The biggest thing a golf course can do is have extra Tees especially on par 3s. You can switch tees boxes and let one heal for however long. This also gives a hole a different look when you dont have tees in a single row. Bigger tees also help with multiple ways on and off
I work maintenance at golf course and the par 3s get destroyed. Tees are far too small with today golfing vs built in 1992.

You should do both. Typically its better to do deep tine aeration in spring and summer
Poa is hated by most, im included in that category unless its oakmont bent
Certain home lawns do get compacted, pulling using much heavier riding lawn mower to cut grass twice a week, picking up leaves as well with heavy equipment. Aeration wouldnt hurt but verticutting would remove more dead material while removing thatch and some what aeratingjust not deep at all, just cutting lines into the ground removing material

Great work. When your doing a greens mower next I bbelieve all home putting green owners would enjoy that. If you use groomers brushes or other attachments on the greensmower reel head replacement video would be good. Home greens can benefit so much from groomers well toro call them I elieve carbon steel groomers or star groomers cant remember off the top of my head but thats why im not the mechanic and just the superintendent
This makes me want to work at a golf course now.
Brian taught my Turf Maintenance module for my red seal horticulture apprenticeship, then proceeded to give me my work experience portion at uplands Golf course. First Day he had me doing greens and fairways which takes alot of trust, but it was a great experience and trial by fire. He is a stand up guy and a true benefit to the City of Victoria and all turf and plant specialists and is still teaching me 13 years later on youtube.
Can it produce seeds at 3/4in or less? Wouldn't it need to grow to full natural height to produce seeds?
It will produce seeds at any height. They're mowing at .090 less than one tenth of a inch. I hate poa unless it's oakmont bent, a type of Poa used at oakmont country club.
Master Superintendent?,......I've been a super for 35 years,...wonder if I would qualify as a "Master"?..also,....I have never seen t markers that far apart,....try 15ft apart, and that huge tee will never show wear
Same here, retired after 34 years. Never heard of a master super! T markers way to far apart

thanks for the review of these. the hedge trimmer needs some lubrication. not sure if it's just the motor or the blades or both. the back pack blower is a waste except up by the club house, if you're hitting the course with that thing you should really be using a PTO powered air blower on a tractor. their range far surpasses, their power far surpasses and the time saved should be 50% to 80%. i get the hesitation to the tractor weight and wear & tear on the course but it's the difference of a guy walking with a back pack blower vs a passing jet liner., the back pack blower isn't significantly quiet enough and is actually higher frequency which is more disturbing and the electric back pack blowers CFM is too low, i have found 800CFM is optimal time, power and range. a worx 8oo+cfm corded blower with a 100' 16gauge power cord and as 2000w honda generator has proven to be more quiet & effective than that back pack lower and even a stihl 800C/X model. thank you for your videos, hope this tip i gave you pays back in what ever small form helps. former 36 hole silver springs monticello mn groundsman.

Have you worked with hydrojecting?
We've used hydrojecting a lot over the years, and had good success with it. The challenge is that it's a little slow.
Would you do cores ever on a tee. Looking at the main deck of my courses 1st tee and it's seriously worn. Would not cores work better than solid deep tines in those heavy traffic areas?
It depends on the makeup of your tee decks. Our tee decks are built out of sand, so they drain well. We will pull a core when organic matter builds up on them. Our organic matter content in our tees is averaging 2.4%, so solid tines are what we used this past year. We do solid and pull cores when needed.
Aeration is done everywhere on a golf course but it just depends on time. All around the country it is done at different times. Just because you see holes being punched doesn't mean Aeration is what we're going after. Root growth, oxygen in the soil, release of gas and so on. Newer bentgrass cultivars that can handle a lot more shade, heat cold is the turf these courses should be moving towards.

The BEST way to improve the drainage is to first regrade the surface. Grading would be at a minimum of 2 to 3%. Minimum. Then, in low swales, run pipe and gravel in trenches to out laying low points. This accomplishes several improvements. 1. Drainage. 2. More interesting and fun, enjoyable playing surface with varying sloping lies. 3. More fun and challenge for golfers. 4. More beauty as surface is not flat, but appears like waves or dune like movements. 5. Create a variety of shots needed to play well.

That would remove all the grass which isn't the point work with what you have. If they have 5 inches of clay yes new drainage will help but verti-drain with is aeration up to 12 inches deep, you would do this several times a year and top dressing after wards, this way you get sand in the 5 inches of clay where water can drain faster and reach the rest of the sand much quicker. A lot of courses have clay for fairways and have perfect drainage because of this, just having proper drainage where you need it and proper maintenance through the years to so no standing water occurs. We can have several inches of rain one day and have carts back on the fairways in 24 to 48 hours.
Blair, y ou would be surprised how easy it is to solve problems without removing the entire fairway and grading it over. I'm a superintendent of a private course with a million dollar budget so I'm able to do everything I want if the board approves certain things. We have A4 bentgrass greens, zoysia fairways, bentgrass tees and a mix of bluegrass fescue in rough. I vertidrain the fairways twice a year and topdress 3 times a year for drainage since we can get hurricanes or thunderstorms with 6 to 12 inches of rain and thatch but we also verticut and aerate. The course is reaching 30 is years old so we do work on drainage and add drainage here and there when needed.
@@chosen1one930 ...there are various ways to skin a cat...your method is inferior, and more costly over the long run. Maintenance should be efficient, and proper. Any golf construction company would tell you, surface drainage should be a minimum of 2%..preferably 3 or 4 minimum. Any golf architect would ditto that, of which am i.
top video, what can you do when you have a high ph?
You can use elemental sulphur, or acidifying fertilizers such as ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, or urea. It will take time to lower pH when using fertilizers.

good job, what kind of liner you use for the bunker?
Hi Patrick, we purchase the filter cloth from our local irrigation supplier. We've used this for over 30 years and it works very well. It's very similar to a landscape fabric and costs approximately $300 per bunker.

4:19 Toro sidewinder. That was always my favorite mower to use. No emptying buckets with the rotary mower and striped awesome. Plus the joystick to slide the decks left or right was great. Bunker machine on the other hand… worst.

Noob question here. I do apologize, but I’ve been dying to level my lawn for a minute now. Should I just go sand off the get go or soil. I know what I’ve read but I want to hear it from a greens keepers perspective. (I’m in the Midwest and have Kentucky blue grass)
Hi Derek! Ideally if you could find a sandy soil would be best. You should be able to find it at a gravel mart or who ever sells landscape material in your area. They may call it #1 top soil. With sand in the soil, it will be easier for you to work it into your existing lawn and level it. As well this type of soil will hold moisture and nutrients, but still drain well. Best of luck.
