Ok so i am a experienced fisher for salf and fresh the place you have your sinker and hook need to swap and have a running sinker. Then the bait will moove a lot more and look realistic and it's easier to tell when you get bites

Idk if your rod has this but at the bottom of the front of the reel there is a switch if you flick it it is basically like loosening the drag but when you reel it automatically tightens the drag to what it already was

Let it take drag don’t thumb ur spoil you’ll break off every time if you do that

i like to wrap my line on the bait to secure it. Frozen fish are slippery baits, meaning they split out of your hooks!

Maybe while waiting to get bit cast a size 1 Candybar 🌪️ Spoon 🥄 🍻… Sometimes it’s better to leave the bail open, let em eat, circle hooks in theory will hook em as soon as you close the bail

if you cut the bait on an angle, there is more area for the juices to come out of, making a bigger trail of scent.

I would let them eat it for a bit longer on low drag and then tighten it just so they can get that circle hook into them. I doubt they’ll get gut hooked or even hooked bad with that big of a bait and a circle and if you just let them eat longer, it gets them to engulf the entire thing instead of just pick it up.

I think youre in SoCal. Looks familiar cause I grew up down there and fished from Long Beach to San Clemente regularly as a kid. Some of the biggest rays I ever caught were from the San Gabriel River inlet. There's a power plant right up the river that makes the water nice and warm, right next to the Alamitos Bay inlet. If you have a boat too, Cat Harbor on Catalina Island has some monster Leopard Sharks and Halibut.
