    I have two powered units made by Gifford Wood co of New York One is 1922 and other one 1923. They have a Le Roi four cyl motor and were used in south central Iowa at Ottumwa I have owned them for ten years and they run perfect but in southwest missouri our ice never gets over about two inches thickj there are very few of these units left

    If you plant the castor oil bean plant on your land, it will definitely not come again, do not kill a piece of land, it is a very useful animal for nature. don't kill, miss forever

    Well, first of all, I spent hundreds of dollars on various traps to rid my property of destructive pocket gophers. I felt like Bill Murray in Cadyshack! Then all changed with the DK1. I was o-fer with the other gopher (yes, it rhymes) traps. The DK1 works very well. However, I've seen the issue you are describing and plan to modify my traps. Thanks for the advice.

      I have tried these also, My issue with them is having no handle to stake them down. The only thing that should move on a trap is the trigger

    Do you ever dig out the hole with a shovel to expose both sides of the tunnel where it splits? Or do you always dig out the holes with your burrow buddy as in this video?

  • @billrichardson2256

    Thank you for a really good and informative video and sharing your knowledge with us. How would tethering the DK1 trap to a stout cord or similar and then to the flag stake work?

    • @burrowbuddy3596
      @burrowbuddy3596 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing that should move is the trigger, the trap stake holds the trap secure, preventing the gopher from being spooked, Saw a bunch of nearly new DK1's on eBay with chains attached, I am guessing--Poor catch rate

  • @ron827
    @ron827 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You certainly have made a science out of using this trap and your findings will definitely help others be more successful in their trapping endeavors. It would be interesting to set 100 traps without any modifications and compare the catch rate with modifications. Maybe someone with more gophers than you have will be willing to make this scientific test. It would make a great science or 4-H project for a rural youth. Keep up the good work and it was fun to see how and where you make your videos.

    Sure wish I had known about these tune-up tricks when I was a kid on the farm trapping gophers many years ago.

  • @richiemac2395
    @richiemac2395 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have another issue that you might be able to comment on. If when you place the trap into the burrow and the ground is at such an angle as to cause the jaws to lift slightly. The gopher approaches the trap and because it is lifted, the gopher backs off.Sometimes I will place a dirt claud underneath the handle to level the trap, but is there a way to level it another way?

    • @burrowbuddy8487
      @burrowbuddy8487 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always place the stake at the closed end of the eye ,with the stake leaning back toward yourself, before pushing the stake in, I will lift the eye some, then when letting the trap down to level, the closed end of the eye will kind of rest on the stake, if it slides down the stake, forward, then your set hole is to big. The jaws of the trap should be right out in the dirt

    I agree, the Death Klutch is best and simplest to set gopher trap there is. I did not know about your tuneup tip, thanks and just in time for trapping season. May all your traps contain a catch every morning.

  • @richiemac2395
    @richiemac2395 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that the stakes that I'm using are too small in diameter. Is there anything that I can do to use as a filler to stop trap movement so that the gopher wont be spooked? Also do you ever cover the hole with something or just leave it open?

    • @burrowbuddy8487
      @burrowbuddy8487 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not cover or bait, the open burrow is the bait, the natural instinct of the gopher is to fill up the opening, he will get caught when pushing dirt to fill the opening. With a tight fitting set hole, the trap jaws will be in the dirt at sides, and will hold the trap firm, It is important , nothing should move but the trigger, place stake firm against V end of eye
