Otter at Goshawk Bait
มุมมอง 101หลายเดือนก่อน
This feral pigeon bait was put in a Northern Goshawk nest territory with a trail camera to monitor the dispersal of the young birds. Usually these baits are visited by other birds and mammals. This visiting otter was unusual though, as the bait was located 2m up a fallen tree. The otter appears to be quite good at climbing and manoeuvring on the tree.

Buteo Buteo
Beautiful footage Ronnie
“Thumped”??
Cool!
Love Goshawks,great footage..
Hi Ronnie, I'm at the other end of our island in the New Forest Hampshire. Like your trail camera footage.
@snappycanon I believe you have a good population of goshawks in the New Forest. Some people say they were never extinct in the UK and a few pairs continued to breed there.
Its a male Goshawk...
@@JohnMardon what's your point?
@@ronniegraham6334 My point is nothing of a derogatory nature whatsoever, Im just saying and maybe highlighting that is a male Goshawk as you know smaller than the female...thats all....Im sure you knew and know that anyway....Apologies for commenting...
Excellent video,i love Goshawks, the terminator of the bird world, thanks for sharing...
Don't mess with goshawk.
I am not an authority, but that is no buzzard. I believe it is another kind of hawk.
Buteo Buteo
There were no buzzards in that video
@@kathleenrose3016 Buteo Buteo Common Buzzard. It's not my fault that early explorers to America didn't know anything about birds and started calling vultures buzzards and buzzards hawks.
Sparrow Hawk surely ?
@willmitchell255 Hi, the hawk in the video is a goshawk (Accipiter Nissus) and the buzzard is a common buzzard (Buteo Buteo)
Great Ronnie I really love goshawk but never got the time to sit and watch them keep the videos coming 😆👍
WHERE DOES ANYONE SEE A BUSSARD?
Hi, read this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_buzzard?wprov=sfla1
Theres a video on you tube where someone is hunting rabbits with a goshawk, but it actually gets a buzzard, think its called the hunter becomes the hunted.
I didn't see a Black or Turkey Buzzard. I saw a Falcon and a Hawk. What gives?
Please. It's Accipiter Gentilis and buteo buteo.
As I understand it, buzzard is an English term for eagle...settlers in the USA thought they were seeing eagles.
....... Not a buzzard....
OK. I bow to your superior knowledge. Please tell me, what is this bird?
@@ronniegraham6334 They are both Hawks. But after googling I see that it's a language issue. As some types of hawks are called buzzards in some parts of the world. I guess what you're calling a buzzard would be called a red-tailed hawk here in Alabama. The first bird is a goshawk. My apologies......
@@ronniegraham6334 It's a Sparrow Hawk
@@willmitchell255 No, it's a Goshawk (Accipiter Gentilis) getting hit by a Common Buzzard (Buteo Buteo)

Buzzards in Europe and Asia refer to what we call hawks. Please don’t be in such a hurry to correct people
I've heard the name buzzard in the past I always thought they were another name for vulture, usually heard "buzzard" in western movies. After viewing this video I looked up buzzard and they're not in North America only on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean apparently, they look very much like a hawk...far from what a vulture looks like, I learned something today!
These are not "buzzards" they are Hawks. Buzzards are Turkey Vultures.
No buzzards. Hello.
It’s the British term
I saw a pair of buzzards, north of Lake Wenatchee, WA Oct 2023 while deer hunting.. I had never seen one before. By the end of the day, I saw one doe and about fifty subarus of city slickers blowing whistles all day and hollering and disturbing the peace..
Buzzards ???
Funny, I’ve always known a buzzard as a vulture.
Buteo Buteo is the common Buzzard. The original settlers to N. America were clearly not very good at recognising birds and misnamed a vulture as a Buzzard!
Bird of prey but will scavenge wen they need to
🎉
There's no Buzzard in that video.
OK . So some dummy explorer came over to USA and started naming birds that he didn't know anything about. So you've ended up with hawks that are buzzards. Don't blame me. Let's go Latin, it's hardly a new language. Buteo Buteo = buzzard Accipiter Gentilis = Goshawk These are the birds in the video.
Fowl play
What buzzard…?
Hi Jim, the bird that comes in with the worn tail is a common buzzard (Buteo Buteo) The bird that is initially on the bait that jumps off and thumps the buzzard is a male goshawk.
What's with all the bird-on-bird crime?!
Fowl play
Intelligent HAWK! Wonder what happened to the buzzard?
When I returned a week later to change the SD card I was quite amazed to see the buzzard back on the bait the next afternoon.
@@ronniegraham6334Seems that both birds are tenacious and persistent?
Must be a female???
Yes, a female.
That is not a "buzzard"
Really. So what is it then.? Remember it's Latin name is buteo buteo and the USA are renaming many incorrectly named species.
@@ronniegraham6334 It's a Sparrow Hawk
What country are you from? That was no buzzard...at least not a turkey buzzard as we know it in America.
Hi, I'm in Scotland, so this is a common buzzard (buteo buteo)
I'll be darned. Over here in the USA, buzzard means just a carrion eating bird, like a vulture. Nobody likes them. The bird in this video is impressive.@@ronniegraham6334
its so beautiful
Great vid Ronnie 😮
Cheers Peter. Hope all is well with you.
Buzzard was surelly desperate to get bite of that kill. Wild birds dont usually go so fat that there is claw to claw ineraction. It surely had really bad feather condition, but we can only guess how long "therm" that was
Love it Ronnie

Goshaws are stealth hunters. They take their time to observe their prey and strike at the best unexpected moment. The buzzard was very likely attacked from behind, so there was no long fight.
Tell me if I'm wrong but looks like a little male Goshawk ,orange eyes.
Yes, this is the male goshawk from a nearby nest site.

That Buzzard was kept in a cage look at his at Tail 😮
Interesting videos,Thankyou. Will goshawk regularly come for carrion? I’ve just seen one up a woodland I own and would love to get footage of it. It must have been female, wasn’t far from the size of a buzzard and soaring ,gliding just at tree top height last night. I’ve never been so close to one…..they’re usually about a mile away through binoculars and heading the other way 😆. Thanks again 👍
Hi. Yes, they come to carrion quite readily. I prefer to use woodpigeon as you can semi pluck them and the down really stands out. Best to get the bait up off the ground and onto a stump or similar. They really are amazing birds and to see one up close is quite unforgettable. Keep in touch. I'll be interested to hear how you get on.
Smashing, thanks for input. If I get anywhere with it I’ll be sure to share detail. Fairly sure the bird I saw was juvenile as it was fairly brown, also possibly explains why I managed to be so close. There are lots of pheasant shoots around near my wood so I can only hope it survives…… Out of curiosity do you know if sparrowhawk act similarly and come to carrion? It’s strange, I never considered gos coming to carrion. Growing up, the things I was taught about birds/nature have turned out not to be entirely true to say the least, i.e. owls eat mice and voles, peregrines eat birds, sparrow hawks eat birds. The things found in owl boxes amazed me…ducks, pheasants, juvenile rabbits. I also saw a peregrine take a rat off the street in Newcastle/Gateshead and have seen footage of a sparrow hawk diving off a bird table to catch a woodmouse. In reality, why wouldn’t they? The more time I spend observing and reading about nature, the more I’m beginning to understand that I have to keep an open mind about it. I was taught that deer eat insects by an 8 yr old last week. The lad had done a PowerPoint on deer and showed me for a review. As I paused at his point, I knew I couldn’t rule it out and obviously deer eat insects on plants(accidentally?). Looking briefly into it, some people are of the opinion that the deer may get a different type of nourishment from insects, different minerals etc. It makes sense. Question in my mind is, do they ever eat leaves with insects on on purpose? Anyway, your videos have amazed me and have greatly caught my interest. Many thanks again.
A Buzzard vs Goshawk is a very even match. The Buzzard is a tougher bird but the Goshawk is quicker.
Goshawk is tougher AND quicker than a buzzard. By a mile.
The goshawk is a very shy bird, but is far stronger than the common buzzard. When it really comes down to it, the common buzzard has no chance. The female Goshawk hawk also hunts hares. A common buzzard with its weak claws never be able to do that. The female goshawk is much larger than the male.
Stunning species. Is that tie wraps holding the prey item in place?
Hi. Yes, I use tie wraps to keep the bait in place. If you put the tie in over the spine and around the neck it keeps the bait in a good position.
@@ronniegraham6334 Smart thinking.
A beat up juvenile buzzard. Broken feathers etc.
poor guy lost a paw
Looks like he just sprained it or something, wild animals are pretty resilient
