From small portions to creative meal ideas, I’ll show you what it was like to eat on such limited ingredients and how I m...

I baked a 1940s National Loaf- did it taste like cardboard?
มุมมอง 28K21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video, I try my hand at baking something that I've talked about enough times- the iconic 1940s National Loaf, a staple during World War II in the UK. This hearty, wholemeal bread was introduced as part of food rationing efforts and became a part of wartime life. However, many people reported that, rather than this being a hearty wartime substitute for typical bread, it kind of tasted li...

Our work hours haven't changed in 84 years!? A brief history of the 'work-life balance'
มุมมอง 12K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
I'm at a pretty pivotal moment in my life right now, I've been working in a job for about 6 years, a job that, when I started, felt like it could be a career. And don't get me wrong, I do love my work and I'm proud of it, it meant that I could pay off my mortgage and I've met the most amazing friends. But rewind to little childhood me, who thought that she'd be an actress gracing the red carpet...

Put the spoon in hot water
Honestly kind of love that this was a little haphazard with the kneading and not having 2 loaf tins. Shows that this recipe is meant to be a little forgiving and makes sense why it was popular during this time. Love it!
I think you've short-changed yourself a bit by using spreadable butter. It has other ingredients added and won't go as far as the equivalent weight of butter. It's a fascinating experiment.
Love your channel. I use Kamut and Einhorn wheat that I grind myself. Whole meal every time. So much better. I will try this loaf too!
love this video !!!! always looking for a new way to wear my vast collection of scarfs. (litrally can not go in to a lush and not dig through the "vintage knot wraps" they are so much fun. i have worn them as neck bow at a queens jubilee event at the black country museum along with my swan print poodle skirt and i love the rosie riveter look. tried them all whilst watching :D and i love the rose headband look and may wear it when i am in the science museum tomorrow
Did it save money?
Headscarves aren't so easy to find but any material can work. My sister cut up an old duvet cover 😮
Feeling hungry for an hour or two isn’t bad really, I think we’re just used to grabbing something quick if we’re hungry. I think being a bit hungry in between meals would make you really enjoy the food better.
My Nana got married during WWII and her friends and family saved up their egg rations for her so she could make a decent wedding cake, bless
I remember when we used a lighter for the gas stove that just had a flint that made sparks. Gas welders still use them. Nowadays I would use one of the long reach candle lighters. That are less than £1 each.
I still have my mother's ration books for ww2. It looks like each person had a ration book. My other was in her late teens during the war. I'm from the US. It looks like the rationing here was similar in many respects. Margarine wasn't much used here at that time, and coffee instead of tea was more popular, so I didn't see any ration tickets for those items in the booklet. Even though my mother lived in the city, her mother kept a victory garden, rabbits and chickens, which I am sure helped feed her six children still at home, three others served in war.
I’ll bet the jam on toast would’ve been foul tasting if you had to eat the national loaf. It was so bad that people called it ‘Hitler’s secret weapon’. I wonder how much weight you lost after eight days of WWII rations?
This was fascinating. Love it, well done 🎉
Oh my god that so funny the minion noise counting the tea bags 🤣
That infact WAS the borrowers I thought of 😂❤
I’m from Windermere
My gran saw her and she said she looked like a witch
I don't think people wold be able to cope nowadays xx
She moved to my home area

I can never understand why people all want to look the same, Have they never heard of individuality? Some people are like sheep following all the latest trends. Oh this year my kitchen is going to be red, red kettle, red toaster etc oh I’m fed up with that I’m chucking it out and going blue. I don’t listen to advertisements.
I was born 1963
I have no difficulty finding wholemeal bread flour (Lidl, Sainsbury, Asda). But I only use about 100g in a 600g dough.
My favorite on you is the Classic Rosette. It emphasizes your beautiful eyes! I'll have to dig out my vintage scarves belonging to my mama and my Aunt Elsie. I previously I did not know how to wear these properly, but now I am equipped to try out different styles. Thank you!
I wonder if people Fasted a lot during those days!!
yey! you read my mind, I was literally googling this last night! Thank you so much xxxx
I did the maths, the jam would actually be just under 2 oz a week, which is just insane (also, if it was me, I would put a spoon of jam on the porridge). You’ve inspired me to try this myself, who knows it might come in handy to practice this, with the way things are going lol
My grandmother lived through the Great Depression and WWII. While rationing wasn't as drastic in the USA, I remember her being so concerned about wasting food and describing food waste as "a sin." BTW, I found out that during the WWII-era Siege of Leningrad, some of the Soviets actually murdered each other for ration cards (!).
I’ve been an antique head since I was little & still managed to be the popular asshole in highschool, old stuff is awesome, the way things where made then, everything was so nice it seemed custom to you but it was factory made. Damn
The national average dress size went up by one, not down during the war time rationing. A very high carb diet causes weight gain not loss. But as people were frequently mostly slimmer back then anyway a mere dress size increase wasn't noticeable. They had British cafes so workers could get a 3 course lunch every day and anyone else could also go in for an off ration hot meal. So, that plus the chip shops and other places selling food meant that you weren't expected to live entirely off the ration food you bought to consume at home. You weren't using your points system items either you would have had either 26 points per person per month or 16 depending on availability of items as these things reduced over the war years due to shortages. But you'd have had baked beans and spam or corned beef from your points. America sent us tons of spam and other items so it was a real boost to the meat ration to get your large tin of spam which was almost 1lb in weight back then. So it made both meals and packed lunches. So I was a bit surprised when you showed your rations but none of the points system items were mentioned. You'd have had treacle and dried fruit in your porridge if you'd used your points for example. And the oats were probably points system items as well. I did it for a month sponsored for charity and I used all my points, the chippy and cafes in town for authenticity and because no one was expected to live just off those rationed coupon items alone. The cafe rule was one meat item only so veg soup, main course with meat or fish and a dessert like Spotted Dick, with custard made from dried milk and custard powder. They also had powdered eggs on the points system one tin a month which was equivalent to about 1 dozen eggs. But many people kept hens. I had 4 hens at that time so I always had plenty of eggs during my month long challenge. There was also dried milk so you cooked with dried and used fresh in tea. Kids and pregnant women got extra fresh milk. Families had it easier as you could get more items and make it all go further and have additional items with all those points. With 2 adults, mum and daughter and the kids coupons and points you're going to have far more stuff to make meals with. A single person had it harder.
Cooking fat would probably have been lard or dripping.
I had to look again, your loaf was smiling at me 6:52
Looks delicious!
My mum used to use the chic look on the back of dad's bike before helmets were mandatory. Loved this practical guide to tying headscarves and would love to see the fashion reignited.
It's a great look even with a helmet :) it helps keep you from getting "helmet hair".
At 23:33, oh no! The Gerries are at it again! Seriously, I think we all eat too much processed, hard to digest food these days. All that food needs to be digested which makes us sluggish. Unfortunately, it probably ends up as fat. Looking at the weight scale causes us distress, so we try to cut back. That makes us crazy hungry, and we overeat again. And so on it goes. I suspect that the calories provided in that ration kept you a little bit hungry all the time and that meant your body was not laboring under too much food. This gave you that feeling of having more energy. Thanks for the vicarious wartime rationed diet fun! I am a vegan. I don't know if there was such a thing back then. I would probably have died of lack of vitamin B12. But I have noticed some weight loss, a healthier, more energetic feeling, and I even think I have better posture. I love carbohydrates and other types of vegetables and fruits. I really don't miss meat & dairy foods at all.
Brambly Hedge. I love the patchwork bedspreads.
fabulous loved it. the last cottage design was my favourite
I was born in 1960. I still use Ponds cold cream to remove makeup. It works great.
I admire you but ewww yuck I couldn’t have margarine 🤢 I do use lard and dripping though. I wouldn’t even touch the Clover you use in regular life. It’ll clog your arteries. And NO butter, lard and saturated fat do not ‘clog’ your arteries. Lots of research to show this is a myth and why so many are sick now which has stemmed from the change in diet from the 70s and 80s and convince food 😢
Are you a Doctor?
Fascinating video, thank you.
You allotted yourself too much jam. If it's one pound every two months, that's half a pound per month. Divide by four, 'cause there's four weeks in a month, and you get an eighth of a pound per week. That's only two ounces. You literally gave yourself TWO weeks' worth, for this one-week video.
As delightful of a walk down history this was... HOW did it change the game for you???
TBF, a lot of us in the UK could do with cutting down to this because we eat and waste too much food.
I found it interesting that your ration measurements were in ounces and pints.
Love It❤
How interesting x
I notice there appears to be no breads but moms or gramas would bake bread 10 or 12 loaves at a time and share it out and use it as a barter product. If you suffer from swelling in your hands and feet, try salt saturating a half litre of water in a 1 litre jar. After you have stirred the salt in for 3 minutes and have a bit in the bottom, add a teaspoon of it to your drinking water. I started doing this 5 months ago and I no longer wake up puffy and swollen. I love your challenge! Just fascinating.
This was a real nostalgic trip for me… my beloved Granny used the wear headscarves just like these. Thank You 😘🌻
whole meal flour, not the same thing as whole wheat flour?
It is the same thing.
@@lendawes6180 then, the recipe is similar to the standard homemade whole wheat, though the trouble finding whole wheat flour is surprising. though, afair, whole wheat boosting was a north american thing from the era of preventing masturbation with corn flakes, so i guess it's fair it'd be a struggle to find it in more sane places. whole wheat bread is better tasting, less like bread shaped cake, should be a more common baker thing.
