Chamber and orchestral music of Larry Hoffman
Winter : Music for Orchestra
This is where my imagination took me during some very cold days and. nights. I have a constantly developing relationship with dissonance..
The beginning sounded to me like an orchestra tuning up. ... I hope you like it.

New work! A special one Für Johannes Brahms : Eine Lampe Im Inneren : A Lamp Within Those of you who know me musically will not be surprised to learn that I left my jazz lessons with the great Dennis Sandole (who famously taught jazz icon John Coltrane and many others) when I heard Johannes Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. I remember writing my brother that “I finally heard music with a capital ‘ M.’ ”...

!!HAPPY NEW YEAR !! MANY THANKS FOR LISTENING TO AND COMMENTING ON MY MUSIC IN 2024! !! with special thanks to new subscribers !! I started the new year with the following challenge: Could I create an entire work based on one statement? Summoning my contrapuntal skills (such as they are), I proceeded … shielding myself from unwanted dissonances whilst carefully creating lanes of easy access- al...

This work was challenging to me. I needed to come to new terms with dissonance as well as with the successful meeting of these two families :) I wish all a happy new year and thank you for listening ! Leave a comment! Subscribe if you haven't as yet done so!

Working with these instruments is always a joy. The blends and contrasting voices seem to come together as if magnetically charged; I have only to guard for hurtful collisions. If I were a chef I would have to call this a confection waiting to happen. I step aside and enjoy it- watchfully.

I love this piece Larry! The main motif is burned into my brain now.
Thanks, Greg! So good to hear from you!
Nice. Very well done.
Wonderful, Larry. It's regrettable that there weren't enough hours in the day to continue your jazz lessons, given who was giving them - but such is life! You've achieved great things with your chosen path and here's the latest one. Many thanks!
Thanks so much , Keith. There were other considerations: as with blues the color and music of the new jazz "heroes" was rapidly changing to fusion/jazz-rock, or however you name it. IMO it was bastardizing the music,,,or should I say changing it forever. I felt like I was in a burning building. But it was Brahms IV that sealed the deal.
@@larryhoffmanmusic9285 Oh, I completely understand THAT. I liked Weather Report with Jaco, and Jaco without Weather Report. End of :-)
This rocks, Larry! Thanks for sharing all of your work, best wishes and happy new year🎉
That means a lot coming from you, Pat! Thanks... best wishes for a great year.
Fine indeed, Larry. Many thanks! Best wishes for 2025
Same to you, Keith. I always read your comments... and respect them, my friend!
That's really cool ! This is Sibelius or an other software ?
Thanks! Glad you like it I use the latest Sibelius Ultimate w/ Note Performer4. (latest)
This composition is absolutely magnificent, melodic, superbly written, orchestrated and performed !
Thank you so much!!
Larry-- Your compositions just keep getting better and better! The music is so beautiful and relaxing. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks,Larry.I keep working at it :) Always good to hear from you.
Another triumph, Mr H. Well done!
As always, Mr.R. thank you!!
It's an intriguing introduction. And I don't know where it's going after that...just that it's someplace related but new.
Quite superb, Larry. I understand your description - spot on! And not only superfine music, it's a great sound. If you get THAT wrong, everyone misses the point. You got it right.
Thank you Keith;,so glad to know someone hears me!
Another brilliant work, Mr H! Many thanks for it
Thanks for this comment, and especially for listening! much appreciated!
Superb voicings, dynamics, balance and blend, Larry. What's not to like? :-)
Thanks so much, Keith!
Superb voicings. balance, dynamics, blend and flow. What's not to like, as they say? :-)
Love it! Linda
thanks so much, Linda--keep listening!
I love this one Larry! I can't hear "Friday the 13th" without thinking of "Born Under A Bad Sign"
Thanks, Greg--that's an awesome thought!
Larry, do you sleep?! You've done it again...in the middle of a move too! This is a really great piece.
thanks so much, Greg.Actually, "Friday the 13th" was literally in the middle of my move--"Streets" was written in the fog -aftermath of the move==only a few blocks away, i feel like I am on another planet.....
I love it !! I'm also composing and it's really not interesting to see your work
Very cool ! have you studied counterpoint ? you seem to like it
Of course I've studied counterpoint...it was a wonderful aspect of achieving my Masters degree in composition and theory from the Peabody Conservatory... as well as my tenure as faculty there.
Very nice harmonies and counterpoint 👏🏼
Thank you! Keep listening ;)
Larry, this is a powerfully exquisite piece. I love the descending prayer motif that keeps passing amongst all of the instruments, sort of like using prayer beads (Rosaries, Malas, etc.). The instrumentation works so well in this piece. This wind/string selection just works! I can't wait to hear this performed by real instruments!
I very much miss your generous and insightful comments, Greg. Thank you.One day we will be sitting in the same room listening together....
What is larry's plan for making a living out of his music?
my plan is not to monetize my composing ..... I love teaching, and that has supported me for many years... In addition I have augmented my income by writing about music and producing records.
@@larryhoffmanmusic9285 sounds cool
Brilliant music, Larry. I really enjoyed following the score while listening to it for the first time. Helped me “grasp” what you were doing and hear it more clearly. Congratulations - a real achievement. Keep up the good work.
thanks so much! I appreciate your excellent comments... keep listening !
I had no idea that was you, Ann! I am triply blessed, and humbled. So glad you liked it !!
Somehow being able to read the score while listening to your new music just made what you were creating - and what I was hearing more accessible….
As one of so many who have admired your many works over the years, it is quite thrilling to read your response to my music, Thank you, Ann!@@annCHARTERS-d3u
Good job, FYI double basses can go below the E-natural
Thanks! and of course it can...all the books mark the C below as the bottom.
Good for you!
Thanks for subscribing !!
I just grew up hearing that version on the Smithsonian record. No offense meant
none taken,,, I'm assuming you mean the original version by MS John Hurt, right?-- what Smithsonian record? I heard it on his Piedmont recording circa 1962 or 3
It sounds better when adding the 2nd verse: Go to the fashion shop, pick the one that looks best, your own sweet momma owns a brand new dress…
I wanted it to be as clean and simple as possible... a tribute to John, whom I knew and played for.....
Excellent piece from start to finish….a window into a beautiful mind. Impressed but not surprised coming from you Larry. Complex with interesting melodic parts and ambient tones, making for a pleasant listening experience!
Thank you for your kind words and .. moreso-- for your careful listening!
I like where it begins to churn and shift mood around 4:23, and love that BIG chord at 7:20!. Overall, I its LUSH and colorful work! Really looking forward to diving in with a second listen. Congrats Larry!
thanks, Jeremy! I know how careful you are when you listen.
Thank you, Larry. It is lovely!
Thank you, Larry!😊
thank you so much !
Perfect title! Love the woodwinds in this piece... Blustery , then wispy and calm, and then again, ....i think you captured the wind.
thanks for the thoughtful comment, JS
Nice!
Larry! Thanks so much for sending your latest work my way. I'll never forget hearing your Quartet work live, quite a few years ago. So amazing to see these works evolve. No 10 is the best one yet! I m looking forward to my second listen.
Beautiful work, Larry. Thank you for letting me hear it - a privilege. Your new music is truly uplifting on this snowy winter morning.
My privilege, Annie, --is to know you've listened! Glad I could prove a respite from the cold :)
Incredible work
thank you ! keep working
Sounds great!
Thanks, Jacob. I love that song/poem. Here's a nugget: Bob Dylan (who wrote the song but didn't record it 'til later, said the best cover of this or any other of his songs was Elvis' version :)
Very enjoyable! Nice writing.
thank you, Edward
Larry! this is awesome!
thanks, Jeremy
I really like this! Thanks!🙌
I love the standard nonet instrumentation…maybe its because I’m a double bassist and love seeing more chamber opportunities for bass! Larry, I’m writing my comments in real time, almost as stream of consciousness…I love the flute and violin fluttering that emerges from the lush opening textures! This is one of the most richly sonorous pieces I’ve heard in a while. I love the col legno (or is it Bartok pizz) around bar 27 or so. I love the section around 37ish with the rich rising passages and the way it transitions into the next bit. There are so many great motifs (riffs even?) that get passed around. Oooh I love the section around 90 (sorry, the score is slightly blurry and I can’t read the measure numbers easily) with the descending 16ths groupings that starts with bass! The section around 126(136?) where everything “slows” into whole notes and tied whole notes! This is gorgeously rich. I love he build up to 182? And then…there’s those really pronounced accented punctuations before the 16th note interjections that lead back to those gorgeously lush chords. The beautiful unison statement just before the final fluttering fadeout is wonderful. Larry, you’ve done it again! This piece is a winner and I am confident that this will get programmed somewhere. Bravo!
I can't thank you enough, Greg. Only a good musician can hear the things that you hear.... so... .we have the CB part nailed...... so get busy :)
@@larryhoffmanmusic9285 Larry, it really is an incredible piece. I can't wait to hear it played by non-virtual instruments!
This piece is so rich. The timbres work very well together. I love the staccato against legato sections between the two voices. The unison bits are really effective too. I love the section at 115. Much more to say...
Thanks for the careful listening and kind words!
Beautifully Bluesy…
Thanks, Lea! i might have called it that had i thought about it !
Excellent!
I didn't expect the grand tension that opens the piece, recalling liturgical music and the grand sweeping heartbeats of hope signified by the wind and brass elements. The numerous juxtapositions of tension and relief bring the listener ever higher into the sonic world you have created. I hear "high church" and I also hear the thread-building work of a primarily film composer like Bernard Herrmann. I wish my symphonic vocabulary were up to the task of expressing both terror and ultimate delight in this complex work. It requires repeat listening from me. Bravo, Maestro.
Thank you so much, Michael. Brilliant metaphors ..
Larry, you've done it again! What an incredible work! I love the ominous opening to this work, and the driving rhythms with the percussion around 2:50 (and elsewhere) is really powerful. The pitched mallet percussion parts are almost unrelenting, giving a driving sense of urgency. I love the section around the 13 minute mark, where notes of hope start bursting forth...then the relentless driving rhythms return. I also love the juxtapositions of light and hope in the upper winds with the tension in the strings and mallet percussion. Then as we get to to the 2/3rds mark, the hopeful brass declamations start bursting through, repeating the motive from the beginning of the work. This hopefulness builds. The repeated brass declamations are like a mantra....or ritualistically praying the Rosary or using Tibetan prayer beads...this builds and gets picked up by other instruments. Finally all of the prayerful repetitions pay off in the way Leonard Cohen sang "There is a crack in everything...That's how the light gets in." The prayers (slow at first) find their way through cracks in the "dark, abstract space...of confusion and subterfuge" and eventually the light shatters the darkness. Incredible work Larry!
Thanks so much, Greg! It is wonderful to have sensitive , erudite musicians like yourself listening to and appreciating my music.
