How Internal Biology Becomes External Behavior with Amy Zhao,, PhD
In this talk, Dr. Zhao explores the inner biological workings of the parrot reproductive and hormonal systems and discusses what they are, how they work, and how they cause the outward behaviors we view in our parrots. She also covers how these biological pathways inform our choices in caring for our parrots and how we can use this knowledge to solve health, wellness, and behavior problems in captivity and a home setting. IAABC CEUs approved.
Dr. Zhao is an animal scientist living in Boston with her small flock of budgies and Gandalf the cockatiel. She earned her B.S. in Animal Science from Cornell University in May 2014 and continued to earn her PhD in Animal Science specializing in animal physiology and molecular and cell biology from Cornell University in July 2019. During her time at Cornell, she has worked with and taken classes in management and husbandry for many animal species including sheep, cattle, horses, birds of prey, and of course, parrots. She also spent 8 years as a teaching assistant for courses including Domestic Animal Biology, Animal Nutrition, Domestic Animal Behavior, and Comparative Animal Anatomy and Physiology. Dr. Amy Zhao also completed Dr. Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course in 2022.

The Importance of Lab Work in Birds, What Does It All Mean? with Brynn McCleery, DVM, ABVP (Avian)
มุมมอง 1963 หลายเดือนก่อน
Dr. McCleery heads the avian and exotics service at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Red Bank, NJ. We all know that our birds deserve their own kind of doctor, a veterinarian that specializes in avian medicine. It’s so important that our birds see their doctor regularly, because as prey animals, they will not show us there is a problem until they are very ill or even terminal. And health is ...
Shaping Your Bird's Behavior with Wouter Stellaard, September 2024
มุมมอง 1534 หลายเดือนก่อน
Communicating with our birds requires us to be clear about what we are asking them to do and how we want them to behave. Most behaviors are not accomplished immediately, we need to break down a target behavior into smaller increments, it is a step-by-step process. Rewards along the way for each step help to build and strengthen the desired behavior. It’s always recommended that we teach our bir...

Naturalized Parrots: Is the Sky Really Falling? with Don Brightsmith, PhD on July 20, 2024
มุมมอง 2986 หลายเดือนก่อน
When enough parrots of the same species are introduced to each other in a non-native habitat, they will often breed and establish a new, stable population. These are referred to as naturalized parrots. Their populations can grow substantially, like the quakers or ringnecks across Europe, or the red-crowned Amazons in Texas and California. How does this affect the existing native plant and anima...

Sometimes accidents happen. What do we do if our birds fall, fly into a window, get stuck in something dangerous like chain or fabric, or skirmish with another animal? Maybe a bone breaks, a beak is severely damaged, or a toe is maimed. Dr. Carothers talks with us through these kinds of circumstances and what can happen during a trauma. And most importantly, she talks about what we should do to...

Does fruit cause fatty liver in birds
❤
Information on cage please :) where can I find one like that?
What a couple of cute boys, I've never seen one with white/yellow head, a hybrid perhaps?
Thanks so much for this info. My cats unfortunately played rather than killed a very fat healthy fledgling. I’m sure he was days from flying all the time. Poor thing sat in my driveway for hours because he couldn’t move it appeared. I did what I could for the wounds. It was a very alert but calm bird, maybe a mockingbird bird I’m pretty sure. I will visit my very busy Vet as she is a favorite in the county. ❤I will send you a bit of info if the little birdy makes it through the night. Again thanks for the great info. No other info is quite as detailed as yours. 😊
What a blessing this channel is. It's a such a shame you don't have more subscribers this information is so valuable ❤ thanks for everything. 🇦🇺
I live on a needs based income and I could not afford hundreds of dollars in bills and weeks of treatment
So far it’s not 100s of dollars. But we haven’t been to the vet yet, soon tho. And that will likely increase his overall expenses big time.
I had a male cockatiel that had a broken flight feather lodged in its stalk hole deep in the wing and he pecked at it with his beak no matter what I did until he died of a raging infection and only after he passed did I finally do the research that showed the mistakes I made. All need diet plastic water & food feeders metal toys very little time out of the cage because he was blind in one eye and less than partially in the other and I cried uncontrollably for 3 days. The big mistake I made was bonding to him to the point I depended on him for everything I wasn't getting from society and when he died I faced unimaginable loss
that slide fade transition is really distracting
Bless you for giving scooter a new home. As a parrot lover and adopter myself, I love to hear of these success stories. Phoenix Landing is a favorite charity of mine as they do such great work for the birds. I'll bet sometime down the road, Scooter will let you know it's okay to give scroothes !
Needs real destructible and foraging toys..
By enjoy you mean giving the pet human something to clean up?
Extremely informative TH-cam video, I have naw watched it twice. I am sure I will watch it again as it is so informative. I am in the UK and have always wanted a Parrot from a very young age, now at 51 , I have an African Grey , Melman , at 11 weeks. I have several bird tree stations in the house and the areas we are most in so Melman can be with us where ever we are. I have netted our porch, where we eat most evenings during the summer and it has full sun all afternoon long into the evening. All this was because of the knowledge I found in your video. The information about sexual paring is incredibly important and the need to treat our birds as a Fock (Family) member. Most people forget they are Avian ,not Mamal, as we are used to mamal pet mostly.
Thank you for training me to be a better human to my birds im gonna adopt!
I would love to! But i have 2 other parrots. The head is balls so he's not plucking
I have a 14 year old Sun Conure
Where do you live
This was a great class, thank you! It reminds me of why I love parrots so much... very much like having a forever toddler behavior without having human speech capability.
This is amazing! I have a ton of toy parts I haven't touched in a while and am so excited to dig those out and use some of these ideas!
Uhh lots of confliction on the bird cage liner. I heard people saying that pine shavings are okay if they are dust free and scentless, is that true? Also, I heard people saying that puppypads are worrying because they may have scents or chemicals that are bad for birds...
Also I remember hearing from one person that newspaper is technically bad because of the ink but I dunno
My blue & gold will walk across the RV to get to a bag of honey crisp apples & Zuchini
Are they equally as dusty as the Congo ones? Lol.
Excellent and useful content...
Great lecture! Thank you.
This was great. I’ve turned my fearful rescue gray into a confident foraging machine! Always having to add more layers now to slow her down.
This was great! I’ve turned my fearful gray rescue into a confident master forager. AlwAys having to add layers !!!
Can I use sand
sand is not recommended to be used as a bird cage lining. The primary reason is that it is very dangerous when ingested
@@Jazz-rc7qw ok bro thnx for the reply.
@@Jazz-rc7qw I just got sand and was looking for comments if it is indeed safe. Thank you.
I did dat
Can I use regular white copy paper
Are paper towels safe to use? Such as Bounty, and other top-selling products? Because we cancelled our newspaper subscription and we don't want to subscribe again.
That's what I use...
contact call = sounding as done in the wild
watching outdoor activaties
hands up
I just use lining paper. Can get a 20 metre roll for £3
That's a good idea. I'm about to get my first bird. Kraft paper seems to bit cheaper but lining paper is much thicker. Do you think it's good to use a thicker paper?
Am going to look into it
Very good information and thank Dr.
Thank you! This is the most thorough explanation by a avian doctor that I have ever seen on youtube. Next thing I'm looking for is a tutorial on avian fecal testing that can be done at home.
What would make my cockatoo picking sores and moles and she's had 5 eggs
One a month

this is such a great and helpful talk thank you very much!
👏👏
cockatoos are so crazy xD
Hes looking like 1 and a 2 and a got the exercise in
Excellent tutorial, nice job! Spraying the paper before changing---brilliant!
Hermoso😚
You do such great things for those birds! Do you use the stick for step up as a precaustion or are those guys not happy with being handled?
We encourage everyone to train birds to step onto a portable perch. Sometimes, with male cockatoos (which is everyone in this video), they are TOO happy about being handled. A pair bond with any bird is to be avoided, but can be dangerous with a male cockatoo. So, we want them to see us, and others, as flock members, but not mates.
Thank you for the information! I did not realize that about the cockatoos. My little conures are not aggressive, so I never really gave it much thought.
GOD BLESS YOU CARLY AND EVERY ONE OF YOU AT PHOENIX LANDING. I will now go and donate. THANK YOU so much for being so wonderful to these sweet creatures.
