4.4 metre Rapier 440 designed and built by Bob Lee, foam sandwich construction and self draining floor. Unfortunately only four were built in the 1990's but a very stable easily driven hull. Also a Bob Lee designed and built Neptune 180 inflatable is shown which is based on the hull of his very successful 18ft race boats.

A two day boat camping holiday on Lake Tarawera, central North Island of New Zealand, a very active thermal area. 14ft Aluminium boat with 20hp Johnson outboard motor. Camera is Panasonic FT3
I’ve got the exact same outboard, still going strong after many years 👍🏼
Hey bud, would you be able too tell me roughly were that doc camp is, and also we're the doc hot pool is? I'm interested in taking my friend there as he hasn't explored much of nz. I've a boat so would be the perfect mission.
Nice engine
Thanks for sharing, big👍
👍 👌
First 👍
Awesome video
Beautiful place.
You timed the tide on Tarawera just right I see. A true Auckland "Master and Commander"! 👍😅
Welcome,nice like to
thank you too as I need a Holiday and a ood Run in my New Jet Boat ..
Nice walking tour. Thanks my friend
Thank you.
Is this lake spring fed or?
Gerard the whole lake lies in a Geothermal area with hot water bubbling up through the ground in many areas. Hot streams as well as the lake foreshore
👌
Very nice...18 foot?.....I have the 16 foot cabin boat...with pull outs.....Nice sleeping aboard.
paradise
Nice. Amazing lake New zeland
I'm going to do this in Canada. I have a 14' tiller steer tinny with 25HP main and a 5 HP kicker. Where did you get the balls that go between your tarp and the top of your extendable poles? I am going to steal your idea of small door knobs on the sides of the gunwales. Thanks!
Love the vid, you’ve inspired me to take my son there soon. Which month were you there in? Trying to figure out best time of year as don’t want it to be too busy, yet not too cold either. Cheers
Gorgeous place.
Heya Scott. What a great video, I’m due for a family trip with the parents on the lake end of year after uni semester is over. We have a 18 foot Kestrel family cruiser. Only 10 of them were built in NZ in the 80’s and they are essentially a kestrel yacht/trailer sailer without the sail components and replaced with a 30hp Yamaha. Can sleep upto 5 if you are really keen. But built to sleep 3. Those fyrans are great machines. Kiwis love em aye. Also my little tip for camping, always bring insect repellent, earplugs and an eye mask so nothing can annoy you, especially a bunch of swans.
Hi jetot37, a long time ago but I think around May I was there, I remember zero Deg C at night but the water was warm so kept the boat cozy. Yes I know the Kestral family cruiser, a top boat for that sort of trip.
Machiine how much HP you
Hi 20hp
Go to 845 for the fart
I love camping in tent on hot water beach! I have been there once ever year for 2017 2018 & 2019 and have already booked for 2020!!!! It's changed so much since this video, for the better!!!
It certainly is, I really hope I can get back there soon
whats the little motor for?
Incase you break down in the middle of the lake
Great video and a fine naration as well. Boat camping is really wonderful and you left it natural and did not ruin it with ad on music. Great spot and a very warm and realistic video.
Thank you very much
hotpools gone now, got washed out when the stream flooded in April
Heck what a shame, I will be heading down there again this year, at least the hot water should continue bubbling up.
its been rebuilt its bigger and deeper now
Yeah it still great!!
Very nice!
Amazing peacefull places. Greetings from Greece.
Thanks Joe.
Hello from Napier.. Thanks for the video
Thanks for taking a look.
tairua1 g’day again mate, i went and camped at the outlet with my 9 year old son just the other day for three days it was our first visit.... it took a year! to finally get one ticked off my list. I’m so glad I went. Somehow I ended up here and watched your video again. Lake Waikaremoana is another great place camp.
You are right Brent, I have boated and camped around the shores of Waikaremoana and it is stunning.
what kind of boat is that?
Hi, it is a locally built Fyran 14ft aluminium boat.
One question, where is located teh water Pump?, or does the engine work with ari cooling?. Regards.
+Ronnie Pitti Ronnie there is no water pump but in a tractor it worked with the thermosyphon method through a radiator. I was going to use an electric pump.
Hey Thank you, I was away for a few days, we have an issues with our motor, because is overheating and loose power, we have no clue how to solve it. Do you know how to test that thermosyphon on this engine model? I do appreciate the reply.
Ronnie I won't be much help to you because I have never run it using a radiator, for test runs I just run the garden hose to it. The thermosyphon system is fixed and very simple so I would probably look for a blocked radiator or maybe an engine problem like a blown head gasket. Sorry not much help, Google might have a few answers.
+tairua1 One more time thank you, de took the radiator out and clean it out, the engune is running fine and cool now. It seems that was a little blocked by debries inside. Good luck with the boat project. Regards.
How did you secure the tarp to the sides of the boat?
+DBay Boyds It was pretty easy, just discovered some small aluminium door knobs that attached with a single screw to the boat. They had a half round cut out which prevented the tarp straps from sliding off
Thanks for the video what size taro ate.you using?
The views are fantastic...shame your not a professional photographer or videographer...it's amazing....what part of the year was that? thank you!
+andreiiasi Hi just a camper first videographer second but it was a while ago and I now have a 4k camera and hope to do another trip down there. That trip was late May.
beautiful lake good vidio thanks
any progress? Post up some vids. don't be a tease
what a great video, is that a volcanic area causing the hot springs, love your camping boat, gave me some good ideas
Yes it is pretty much the centre of the thermal region, makes boating good all year round with many hot water springs
What a nice trip there! and the enviroment...wooow! I did like that kind of trip. Check out my channel :-) . Hi from the swedish guy.
Thank's
hi there scott looks like im betting your videos veiws on the windows 8 join domain
Scott - Thank you for sharing your adventure. Lake Tarawera looks like a beautiful place to explore and you did a nice job of telling your story. I appreciate the elegance in simplicity with which you constructed your camping boat too. kudos - Rick
Generous comments Rick, thank you.
I remember doing a school camp here as a kid, climbing mt tarawera, sliding down the volcanic scoria, orienteering in the bush. Thanks for the memories. In Oz now, have to take my kids back one day.
Thanks for the comment, I am putting another boat together and hope to get back down there in a couple of months, there are still parts yet to explore.
Yeah and the local Ngati what not tribes or something now say you are not allowed to climb the mountain, my father told me about the good old days going up and down the mountain all the time, and catching trophy Rainbow trout. I mean the trout is obviously just the management of the fishery, but the mountain is really just sad not being able to do it anymore, and many tribes are continually doing this, the local Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe in Taupo is now saying they own Lake Taupo and talking it to court, in a public society with diverse cultures it is wrong! But they would call YOU racist for it! We need to fight it!
Hi, yes it is a New Zealand built Fyran 14ft, mostly welded with the seats riveted.
thanks do you know what kind of boat it is
thanks for looking?!!!?/!
I am not much of a fisherman but after hearing the lake is well stocked I may have to learn. Sadly they don't allow campfires which is a shame as there is nothing nicer after a good day.
