two similar age group people also use Apni when ther are not known or superior in some respects.
