‘Merica !!
When he opens the breech there's not a hint of powder smoke!
That has to be turret 1 or turret 2. I was center gun turret 3 and that gunner was not assigned to turret 3.
Freaking bad ass
That's big boom stick 👍
No ear protection?
Has them right on his head. Most of the noise it outside, though
Sailors have big barrels
The brass speaking-tube in the foreground--just for that steampunk touch!
This ship had the best chef in the fleet. Could take out a whole mercenary group with only a birthday cake girl as back up😂
Impressive
Y'know, Iowa class guns were accurate within about 100m from maximum firing range. Each Iowa class had nine of these guns. Each shell weighed over 2000 pounds. A full salvo of nine guns at max range could send a multi-millionaire's garage in mass of hate and discontent with a combined bore diameter of twelve feet, and would most certainly fuck your shit up. The shells would take 90 seconds to travel 24 miles. The guns could fire every thirty seconds. Every minute you could be hit with a quarter of a football field's length in lead and explosives weighing almost as many tons. And this is before you account for the retrofits to allow for use of Cruise Missiles on board the ship in their last years of active service.
This old'Lady can still lay down the hammer.
This guy in the video is in his 60s now.
You don’t really see or realize how big the breech of the 16” guns are until he steps down after firing to open the breech.

"Your hearing damage is not service related"
wow
i thought if you be somewhere near the shutter you would get a brain concussion or any other organ damage becouse of the pressure wave and the large amount of proppelant needed to fire such a large projectile. it seems i was wrong
Putting your ear pro on after the gun fires defeats the purpose.
Picture the crater where the enemy used to be, with a projectile going mach Fuk..
What a workout loading .
That is incredibly not violent compared to how it looks on the other end of the barrel .
Not a place to let your guard down!
I really wanted that job but navy said no so off to the army I went.
Thing of beauty.
Who is the kid behind that gun. I'd love to hear his story in that gun turret.
That's cool the gun is staying on target while the ship is going up and down. Even though it doesn't look that way.
I wonder how many sailors over the years tripped or just were standing too close and got body checked by the recoiling gun and sent flying. That must hurt bad.
Pounding Beruit?...I hope
That was USS New Jersey.
What is being said at 1:15 ?
He's not wearing hearing protection are you nuts
Interesting that the sailor pictured puts his ear muffs on for the loading process, but not the firing. The air purge and the machinery would undoubtedly be loud, but the firing is quiet enough to not warrant the ear protection?
Well done USA, that is one hell of a ship and weapon! 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
My grandfather severd on the missouri from 85 to 88.. GMCM Reed he was held from retirement to train the modern navy of the 80s how to use the guns.. he was active duty from 1953 to 1988..
Guess he doesn’t understand the function of those ear muffs…moron is gonna need hearing aids before he reaches 30. Hope he can read lips!
Ten years later when you can’t hear because you never wore your ear defenders 🤪💥💥💥💥💥💥
I served on carrier flight decks, but Battlewagons were impressive!
My grandfather was gunners mate on heavy cruiser USS Wichita. Was merchant marine gunner, prior to WW2. The Wichita started with convoy escorts in NA. Lead Operation Torch to Italy. Sank Vichey Bttlshp Jean Bart. Crossed Panama Canal, faught all the way up the Islands, even to AK . Her speed made her perfect for “magic carpet ride”.
Royal Prince gets around good work your majesty
Firepower for freedom.
Simply amazing!!! These behemoths of the sea should be brought back. They still have a place in modern warfare .
I love how you can see the effect the vibration has on the tape mechanism
1:04 why am i hearing shock diamonds? Is it to push exhaust gasses from combustion out the barrel? It sounds exactly like a methane blow down in the oil industry
Yes, they're blowing the remaining embers and smoke out with compressed nitrogen. If you watch one from outside, you'll see big puffs of smoke come out.
Like firing a Volkswagen at someone at 2700 fos
In every generation...its the kids who fight the wars.
On the 155 battery in an alternate dimension, “CHARGE 700!!”
I was in one of the 16-in turrets on New Jersey and damn if you didn't feel like nothing on Earth could touch you lol
And i always thougt that a breach from a M109 was big.
