The Mystery of the White, Powdery Line on Honey Bees
In the fall, you might see your bees entering the hive covered in a mysterious white powder. It may even look like a perfect white stripe on their backs. What is it?!
It's jewelweed pollen! This plant can be orange or pale yellow in color with deep flowers. The bees must climb fully inside the flower to retrieve the pollen.
Fun fact about jewelweed: when crushed up, it can be used as a topical salve for poison ivy!

Would you insulate the bottom of the hive too?
Can you tell me please i live in Pennsylvania and i have 5 hives i wanna ask you because now is october and i like to know do i should be feed my bees with this bricks sugar please
What % should you run this machine at for the 72 hours?
Great video, thanks for sharing :)
Gray and yellow too?
I like the hook idea, does it actually work to keep the predators out? I have a bear completely dislodge my hive and I have straps hooked to buried blocks
😂
Interesting
That's reassuring. I have seen this a few times.
Thank you, this step by step instruction made this attachment easy.
Another invaluable video from Ann!
We thought we would try the Hog Halfcomb Kit this year (since we have had bees for many years and had success with comb honey) but NONE of our hives did anything with it, so it was a big waste of money.
Where did you get that grey thing you’re spilling wax on
That's actually the lid to one of our plastic uncapping tanks: www.betterbee.com/uncapping-tools-and-equipment/uctcover-uncapping-tank-cover.asp
I was hoping you were going to mention the kind of weather you needed. We are having this constant rainfall early fall and I'm not sure if it's a good time even though the temperatures are high.
What is the spray called that you use to spray the mould before pouring the wax into it?
Hi there! We use this silicone mold release spray: www.betterbee.com/candle-molds/CR2-Silicone-Mold-Release.asp
Do you think you can get people to understand this nope lol the old guys in Canada just won’t listen they just want them top vents
What do the bees eat during the 20 days?
I have no words to express the casual ways you did in availing these natural honey for the world people.I can say again you are the SMART People Working with SMART SWARM!!!.I look forward to sharing your experience with you. Please go ahead and all our community need way of having honey.
So how do you use it? How many days on, number of treatments? Temp? That's the information I was looking for. I know how to open a plastic pouch.
Very true. This was original footage from the manufacturer. We have released our own instructional video that can be found here: th-cam.com/video/J09ZiddQkNg/w-d-xo.html. Hope this helps!
That’s great!! When you only have couple hives in the back yard it’s easy to forget when it’s 2 or more years before it needs washing.
Thanks for sharing! I’m a 56 yr old first time beekeeper and the thought of a lighter weight jacket is awesome. You are so brave! I’ll have to remember this and maybe get one. Have a great day!
Nice 👍 very nice 👍 i prasiate you lady for sharing this knowledge 🙏❤️
I have a long hive without space on top, can I feed them framed patties late fall and winter?
You must be a paddler. :)
Fantastic talk! Thanks so much! I'm a beekeeper and an engineer too! But, I am in the South. I hope that just top insulation is enough!
Omg! Thank you . I’ve been struggling to do this . Your video and instructions were so easy . I did it straight away . So helpful . Thank you Lyn from wales Uk
John Hogg was my neighbor. I remember when he was inventing this system. He was a world renowned medicinal chemist who, with his team a The Upjohn Company, developed the synthesis of steroids from plant sterols. Very important chemistry.
Lifesaver
Uneven, slow and messy. Never like this but thank you for showing.
How much and were are you
Don't wait 2 minutes, use a container with water and move to hit after 20-30 seconds. You're gonna have much better production throughput, saving energy for warming the beeswax
I am so fascinated! I had no idea
I tried it once. Not sure of its efficacy, but waiting 3-4 weeks to put the supers back on and then having to worry about harvesting a month after adding the supers just seems like a huge hassle as opposed to proven formic or oxalic treatments.
Absolutely agree! For plenty of hives at plenty of times of year, this is far from the most convenient miticide option. But for those that want to rotate treatment compounds, and those of us with seasonal weather that allows us to harvest our honey and then do a month or so of thymol-based treatments, it's always good to have more weapons in the mite-control arsenal.
Do you have any suggestions for how this product could be used with a Long Langstroth?
Hi! Do you have a honey dryer? How can we set the temperature?
What happens if your hive has a 3-4 inch wide entrance?
Nice video. Thanks, Anne.
pretty sure I have bees in my bedroom walls. they came in thru an outlet with no cover or appliance on it. the outlet is over 2 stories in the air. would you think a thermal imaging camera might work to tell me (from the inside) where they are and the extent to which they've made it home? I doubt I can afford to hire someone. what does it typically cost (ballpark). I'm 70 - hubby is 74. he thinks we should just kill them. he doesn't really want to, so your argument against that was helpful. I used to have bees but they swarmed. I still have all the equipment.
Hi there! An infrared camera will certainly show the heat map of where the bees are inside your wall. Also, many beekeepers do wall cutouts "for free," but will leave your home in need of repair (e.g. if they cut a huge hole out of your drywall to get the bees out, you'll have to replace that out of your own pocket). You can use our swarm catcher list to find someone nearby to contact about it: www.betterbee.com/swarm-catchers/
@@betterbee1979 none in our area. so looks like it's up to me. I'd have to repair the damage anyway, so that part didn't bother me. but I'd like to keep the bees, and most swarm catchers do it for the bees.
This video was so helpful! Thank you so much for posting it.
Can we find the price of the jacket in the 2024 catalog? Thanks for sharing this
ooooooooo such a "Mean Hive" I bet you wouldn't want to do that in Texas 😆. Thanks for the show anyway
👏 good job
Unfortunately, our beekeeping team is so on top of things that they pinch any queens showing nastier genetics than this! This was the meanest of what was available to us for this quick test. I've worked plenty of Africanized hives before, and I guarantee I would have gotten more stings from them. But for a hive with a tolerable temperament, I was surprised at how much protection this jacket offered. (You'll notice that I get less tense as the video continues. I wasn't sure how many stings I was signing up for at the start of the filming!)
Hahaha, that's not an aggressive hive. Come to AZ and work an Africanized hive.
We're lucky to not have Africanized bees up here! Kudos for putting up with that.
why no smoke?
Hi Billy, this was a product test during which we WANTED the bees to get irritated with us, to test how our new jacket performs when it comes to stings. We use smoke every other time we open a hive!
Has anyone tried the Amiflex for mite controls,
Where we contact for buy
The gloves aren’t sewn in?
I love slatted racks.
Great video! Thank you.
Very useful and much of this info is new to me. I thought I knew about varroa.
Its better to dip your mold in water with a few drops of dish soap in it before applying the wax, I have found a ladel is the best tool, I just half fill my ladel and pour a little wax so it runs to 1/5th of the length and then slowly lay the top down, this will push the wax along the mold and with very little overspill, because you have wet the mold with soapy water this acts as a release agent and the sheet will be able to be removed with zero tearout. If it does tear out you are applying too much wax. Another good technique to remove the wax is to lift the silicone edge and roll it underneath itself and then holding both sides push it forward so the roll extends, the wax will release as you push the mold forward.
