YES! I got a GAF shingle sample from a contractor and it had those scrapings you pointed out! I was wondering if it was from being thrown around in the truck or if it was a GAF issue. How's the variation in colors? You haven't mentioned this but seems like you could have had lot/batch issues showing as weird discoloration/variations due to buying from different stores/pallets. Also, I'm finding homes in my area with new GAF roofs having bad mildew issues. More so than my 30 year old Owens Corning 3 tab shingles.

Terrible comparison Owen’s Corning destroys Gaf compare Gaf and BP shingles in that level where they belong. OC shingles are the top dog when it comes to oxidized asphalt shingles. The king of all shingles is Malarkey shingles best engineered, long lasting and not oxidized

A followup to my original comment: I had a chance to compare in hand, some full shingles...looked at malarky, certainteed and for the 1st time ever, GAF... as far as flexibility, the malarky vista blow both of the others away, same with granule retention..certainteed compared to gaf are the thickest of the 3, still reasonably flexible, better granule retention than GAF...the worst by a large margin in terms of quality of construction...by this I mean ,they were thin, shed granules and had a flexibility so poor that if you did try to roll one up, it would crack to bits....certainteed rolled up fairly well, some damage.. malarky vista, you cou roll up and unroll seeing practically no damage at all.. Owens corning, never held one in hand but better than GAF? I wouldnt doubt it

Owens Corning is not new😂 they invented the fiberglass matting used in EVERY SINGLE ASPHALT SHINGLE, every brand that is not Owens Corning when it comes to asphalt shingles is just a cheaper generic brand

You're right. Ebay no longer offers a phone number. Too many scammers are spoofing their numbers and calling sellers and buyers and scamming folks. Its best to take photos when packing items for shipping because some buyers like to lie about items. Always ship through ebay as they work with USPS and items are automatically insured just in case an item goes missing in transit. As a seller, you can file a claim with USPS to get your money back. Always be polite in messages. Ebay can see EVERYTHING when handling cases. As soon as you suspect foul play, request a call back through ebay's chat bot. Never refund an item before it's sent back to you. Never accept payments outside of ebay.

Any roofer that's had to repair a owens corning roof knows how well they hold. Gaf is ok but are poorly made. Asphalt shingles are the cheapest option out there. No asphalt shingle lasts 50yrs in our area period. 20yrs +/-5yrs depending on conditions is what you get. America is one of the only countries that prefer to put the cheapest option on their homes for some reason.

I'm convinced Home Depot buys factory rejects and sells them at full price. Has anyone taken a recent look at the lumber in Home Depot? It is definayely below average quality.

The HD doesn't stand for heavy duty it stands for high definition., meaning in different time of the day your roof will have more shadow lines.

Owens Corning may be new to your market but in the US the name goes back to the 1800s.

as a newbie researching which shingles are the best for durability. the only thing ive noticed is the utter Inconsistancy in reviews and peoples feedback... whatever the shingle manufacturer, you will find some that give it top ratings and others that say its aweful and badmouth it... this makes determining the truth about their quality Very difficult to say the least!

I removed 18 year old owens corning 3 tab that lost 90% of the granulars. I am bias as my wife has worked at Lowes for 10 years. GAF shingles are always in stock. Installed Gaf NShadow pewter. Used tyvek 200 underlayment doubled on a 2/12 pitch on an addition I had to completely rebuild and the rest of my roof I used one layer under the GAF. I am not a pro roofer but I swung enough hammers when I was a teenage working on construction sites and still work on things for people all the time , so I have plenty of expertise in the construction trade. I looked into the Owen's shingles and found out Gaf has the best tar rating and holds up so much better than owens in high winds. I know there are better shingles, Atlas has a good line that i wished was in the budget but if you install the Gaf correctly and use the proper underlayment then for the buck, it makes the most sense. Just my two cents. Peace.

You could have just have gotten a bad batch of GAF.I have gone through an Owen's Corning plant when I was working Minneapolis in about 2000.It was awesome to see how shingles are made.GAF bought out ELK and they only made Architectural Shingles.They built one of the most advanced shingle plants in California. I normally use GAF HDZ Shingles.They are rated for 150 mph winds if installed properly. By the way I have been told if you use 3tab shingles for hips and ridges then you void their warranty. You are supposed to use Timbertex hip and ridge shingles.Sure they cost more but they are quicker to install and look better.They make your roofs stand out against the competition. Just figure the increase in cost and charge a little bit more.A good friend who has been roofing for many years told me to use Timberline shingles for starters,since they are about 39 inches long.If you use 3 foot starter shingles you will save a little bit on materials and labor however eventually the Kee ways will line up and water will leak.I live in New Orleans and have done Roofing,Seamless Gutters, Siding and Patio Covers for 30 years.After Katrina us local contractors did Beaucoup repairs of roofs,Siding you name it.Some Storm Chaser Contractors do quality work but not all of them.Home Owners here are leery of out of town contractors after a storm.They mostly want to do business with reputable local Contractors. I'm not hating on storm chasers cause is still a free country(at least for now) and if you want to come down and sell jobs that's your business. I don't care what the competition is doing,I focus on what I need to do each day,deal with problems that come up and work 7 days a week.I'm a workaholic and love selling jobs,getting jobs installed and going to the Bank.And the last part is my favorite. Guy doesn’t know what he is talking about. You don’t want a stiff shingle on your roof. It will age much faster and lose granular, which OC is know for. Next time don’t use the cheapest products possible. GAF HDZ is the best asphalt 30 year Laminate on the market.

Depends on where you are. Im in Canada the rubber stuff it breaks and cracks during installation we toss more than installing.

Owens corning shingles have been around Just as long lol o.c is good you want really good shingles get atleast. If you got the n.s not the hdz you got a 30yr gaf shingle not a 50yr

22 years in roofing....GAF is not a premium product, but they do ALOT OF MARKETING when they should focus on making their product better than other better cheaper brands

What i do is put the return address as general delivery of post office so after taking as long as possible to do the return part, i then make them wait like a month after that cause its not delivered till i pick it up LOLL,, FUCK the buyer, fuck ebay, fuck a defect, fuck the whole shit cause im now barrowing money for free from a customer basically at this point.. bastards
