I remember the historical drama I watched where Nobunaga arrived in a devastated Kyoto for the first time with his army and he saw a man stealing a pot full of coins from a man. He then charged at the thief, drawing his sword, cutting off his head, flicked the blood off the blade then resheated it. He called his vassals and announced that he'll kill anyone who disturbs the people in Kyoto, including his own men. Later on, it was known that Nobunaga pacified Kyoto in a month. I always look at Nobunaga, Hideyoshi and Ieyasu are people who developed their personalities due to the experiences. Yes, Nobunaga exhibited ruthlessness but it wasn't because he was that from the start, his experiences shaped that. I remember the brutality he inflicted on Araki Murashige's family and vassals as a punishment for Murashige's uprising and while I don't condone it, I understood his reasons to do so. When he forced Toyotomi Hidetsugu, his own nephew, to commit seppuku, Hideyoshi executed his nephew's family, including his wives and concubines. One of those concubines is Komahime, the daughter of Mogami Yoshiaki, who just arrived in Osaka and wasn't even presented yet. This tragedy led Yoshiaki to Ieyasu, which killed off any chances of keeping the Date on their toes as the Mogami is the only clan who can challenge the Date in Tohoku. Now, with the Mogami and Date on his side, Ieyasu was able to focus on Mitsunari as the Uesugi, now based on Aizu, cannot put a pressure on Ieyasu's back due to the Mogami and Date. I do see a point in Hideyoshi wanted to protect Hideyori's right to inherit everything he fought to achieve but in doing so, he indirectly caused him not to inherit it. I know Ieyasu was also capable of cruelty and ruthlessness and he's my favorite unifier but again, he is a product of his own time, like Nobunaga and Hideyoshi.

Thank you for your logical explanation of the relationship between history and representation. As you say, misinterpretation of history is precisely the problem, and it is already causing harm, such as the rewriting of wikipedia on a global scale. In the first place, Ubi is making this game based on a false historical view. In an interview with the gaming media, UBI stated, "So looking at death was a day-to-day occurrence in that period, and the way most people died in Japan during that time is clean Basically, these are the kinds of statements that further promote not only the above historical misunderstandings, but also cultural misunderstandings. These contents are summarized in the form of the "Shadows Policollege Flame Riot(シャドウズポリコレ炎上騒動)". If you can understand Japanese, or by viewing the page with translations, you can get a Japanese perspective on the whole uproar. 歴史と表現の関係性について、論理的な説明をありがとうございました。 あなたの言うように、歴史解釈について誤解を招くことがまさに問題であり、すでに世界規模でのwikipediaの書き換えなど弊害がでています。 そもそも、じつはUBIは誤った歴史観を前提にこのゲームをつくっています。 ゲームメディアのインタビューに対して「So looking at death was a day-to-day occurrence in that period, and the way most people died in Japan during that time is clean decapitations.」と答えており、基本的にはこれらは上の歴史的誤解のみならず、文化的誤解についてもさらに助長させるような内容です。 これらの内容については「シャドウズポリコレ炎上騒動」という形でまとめられており、翻訳をするか日本語が理解できる方であるならそのページを見ることで、騒動の全体を日本人からの視点で把握することができます。

@@shark4138 Thank you for your comment. I hope you have been enjoying your weekend! Evaluating the historical accuracy of the “Assassin’s Creed” series as a whole involves considering both the accurate representation of historical settings and the fictional elements introduced for narrative purposes: • Environmental and Visual Accuracy: Approximately 80-90%. Ubisoft’s attention to detail in recreating cities, landscapes, and cultural artifacts is generally praised for its authenticity . • Events and Historical Figures: Approximately 60-70%. While key events and figures are often included, their portrayal and the context in which they are placed frequently involve significant fictionalization to fit the game’s narrative. Conclusion Ubisoft does herald the historical accuracy of the “Assassin’s Creed” series, emphasizing their extensive research and use of historical consultants. However, they balance this with creative liberties necessary for engaging gameplay and storytelling. Overall, the series can be considered approximately 70-80% historically accurate, with the understanding that while the settings and general context are often faithfully recreated, the narratives and character actions are fictionalized. This approach allows them to provide both an immersive historical experience and an entertaining game, while serving as an impetus to learn more of the legitimate history, among other things.

It's literally inaccurate with the entire game, however Ubisoft has strayed from what made the AC series great. Now, they've been using characters for some sort of "Political agenda" without outright saying it. Mirage had a Muslim character, i.e. Current war down there. Now this game has a black guy as its main character. Would've at least preferred an actual character from Japan or just a random Japanese guy meeting with people that were important to actual history of Japan.

  • @Jakesmith943

If they used a more prominent figure people would say the portrayal was inaccurate. It would limit what they could do within the story. It’s like using George Washington in an AC game. So much is known about him that you can’t really develop a “new” character around him.

I’m just saying , it’s Ubisoft’s fault for standing their ground on calling yasuke representation in game historically accurate but any person who ever played Ac knows that exaggerations on real historical characters in Ac is not a first, for the love of Christ we battled the freaking pope and da Vinci literally made a medieval Batman jet pack, where were the Sunday morning historians then, most historians that follow Ac know that there are a lot of inaccuracies in those games , I mean ubi called valhalla historically accurate and in the climax of the game you fight a god in a simulation genjutsu in your mind, the outrage is blown out of proportion and in my opinion it comes from people that barely play Ac , the only ones justified in having some real outrage are the Japanese who actually play the Ac games and feel insulted and the ones defending their history, but damn have I seen some racist and moronic comments, like calling yasuke a freaking butt slave of nobunaga or a monkey or some sort of stupid beast, that’s just stupid in my opinion especially since most of them wouldn’t be so up in arms if they played the last 4 games and for those who don’t know in mirage you could freaking teleport (an animus bs glitch) before that in odyssey it is canon you hold the power of several gods in your staff why did the historians not come out the woodworks or when kassandra fought in the Olympics ? when in that time period it wouldn’t have being allowed to women or her getting trained in the agoge in Sparta which is even more ridiculous

Would be great in the context people understood the facts and appreciated fictional creative licensing devoid of vitriol. The prevalence of racism regarding some social media outrage on Yasuke’s inclusion in AC:SHADOWS is indefensibly abhorrent. Treating every subject fairly and accurately is prudent. Yet, I do not believe someone, for example, has to share Japanese blood to speak on Japanese-related issues, especially in the context the person is familiar and learned on said topic(s). Maintaining and expanding respectful, mature, and amicable dialogue could be great; conducive to more likely positive situations and relationships in contrast to the opposite.

I share in your merriment and joy regarding the Assassin’s Creed series. I believe this is great you find quite a bit of entertainment in these historical fiction, traditionally stealth-based, parkour games that are ever-evolving to accommodate new players and styles. Yet, when I speak or comment on representation and historical accuracy, this is not about imposing an agenda; rather, I prefer to support objectivity and tamed, respectful understandings, dialogues on various issues, including creative licenses that could undeniably reap endless praise and utility. The conversation about representation and historical accuracy in games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows could be prudent to dispel asinine bigotry, among other things. I unequivocally prefer people to enjoy whatever the person finds solace and happiness in (devoid of incurring any physical harm to his or herself and others, of course). By promoting inclusivity and historical literacy and consideration, the gaming experience may be heightened in a mature, harmonious manner. @@Proundandwoke Gamers aren't putting politics into games, companies are and the only way that changes is by speaking out against it. Nobody's attacking Yasuke himself.. i could care less myself if he was made a samurai in a game. I could even overlook the "he's a samurai historically" inaccuracy if they did one thing: Respect the history and at least TRY to be accurate. Thing is, take 2min to look up torii gate and the one detail about them you'll inevitably encounter is that they are found at the entrance to or within Shinto shrines. Ubi put one at the entrance of a village. They got a particular ritual wrong, one i don't remember the name of. They stole some art from a historical enactment group, and they mixed up some character writing. Aside from the stolen art, if it was just one of these other things in isolation, human error is a thing and the backlash would have probably been minimal. All of them tho? Include all these errors together and it makes sense they wouldn't choose hattori hanzo or any of multiple other historical figures with depth and a bit more historical relevance. They just simply don't care or respect the history. For this to also be the first time in the series that's 13 entries big that they make an actual historical figure a protag.. It tells me Yasuke was chosen for checkbox reasons. It sucks too! In a perfect world, they could've had chapter 1 be where you use Naoe and you, the player, change history and ensure Oda survives his battle. In the opening cutscene for chapter 2 you get to see Oda performing the ceremony bestowing Yasuke with the title of Samurai, and then see him writing his name in his military register. Through some eventful conversations between the 3 (Naoe, Yasuke, Oda) Yasuke is given a reprieve from his duties serving Oda and ultimately joins the player as a playable character. Couple this story approach with not pushing him being a samurai historically, everyone could've had their cake and eat it too.

7:24 ; The primary sources said “black man understood a little Japanese or mediocre Japanese”. And it makes sense looking at the context. First it is easier to comprehend a new language than learn or be able to use it verbally, producing it. Second red flag, Nobunaga himself. --“When others insulted him, he did not hesitate to punish them; spoke to condescendingly, people obeyed him as if he were an absolute monarch; When talking to people, he disliked long conversations and lengthy preliminaries”;-•••The demon king narcissistic in full displayed… I won’t be surprised if he loved the sound of his own voice when talking to Yasuke. And also their nights relationship… The most concrete evidence obviously, looking at Japanese history and search more about the context around it, you would know that even the Jesuits were bad at Japanese. When it was their job to learn it. It was so difficult and frustrating that Francis Xavier called the Japanese language "the devil's own tongue". That it was created by the devil itself to stop and prevent the spread of Christianity. It is only around and after 1590 to 1603 that Jesuits improved drastically. Because of the compilation of grammar and dictionary books completed by Valignano. 10-15 years after yasuke service 1581-1582.

Yes, in historical fiction, certain aspects remain historically accurate. These typically include the setting, significant events, social customs, and historical figures. Authors often conduct thorough research to ensure these elements are depicted correctly, even while weaving fictional narratives around them. This balance helps maintain the authenticity of the historical context while allowing for creative storytelling.

Honestly, Assassins Creed as a series has always been *loosely* based on historical events, and has never truly been "Historically Accurate", as Creative Liberties have been taken in every game. So changing Yasuke from a Retainer to a Samurai, isn't that big of a stretch. Far less of one than inventing a secret war between assassins and templars, much less magic cubes and alien overlords. Especially since its plausible, albiet unlikely, that Yasuke *could* have been one. The simple fact is, we dont know for sure, as there is just enough existing documentation to suggest both possibilities, but not enough to completely prove or disprove it either way. It comes down to: -Strict Japanese cultural traditions, distast for foreigners, & preference for pale skin, vs Oda's love of foreign culture, open-mindedness, & progressive meritocracy -the years worth of martial arts and cultural arts training Samurai have to go through starting from childhood, vs the less than 2 years Yasuke was in Japan prior to Oda's death -yes, Oda gave him a house and sword, but that just makes him a Retainer and a Bushi (Warrior). And while Samurai can be considered Bushi & Retainers to their Daimyo, not all retainers & Bushi were Samurai. A Samurai is similar to nobility, so the vast majority of Bushi were not Samurai, most would have been Ashigaru (foot soldiers). -the fact that Oda didn't give him a sir name, and that he didnt commit seppuku upon Oda's death, also makes it unlikely that he became one. -however, the fact that he isn't the only foreigner in history to debatably be granted the title of Samurai, is in his favor. There is also the Englishman, William Adams, who served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and later, during the Boshin War, the Frenchman (not American), Jules Brunet (who the movie the Last Samurai is *loosely* based on) also served the Tokugawa Shogunate during its fall. -More to the above point, the fact that Tokugawa Ieyasu was Oda Nobunagas former retainer, may mean that his decision to promote William Adams, was possibly based on the precedent established by Oda Nobunaga when he promoted Yasuke. Anyways, regardless of whether Yasuke was or wasn't a Samurai, the possibility isn't too far removed from the truth to feel out of place in a Historical Fiction game such as Assassins Creed.

I feel Yasuke would be akin similar to that of John Blackthorne's character. Treated as a Barbarian. Most likely would have been killed if not for Nobunaga's enjoyment and fascination of him. But ironically, in Nioh, Yasuke himself explicitly states how the Diamyo never gave him the title of Samurai. I just find that fascinating.
