Telefunken TP1005 TeD player actually working well? Channel update and sneak peek!
Where have I been and what have I been up to? Well, I haven’t disappeared, I’ve just had my life on hold.
I made the mistake of not buying a house when I was younger, and that decision came back to bite me in a big way.
I’ve pretty much spent most of the last four years in housing limbo. Not long after I posted my last real video, my lease ran out, and I had to pack up and move.
I then got another rental property, got myself all set up, released the new logo video, was all ready to start shooting videos again, aaaaand the owners of the house sold it and I had 30 days to move out.
Then COVID-19 hit, and Australia plunged headfirst into a housing crisis, and I’ve not been able to set up a studio or a proper workshop anywhere that I’ve been since.
However, there is good news… Not only have I spent all this time acquiring new gear to showcase and repair, having filled an entire storage unit in the process, buuuuuuut (drumroll please) I’m about 6 months off moving into my new house that is currently under construction.
A house designed from scratch with a dedicated electronics workshop and studio space, no less.
This video is a little sneak peek of just one of the things I’ve been working on in the meantime… A 1975 Telefunken TP1005 TeD videodisc player, now working nearly perfectly.
Big things are happening, and I’ll be back with a vengeance… Stay tuned! 🤩

Vintage Tech: 1960s Pocket Reel-to-Reel Cartridge Recorder - The Grundig EN3 Luxus Dictation Machine
มุมมอง 3.9K6 ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I take a look at a neat portable reel-to-reel tape recorder from 1965. It's called the EN3 (EN being short for Elektronische Notizbuch, or Electronic Notebook), and it's made by the German firm Grundig. The design is pretty neat, it's small enough to fit in a (fairly roomy) pocket, and while it's primary market would have been businessmen and the like, it's also compact enough to ...
Tech History: Early Compact Disc Players - Retrospective Look at the Sony CDP-11S and Philips CD202
มุมมอง 12K6 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is a retrospective look at two early compact disc players - The Sony CDP-11S, and the Philips CD202. Say goodbye to analog, and hello to digital! The Sony is running well as I've already done a bit of electronic work and some preventative maintenance in the past, but it's cosmetically very rough, so I fix up the front panel, touch up some scratches and repaint the lid. Unfortunately ...

    I'm in the US and have a CDP-200. From what I can tell they are the same CDP but Europe got it as the 11S. My tray had issues opening. I recently opened it up and cleaned the old grease off and put on new, and it now works very smoothly. There is an L shaped arm held down by a screw on the tray itself (can be seen in the video) that is close to the power supply, that grease was very hard from age and heat. While I was in there I also added the 2 heat sinks. Thanks,

      Take care of it! Mechanically is indistructible but its Philips capacitors are prone to fail, particulary the ones of power supply and some on cdm and servo pcb. I completely recapped many of CD100, CD200, 202, 300, 303 ecc. Measuring the old ones are WAY out of spec after nearly 40 years. If your machine has original ones soon may start to develop faults like 50hz hum and difficulties to read discs from cold.

    My earliest CD is a Japanese Sony pressing of Wham's Make It Big. Catalog number 32.8P-60. Pressed in 1984 or early 1985. My earliest issued CDs are two Japanese Billy Joel albums and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon from 1983 (52nd Street, 35DP 1, and Glass Houses, 35DP 18, and DSOTM CP35-3017). Although those discs were pressed around 1985. Also with the silver paint on a q-tip, I might try that on my Sony PCM-F1 digital audio processor (NOT a CD player). My F1 has seen better days and might have the same paint as the CDP-11S. Also, my PCM-F1 has the same DAC as your CDP, the CX20017. One thing to note about this DAC is that it processes both the left and right channels, and the effect is a extremely minor delay between both channels. The delay is 1/88200 of a second or 11.33786848072562492 microseconds. However this delay is imperceptible to the human ear and since it only is one chip, the price was a lot cheaper than having two DACs process both channels. As you pointed out, the CD202 you have has two DACs, so there is no delay however they are only 14-bit, and they use oversampling. All early Philips CD players had 14-bit DACs. Sony had true 16-bit DACs.

Got out of a terrible relationship, moved into a place of my own, and in the process lost 57kg (or 125lbs) so I won’t be so ashamed of my appearance on camera. What a wonderful little device. I guess it had the advantage over contemporary cassette recorders in terms of size, you could have fit one of these into a large coat pocket or small bag, perfect for a reporter on the go or for recording memos wherever you wanted (a predecessor to Dale Cooper's dictaphone from Twin Peaks, I suppose).

    Buying a long-ass ad on Techmoan, the size of this video (and maybe even longer than his), even if it doesn't fool anyone (or especially because it doesn't), is a bit of a dickish move… Your content looks cool, and all, but the strategy itself feels… wrong, dude, and it really prevents me from fully enjoying it. You're aping his style and, to top it off, also buying ads to be displayed… in his own channel?! And even if it was TH-cam's algorithm which did the deed… Nah. Not getting my sub. You're lucky I didn't dislike your video for good measure; I guess I'm feeling nice today.

    • @Retronics
      @Retronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm terribly sorry, João, it wasn't my intention to deceive you. I am a fan of Techmoan but I didn't really consider myself to be aping his style... After all, I'm just starting out, and all I'm doing is filming myself explaining how some old tech stuff works, giving a bit of background on it, and demonstrating how I managed to repair it. Personally, I don't consider my videos to be a patch on the quality of Techmoan's, but he's been making his for years and I uploaded my first one a bit over a week ago. My video ads are targeted at the fairly broad channel category of "technology" because, again, my channel is only eleven days old, and I'm trying to gain subscribers and view time to meet TH-cam's new (rather strict, I might add) requirements for monetisation. My goal is to get enough subscribers to start achieving organic growth, and sustain the costs related to sourcing and filming new things, mostly because I really enjoy exploring and fixing pretty much anything tech-related I can get my hands on. In saying that, I have seen an unexplained spike in views since this morning (which I was rather excited about, I will admit), so I''m guessing AdWords for Video has been playing my ad over one of Techmoan's videos, and that's where it has come from. Honestly, I'd much prefer it to be increased interest in my content, because advertising is not cheap, and I have a family to support. Hopefully you'll understand that I wasn't trying to rip him off, and if that's not enough for you, the video I'm currently producing relates to restoring and modifying a gaming console, which is a topic I can't recall him ever doing. I also have some car-related videos, and some electronic build videos I'm planning as well. Once again, my apologies for misleading you. TGPN.

      Hi João, I have ceased all forms of advertising effective immediately. TGPN.

    • @Mainyehc
      @Mainyehc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, well, no worries! I didn’t say it was a dick move… Only dick-ish. ;) And I didn’t get deceived in any way, shape or form, I just got slightly confused for the better part of five seconds; your ad was clearly marked as such, but it felt a bit like those full-page ads disguised as articles in newspapers, if you catch my drift. Anyway, you did get my point of view (bluntly as I may have put it), it seems. Thanks for the kind response; however right I might’ve been in my criticism, I did overreact, and I’m also sorry for that. I should’ve considered the whole algorithm thing more thoroughly, and… you know, construed a fairer argument. On that matter, maybe cutting off all advertising is also harsh, but I hope I did help you out with my criticism in the end. I would never claim to be the prototypical TH-cam viewer, but surely I’m not the only one who might’ve considered the whole thing to be kind of… weird, or even off-putting. It was almost as if I felt guilty for actually enjoying an “advertisement”. This whole experiment would make for a good case study, now that I think of it. Anyway, I digress. I know this is a dog-eat-dog world, in which advertising can really play an important part (hey, it did get some people to know your channel and you will probably end up getting at least one sub out of it after all… It’s like that old adage, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” ;) ), but it’s also filled with really cool collaborations and good relationships between TH-camrs (to be fair, I‘m not some sort of gossipy “tattletale” and would never claim such a thing on Techmoan’s channel or social media, I kinda got your point from the very beginning and realized you must be a well-meaning fan yourself; imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery), and I’m a firm believer in organic growth. Also, I hope you take this as a sincere compliment: your content does look cool and can probably stand on its own, without the need for much in the way of paid advertising (or are the algorithms so effed up already - and/or Google so greedy - that your videos wouldn’t show up naturally in my feed otherwise? I mean, I do also follow LGR, the 8-bit guy, retrotech, the works…). Not that I’m thinking of starting a TH-cam channel of my own or anything, but I do take great interest in these matters… I studied at a Communication Design & New Media MFA programme, and a few of the issues we approached were precisely remix culture, Creative Commons, self-publishing, etc. (one of my case studies was, of all things, Machinima, and I was already reading on memetics way back in 2010); for me, it’s still rather interesting to see how small content producers relate to one another, to mainstream content-holders and to the distribution chain.

    • @Retronics
      @Retronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's OK. I'm glad for the viewer interaction - I was starting to think I must be seriously boring to watch because I had only managed one comment on this video and two on my other video after several thousand views... You have given me definite food for thought though. I chose to end the ad campaign because when I opened AdWords after reading your comment, I had a brief moment of horror when I realized that my videos could not only be playing over Techmoan's, but also over the other creators who make videos I enjoy and whose channels could be categorized alongside his. I think for now, I'll put a stop to the advertising and focus my energy on producing more content that can actually attract viewers and subscribers. I've also sent him an email apologizing for my mistake and for confusing any viewers wondering why he's suddenly developed an Australian accent. Thanks for the compliment. It is nice to actually get some written feedback instead of just hoping a number beside a thumb icon increases. As for my content standing on it's own, well, a month ago I'd never filmed anything seriously before, let alone edited it into a watchable video, created animated titles, recorded voice overs, designed artwork, etc, etc. To my eyes, there is a definite improvement overall between my first video and this one (it took me about fifty takes to get the intro piece to camera on the last video right due to nerves), and I intend to continue refining my skills and gaining self-confidence as I produce more content. If you add up *everything* I've done from scratch to get to here, I would say over the last six or seven weeks I've probably already invested a couple of hundred hours, while working full-time and having a family, just to produce and release a little over thirty minutes of watchable video. Now I've laid down the groundwork though, it's much easier to create content - I'm only fine tuning the peripheral aspects now (such as the TH-cam channel structure, my website, Patreon, and social media feeds) rather than creating them from the ground up. As for algorithms, I don't think I'd turn up in your feed because my channel is tiny compared with most, and even with carefully written descriptions and keeping to relevant keywords, I'm still not going to garner anywhere near the views or viewer interaction needed to make a serious impact. In the future, who knows though. I came into this half expecting to be ridiculed incessantly, but it seems I'm not doing too badly after all. I don't know if it's the same for you, but I find myself genuinely excited when I see the content creators I watch (all of who you mentioned) collaborate with each other. Hearing Techmoan in that LGR video a week or two back had me grinning at my monitor. Same with when he recorded the tape for The 8-Bit Guy, it was great to see a literal transatlantic crossing of two of my favorite channels. Anyways, thanks for all of this, even though I utterly freaked when I read your first comment, and allow me to thank you personally for subscribing. I really do hope you enjoy my future videos, and I'll endeavor to do the best I can by you and all of my viewers. :)

      The General Purpose Nerd Well, it's really nice to see you have your heart in the right place, and… while I didn't see the rest of your work yet, if this is indeed the result of your early efforts, I'm impressed and positive it will eventually pay off if you keep at it. If you ever need a motivational/inspirational boost (and don't yet know his channel; if you do already, and it's very likely that is the case, please bear with me), Smooth McGroove's latest videos after his prolonged absence will surely do the trick better than I (or a screaming Shia LaBouef, for that matter :P ) ever would. Also, I did study and do some editing back in the day, so if you want I can give you some constructive nitpicking in due time (not right now, though; here in the antipodes it's already 10:30 AM and I still haven't gotten any sleep :/ ). • @Retronics

      I’d look at adding heatsinks to the two ICs, same as I’ve done. They overheat and cause the problem you describe, and my player used to do it before I modded it. More info here: www.tronola.com/Saving_the_Sony_CDP-101_CD_Player.pdf (Luckily, the 11s just needs a rectangular add-on heat sink for the servo IC as it’s not as complicated inside as the 101.)

      @kellysportsinnernorthernst6503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Elyse for such a helpful reply, I really appreciate it as my S11 is in such good cosmetic condition I want to get it going. Final question, who would I take it too to do the work you recommended? A general service person? Thanks in advance

    • @Retronics
      @Retronics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if you're confident with a screwdriver, a grinder, and a drill, it's not a terribly hard DIY job. The servo IC heatsink is just a rectangle of 3mm aluminium screwed to the existing heatsink with some thermal compound in between, and the RAM IC heatsink is just a flat piece of metal with the sides bent up, a smear of thermal compound between it and the IC, and a drop of superglue to hold it in place. If not, then yeah, I'd suggest an electronic repair shop. It's possible they may be able to source heatsinks from an electronics parts specialist that they can retrofit. I'd print a copy of that PDF out and hand it to them so they have some idea of what the end result should be. The most important thing is that both of those chips get some relief from heat, as they are both running on the edge of their design limit for heat, and as these players age and the power supplies drift slightly, they run even hotter and cause the fault we both experience - Not only that, while it's possible to build a replacement for the servo IC from discrete components, there is no replacement for the RAM chip at all... An ounce of prevention is much better than a pound of cure. :)
