Cars of this era didn't had the sophisticated and bulky power units and electronics of today, as well as sequential gearbox which made gear transitioning easy, so back then, it wasn't just driver vs driver, it was also, driver vs machine vs driver because everything had to be done manually without electronic assists.

Brand new asphalt. That's why it looks like a mirror. This was practice for the first race ever on the Circuit Île Notre-Dame, later named Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. Incidentally, the latter actually won the race on that weekend after this heavy rain turned into light snow, which was a symbolic victory for a snowmobile champion.

Remember he’s changing gears on corner exit. Which means one hand is coming off the wheel as he’s applying power. Huge Nuts. HUGE.

Chris Harris just led me to this video and my God the level of zero fu©ks given for full throttle aquaplaning on the straights is immense. . This isn't even a "when men where men" moment for me. This is a "when men were allowed to be men" moment. I wish they would make cars, tires and regulations that would allow the bold to push on once again. . PD was a legend. Hopefully more legends will be allowed to show their true grit once again.

He was a great driver - every video of him giving it maximum beans as in this one. Love the bits in this where it breaks away and he still keeps his foot in!. Can't beat that DFV sound either - shame modern F1 engines don't sound this good.

Sur..ALFA..ROMEO..il avais d ailleurs signalé à son coéquipier iTALIEN..un soucis sur la suspension....son coéquipier avais essayé sa voiture et n avais lui. Rien remarqué. De majeur. ..malheureusement. sa suspension a cède. En appui. .et il s est tué. ( depailler avais donc raison ))..j ajoute que depailler avais beaucoup de sensibilité. Technique. Il faisait. Beaucoup de moto cross. ..il avais l avantage. Majeur de piloter. Aussi avec son CU....sur le mouillé. Sans ASSITANCE. Technique. C une qualité qui. Fait la différence. Comme jacky. Ickx. Qui était très très fort sur le mouillé. C aussi lié à évidement son talent NATUREL. Mais à la pratique de la moto ...Patrick depailler était le plus rapide des pilotes français. Ken. TYRELL..ne se gênait pas pour le dire. Et ken tyrell en.as vu défiler des pilotes. STEWART. Entre autre....

Totally insane! What a skill! The car seems to run on ice. The engine overrevs and the car oversteer almost ever! 😳 What a Nightmare to complete a race in these conditions on a track like this!

He needs a boat not a formula 1 car for that circuit considering the conditions.
