Glasair III - Custom Electric Trim Gearbox Fabrication
And by "custom" I mean chopping up an existing gearbox and slapping a motor on there, I guess.. this 28V motor will subsequently be connected to a GSA 28 and controller on the flight stick to control the elevator trim. It was carefully selected to provide a specific torque/RPM at a specific amperage, as the GSA 28 doesn't allow motors that go over 1A unless you want even more complex circuitry.. I do not.
A note. I actually ended up going back and redoing this a tad bit, to replace the aluminum rod joiner with a more solid steel one.. but the process was largely the same, so I thought it a bit boring to show you guys that footage. The design is the same.

A really fun day.. we decided to split the crank on this Lycoming IO-540-K1G5.. Originally, I wasn't planning on doing a full overhaul, but it already was in pieces, so not too much more to go the entire way! After we recorded this video we decided to order the rest of the parts to take us the rest of the way as per Service Bulletin No. 240 W.. Not cheap but definitely cheaper to do it now than...

    At 6:52 "people lie" true story. Very interesting to see this. Retired Master Mechanic who would have gone to Embry Riddle if I had the opportunity to do it all over again. The only thing about aircraft is that technology change comes slowly, (except on the dashboard) and I understand why. Nevertheless, I think aviation would have been more fun than the career in emissions repairs I ended up doing. 😮

      @everettengineers While I might normally agree with that, I lost all my tools, mill, lathe, tooling and inventory in the neighbors tire fire in Phoenix. Literally melted the copper out of every motor, welder etc. Liquified tool box drawer fronts. So I'm still trying to get over that, and just don't feel like going into debt with the Snap-On man at my age. I do miss the mill and lathe big-time.

    Something I did that I also did not mention.. I ended up going back and ordering Teflon washers (sort of hard to find) to replace the Nylon ones.. not that Nylon wouldn't do just as a job, but wanted to do it right!

    Have you considered countersinking the drag brace mounting bolts in the nose gear well? Mine is similarly configured, but I’m giving it some thought. Also, 2 sump valves on the main? Do you have a split wing tank?

    • @everettengineers
      @everettengineers หลายเดือนก่อน

      Issue I was having was less so the mounting bolts on the drag brace and moreso the tie bolt on the wheel itself catching on the brackets.. so I solved both the tie bolt (I had to grind it down a bit), and the brackets. I have a good amount of clearance on the bolts connect the drag brace to frame. As long as nothing catches when you do both manual retractions and hydraulic a dozen or so times, you should be good. All things considered, what I'm fixing, in an emergency likely wouldn't prevent the gear from coming down.. but last thing I want is to shred off the metal brackets. Are your mounting bolts in the nose gear catching? You have to have everything installed before you do tests, because a lot of the hardware is there to keep the wheel straight as it comes up, it might be catching because the wheel isn't straight (which can happen if drag brace isn't installed yet)

    • @everettengineers
      @everettengineers หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the split tank.. I am not sure, but likely. There is a fuel selection valve in the cockpit

    • @Glasair_1SS
      @Glasair_1SS หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haven’t cycled the NG other than by hand at present, but I had read of some other people (either on GAOA or in the old Glasair newsletter) having issues with bolts catching. No issues with it catching originally on my setup, but I also replaced my engine mount recently, so I’ll have to recheck alignment when I get back to work on it in the spring. As of now, I’m looking at options for fabricating drag links (I missed the chance to buy Hanson’s fancy ones). Split tank makes sense, since at least one access port on the copilot side was offset to the right. I have a central tank, and the access panel on the top of the tank is centrally located. My selector valve goes between the ~63 gallon wing tank and a 7.75gal header tank on the firewall.

    • @everettengineers
      @everettengineers หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ I might have a single drag brace mounting bracket that is counter sunk I didn’t even install yet, I might have a second one.. if you do end up needing one feel free to reach out to

    Very cool. Thinking about trying the same. My hangar mate has a 3d scanner he wants to play with. Currently have the vision panel, and to keep true to the glass history, I thought it might be find to modernize it and 3d print a negative to make a new contoured glass panel.

    That engine required BMW LL-01 oil. I don’t believe that oil has that rating. Most of the better oil filters (Wix, Mann) come with new o-rings and crush washer for the drain plug. If you change them, make sure you put them in the same place (take a picture of the old ones in place).

    Really please tell your viewers that the bumper cover doesn’t need to be removed, lots of work and every time you pull the cover it weakens the plastic tabs on the cover. Like another comment drive the car on 2”x4”s to initially raise the car. The purchased rubber pucks deform a lot, better to make your own from real hockey pucks as it’s a harder rubber. I've never used those filter wrenches or straps before unless I can't get it off but I have always just hand tightened the filter back on with my hand. People have always over tightened them with a wrench. They don't need to be super tight just a good snug is all you need. Never had a problem.

      Google your model, look for the front jacking point.. most BMWs should have one in the front. It might be WAY back there. You might need a flashlight to see it. For BMWs, you might even need a special long jack.

    Hmm! Why take off the front bumper just to jack it up? Just use two pcs of 2 x 4 and drive it up on the front wheel. That will allow you to have enough clearance to slide the jack under.

    • @everettengineers
      @everettengineers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They held up ok, definitely can bend a bit but it has a lot of grip so it won't be slipping. Mine are rubber, and not plastic, too, so that's good. I feel like a metal adapter might damage the plastic, or damage your jack, although maybe I'm wrong.

Want to finish ALL painting before I go through and sand, compound, polish, and ceramic coat.
