I know that many churches teach that baptism is not necessary, and they are correct in their understanding when we look at the baptisms that they offer, of which is a false baptism. A true baptism is not an outward sign of an inward change, as that is not biblical. A true baptism is for the purpose of dying with Christ, as Jesus went into the grave, we also go under the water, and as he was raised from the dead, we are also raised as a new creation, no longer a slave to sin. Yes, Paul said to believe, but to believe also means to obey and includes baptism. Even Mark spoke of this in Mark 16:16-17 when Jesus said, He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned; (Of course if one does not believe, he will not be baptized.) Paul also wrote Romans chapter 6 where he explains what happens in water baptism. You see, a true baptism is for the remission of sins, and every time in the scriptures where we see "the remission of sins", baptism is the means. Baptism is always demonstrated in the scriptures through submersion in water. In the early churches of the first 3 centuries and later, water baptism was the way to be converted into Christ. The teaching that water baptism not being necessary began with the Gnostics in the late second century, and is written about by several of the early church leaders as a heretical doctrine. Here a re just a few of their quotes: “He that does these things shall be like a tree that is planted by the waters of a river that will bring forth its fruit in due season.
