SFL Episode 144: Ryo Onishi - the Power of Systema
This episode sees the return of Ryo Onishi (Systema Japan) to the podcast, with an engaging discussion of developing real power in Systema. As usual, Ryo brings practicality and a healthy perspective to a topic that can easily drift into the esoteric and impractical. Here, we get into:
Common points of confusion
Aspects of power development: lightness, ease, asymmetric responses
How to know if you're on the 'right' track
Use of power in combat and life
If you enjoyed this topic...

Very thorough and clear explanations. Great video.
Thank you for your work Glenn. It's very invaluable to get views from more experienced Systema practitioners, especially from distance learning.
Will you do a part 2 ?
Il grande Ryo
Excellent. Thank you Glenn and Martin.
Saludos desde Argentina mil gracias por compartir tanta información
How can I join from south Africa?
Thank you both for the wonderful talk and for sharing all this systema wisdom! I'm not sure I'm familiar with the interlocking of joints concept (might call it differently but it could actually be a new topic to me) could you explain to me the "theory" of it, or redirect me to some videos/webpages with an explanation? Thank you very much!
This is so refreshing. Thank you.
Thanx wonderful people. I try to learn along if you could give some links to videos I thank you 🙏
Plzzzzz let him speak
พรเเสงพจณิชา
It's amazing to see how relaxed and fluid the movements are, which Systema is known for training. People often see things like this and don't understand what's happening- but it's evident that the practitioners are moving slowly enough to give the mind some time to process the situation, but lively enough that the defender doesn't get trapped in conscious thought (and instead move more with mu-shin or "no mind", naturally, or in flow). It is often taken for granted the importance of relaxation (and prevention of unnecessary tension). Not only is it important to train the ability not to panic under pressure, but also to be able to function well within it. Would love to train with you guys sometime!
Many thanks for the kind words and astute observations, Mark. You are more than welcome to train with us any time.
Hey, Glenn! Please do a video about the history of systema, talking about: Mikhail Ryabko, Vladimir Vasiliev, if it was bullshit in the mikhail era, what changed through time, if it a combat system, a self defense system, a military system, if you really have that "improvised weapons" thing, if systema is an ancient martial art like mikhail would say, if systema was really used in the russian army back in the day and if it's used in the army now. Let me tell you that teaching techniques without giving people information is useless. There is much doubt around systema, we just can't find good information about it, and therefore we can't trust it. If you start giving historical background and some theorical explanations you'll be the most famous systema teacher in the world, even better if you can react to some systema videos around youtube. No one knows the systema masters besides mikhail, but you can change that.
Thanks, but it has never been my goal to be the most famous Systema teacher in the world. I am content to continue training, studying, and learning from the best. This podcast was born merely to contextualise Systema and its benefits for those genuinely interested in learning. I feel no deep need to defend it. That said - I did chat with Systema practitioner and academic historian James Sommerville on this topic, some time ago. If this is your area of interest, might I direct you to that conversation, or to James directly. blubrry.com/systemaforlife/68252752/episode-116-james-sommerville/
This is a fantastic explanation of learning to see deeper into interactions. Thanks!!
Thank you for sharing this conversation. Once I started studying Systema and applying it to my 10 years of Wing Chun training, not only did my Wing Chun improve, but my overall physical, spiritual, and psychological health improved.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 Biggest load of crap I've ever watched
Like tigers playing. Great stuff !
Great 💥💥💥
how can i do that by bigger, stronger persons ? I cant move my brother a little bit.
The same way. If they're bigger, once they're past a certain point gravity does the rest.
8:00 First person ever mentioning confidence intervalls when talking about sample statistics.
Loved it. I especially loved the part where you Martin quoted Lance and said 'you can get away with a lot in a nice school, in a nice atmosphere but when you're on the side of a slippery hill with some dude running at you with a stick, trying to, whether he's trying to hurt you or not, the potential for damage is increasing massively you start to understand what Systema training is for because then you have to put yourself in this relaxed, mobile, capability and you have to be aware of your footing and your overall awareness is increasing many fold and you're also a bit tired.'
Nicely explained
None of this would ever work on someone who was resisting
Correct. Well observed.
@@ncsystema8578 Then why teach it? Why not teach techniques that are actually known to work against resisting opponents?
A good question. Any technique can be resisted or escaped, once you are aware of what is happening. That goes for body locks,, double-leg takedowns, shoulder throws, anything. If this were not the case, Olympic wresting and judo matches would resolve themselves a lot sooner. So yes - these “techniques” - if taken as such, will not work on an opponent who has anticipated and is actively resisting them with the requisite skill and strength. Same goes for any kind of takedown. One way of getting around this limitation is to do the same technique faster or harder. Another way is to fake, feint, or hide your intended attack, exploiting mis-steps in position those efforts create. A third - and more difficult - way, is to train yourself to exploit gaps in your opponent’s awareness, imbalance your opponent in ways that do not trigger resistance or defensive movements in the first place. If you don’t know what that means, then I’m afraid you’re not going to learn it through words or TH-cam clips. This is a difficult way to work, and it is not always successful. But when it does work, it changes the entire balance of a fight. This way or working is also by no means limited to Systema or Russian martial arts. You will find examples of this in high-level boxing, kickboxing, grappling, and weapon arts worldwide. We just put a higher emphasis on it in training than some. Thank you for your interest.
@@ncsystema8578 I'm a purple belt in bjj. I train nogi grappling and mma every day. Im not here to argue on the internet about which martial art is better... but the one thing I am gonna say is, every single systema guy I have ever met on the mats has been absolutely terrible.
Fair enough. You’re entitled to your opinion, and can only base it upon experience. All the best.
Which knuckles do you use for striking? Good to video
Any Systema in the Denver area
Only guys I know are in the Longmont/Boulder area. www.systemacolorado.com/
