How to NATURAL DYE red and pink with COCHINEAL | Cotton fabric | natural colours | CasaCaribe |
Cochineal is an insect that lives on the prickly cactus in the Canary Islands; They produce an intense colour great for natural dyeing, and the colours vary from pink to red and purple. In this tutorial, I will explain how to obtain a vibrant colour on cotton fabric.
I used cochineal from the brand CANATUREX; They have been producing cochineal in Canary Island for generations; their cochineal has the label of origin form the European Union, and has a high concentration of carmine acid, with gives stronger colours.

How many washes do you think the green colour will last? Will soap waah it out??
Hi, sister, thanks,
Can a garment be soaked in water only without any additives?
Is that fabric wet before keeping the flower's?
Hi :) yes, the fabric is wet before putting the flowers 🤗
@@CasaCaribe can we use any type of leaves n flowers?
@@jijinipramod2574 I recommend using flowers that are known for their dye properties, like Marigols, coreopsis, cosmos, daffodils or leaves like nettles or eucalyptus.
@@CasaCaribe thank you so much for your reply...
Any mordants you use?
What mordant did you use here?
Hi, I used aluminium acetate to mordant the fabric, and then sed ferrous sulphate to change the colour and create the marble effect. Unfortunately, I used a techinque I read online of heating the AA to mordant, the problem is that the high temperature ruined the aluminium acetate, and that is why the initial colour is not a strong yellow. :) in this post on my blog I explain the methid I normally use. www.casacaribe.art/post/how-to-mordant-cellulose-fibres-for-natural-dye
I m very impress your information
Thank you so much 💚🥰
Very good I m also chemist our comny chroma pigment & Dye stuff in pk we produce pigment Dye for textile printing
Hi :) I would love to learn a lot more about the chemistry of natural dyes. PK means Pakistan? greetings from Wales 💚
❤❤❤
Thanks 💚
Very cool! Thank you for the video. Where do you get the Ferrous Solfate? I have powdered Gum Arabic, any idea how much I should use?
Thanks! You can find ferrous sulphate in some pharmacies or on Amazon; Is normally used as a supplement for does with anaemia. To use the powder gum Arabic you need to mix it with water. Boil water, let it cold a little then, pour over the powdered gum, stirring to make sure there are no lumps. Keep stirring until you have a homogenous mix. The ratio is 1 part gum to 2 parts water. 🤗
@@CasaCaribe Thank you so very much!

Thank you so much Laura! 1🤠🌵💜
Thank you so much for letting me visit your laboratory and learn more about the wonderful cochineal from Canary Island 💚
Cochineal????? You mean "cochinilla"? At least the French cochenille has some resemblance..
The insect is the Dactylopius coccus. The English word is Cochineal; in Spanish is Cochinilla. My native language is Spanish and, I always get so confused with this word. 🥴
I didn't know that we have cochineal production in Europe. Thanks for the video.
Hi 😊 thank you so much!
This was so soothing, thank you! I needed this today. The explanations, the music and the water sounds. Top quality
Thank you so much 😊🥰 It makes me happy that you enjoyed the video. Greetings from Wales.
Can you produce indigo please share it
Hi 🥰 I'm not an expert in indigo, but I'm planning to do a video explaining an easy way to get a small jar of indigo vat. I hope to publish it in the next couple of months.
Beautiful Thank you for sharing your experience
Thank you 💚
Thanks for sharing! does it dry opaque? does it bind to the paper or does it scrape off?
Hi :) It dries opaque, it binds with the paper because we used gum Arabic as a binder. Just vare in mind that some of the specks of eggshells may scrape from the paper, especially if they are big.
Beautiful 🎉
Thanks 💚
I have soda ash is that the same thing?
Hi :) Soda ash is normally used to change the PH of water; unfortunately does work as a mordant, you can use ferrous sulphate, aluminum acetate or copper sulphate to mordant the fabric.
Hola!
Thank you Casa Caribe! What a fabulous idea! ❤❤❤😊
Thank you 💚 I think this is one of my favourite natural dye techniques.
Thanks very interesting wound like to learn more
Thank you 💚 if you would like to learn more about natural dyes you can visit my website blog: www.casacaribe.art/blog Here I have articles about mordanting , tannins, and others. :)
🎉thanks a lot
Thank you so much 💚
Absolutely stunning, appreciate so much what you do for the community and teaching us to draw closer to the nature. Love the colors. How will these colors stay on the fabric? do you need to use any fixatives/mordants?
Thank you so much for your kind words, they made my day 💚 For the colour to stay on the fabric, I mordant the fabric using Aluminum acetate. It is also important to use a natural dye source that is well known for its colour properties, like marigold.
Can u explain about pretreatment for clothes❤
Hi 😊 On my website, you can find a lot of information on how to pretreat the fabric, If you are using cellulose fabric I recommend using this technique to mordant the fabric: www.casacaribe.art/post/how-to-mordant-cellulose-fibres-for-natural-dye. You will need tannins and aluminium acetate.
Can I use for not 110% cotton fabric ? If not what can I use?
Hi, you can use any fabric as long as it is natural fibre, like linen, hemp, silk or wool. If you use a synthetic fabric the colour will not bond with the fabric.
It’ turned out very light beige color, thank you for the video; you saved me lots of time in experimenting.
Yes, with dandelions you will get a light yellow 🟡 is a nice thing to try because dandelions are everywhere ☺️ but you're right, it requires a lot of time.
😮 qué técnica ❤❤
Muy hermosa, cierto? 💓 Un abrazo!
Hello, last week I had sent you a question through the intake form on your site, I did not had received a reply back. Now I'm wondering if you received my question?
Hello, I'm so sorry, I was working full time this week, I'm going to check my email right away 😊 thanks

Have you ever tried mordanting with copper liqueur, i think nettke naturally contain copper, si a copper mordant wokld enhance this and accentuate the green tones
Hi! Wow thank you so much, I didn't know nettles contained copper, I haven't tried mordanting with copper but I will definitely try it now. 💚
Do blackberries last in dying?
Hi :) Unfortunately, blackberries don't last with natural dyeing, they normally shift to after one wash.
thank you!
THANK YOU 💚
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience!❤
Thank you so much for watching and encouraging me to continue 💚
thank you!😊

Hello mam I from India how i buy your book it is available on Amazon site please guide me
Hello, sorry for the late reply, my book can be found on my website www.casacaribe.art/shop. It is an online book, so you can download it rigth away.💚
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such a sweet way! Such a surprising result, the ink black coming from the pomegranate; I would expect red or pink! 🤩🫶
Thank you so much for your kind comment. 🥰 is true when you dye with pomegranate you expect something like yellow or red, black is such an unexpected colour to get from nature. Lots of love 💚
You are great mam May God bless 🙏
Thank you 💚 bless you!
Hie can we store the mixture as well? If yes how long and refrigerated or not ? Thanks for the video
Hi! Unfortunately, the mixture does not last more than a couple of hours, because the acidity of the vinegar will become less strong with time. So you will need to prepare the mixture from scratch every time :(
Hello did you use any product while washing after dyeing?
Hello 😊 because I pre-treat the fabric with aluminium acetate, I don't need to use any fixing product after dying. this process is called mordant the fabric, If you want to know more, please check my blog post: www.casacaribe.art/post/how-to-mordant-cellulose-fibres-for-natural-dye. After dying I wash the fabric with neutral soap.
Thanks a lot Casal this vedio is the best I’ve watched about bundle dye I paint on silk and I’ll try this soon because I loved it thanks again
Hello 😊 It makes me so happy to hear about that 💚 thank you so much. May I ask you what you use to paint on silk? what type of paint. Thanks
