I just passed meps in early enlistment. I ship out for basic June 30th I volunteered for machinist mate submarine
If you did good on the asvab hopefully your a torpedoman, if you didn’t I’m sorry to say your a A ganger
Great video. I served on SSBN640 USS Benjamin Franklin in the 80s and my son is heading off to boot camp then sub school Jan2025. I sent him your video.
Im moving soon to Groton! You mentioned barracks are shared, question is, is it one shared living space or individual rooms with a shared restroom and kitchen?
Depends on the barracks; if it's subschool, it's shared living space. Most "boaters" (sailors assigned to submarines and not subschoolers) have their own room and shared kitchen from what I've seen
Did it in '67... Congratulations on your moving thru the ranks.
Thank you for the video. Our son just graduated bootcamp and awaiting going to Groton. BESS first then IT-S. Very impressive. Also love the soundtrack .
Good video - I was homeported there for 5 patrols on the 657. We had a reunion there a few years back and got to tour the new stuff and even a tour of the USS Providence. Interestingly, I never went to Sub School because when I arrived from Missile Tech C School I was immediately assigned to the 657. Thanks for the memories!
Thank you for your service 🙏🏾💖
Nice look in ..thanks for sharing. Salute to our military 💖Silent Service 💖
Just came from Groton after graduating BESS and A school it was quite the experience and I’d like to come back to be an instructor myself someday HOOYAH A-Gang!!!
Graduated in early 1996 from BESS and my A schools. It was alot different then. Great video!
Great memories brothers
Sweet jesus that flooding trainer water was ice cold.
A nice walk down memory lane. I was very young swimming at Rock Lake. Mid 60s. I'm a proud navy brat a patriot and now I'm a Republican Thank You
Thank you for making this video. I spent 4 years in Groton and this video was a reminder of how great it was.
Thanks for the great video, brought back lots of memories. BESS and torpedoman C school 1999.
Graduated Sub School and A Gang A school in 2005.. video was so cool. Turned 21 in Groton. Good times. I just went back up to Bangor for the first time in 16 years. Went to the Naval Undersea Museum. Met a volunteer who served on the USS Nautilus. Your video hit all the spots. ALL the nostalgia brother. Thanks for posting this!
I was in A school here in 05
My favorite thing about base was that there was more than one path to get across base with all the side routes
SSBN631 Gold. Nice video.
I was surface for 8 years (DC2) and I dread the thought of going subs but I've sailed with those that couldn't wait to get back. I loved this video and loved the memories that came back from your narration. From "A" school in Great Lakes to the 2 commands in Norfolk. Subs, Surface, Air.... we all have our preferances but at the end we're not that different when it comes to the camaraderie and memories that we all made. It's a part of my life that I never regret, never wish I did differently, and even find myself day dreaming about from time to time. Thank you shipmate for sharing.
in 84 they were tearing down the old barracks!
We were still in those barracks in 1996!🤣
Yeah after Groton, back in '79, some of the amenities were there, but most were not. I remember the NEX, pool, and theater. I went to Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, Va. for "A" and "C" school. Went back after seven patrols [SSBN 659G] as a Nav/ET Instructor. Go Navy!
This is an amazing video that I've wanted to see for several years. I regret not taking a better record of my time there, and this video is as close as I'll likely ever get to visiting behind the gates. I spent a good amount of free time walking the trails and at the pub. Those staircases from the Nex were a favorite. I also participated in the Silver Dolphins, which provided a good amount of extracurricular activity. I was in just before the new uniforms were issued (in fact, a handful of sailors on base wore them while they were still being tested), and long before any talk of female submariners.
most of the amenities weren’t there in 1980 when I attended Sub school…completely foreign to me
Basic and HM A school at San Diego / Balboa. C school at Pensacola.. then sent to NavHosp Philly to tread water until they sent me to NAS Willow Grove ( the ONLY ) regular on the largest, at the time, reserve base in the Finally, the call from my detailer - 1st choice, a frigate out of.. stopped him right there. Choice 2 - the Vincennes out of Norfolk. Thought about it and asked, "What's #3.? .. the Ohio! Thought how cool, get to go to sub school... Nope! report right aboard as ship's company. Tried to talk him into sending me to the school. Nope!.. so, aerospace / aviation medical corpsman reporting on a sub. Go Navy, Go Figure!
1983 I enlisted in the Navy went to Damn Neck , Virginia for “A” school as an Operation Specialist “Radar Operator”. Landed on the USS CAPODANNO FF-1093. Thanks for the memories. Oh yea I’m a 36 year Design Tech at Electric Boat, down the river from the Base. Thanks for the video, and thank you very much for your service.
This is not the Groton Subase that I attended in 1960. We did not have all the recreation stuff shown here. The only thing I saw that I recognized was the Jap sub. The buildings have all been changed. We had barracks to live in not rooms. Time has sure changed even the Chief's club disappeared the last time I visited, and the EM club probably is gone also. The escape training tower is probably gone as well. There was one here at Groton and one in Pearl Harbor. Thanks for the fly-by though. I retired from submarines having served on four polaris and three diesel boats. I also served in a Fleet Air Support squadron and a Heavy attack squadron. I toured the Med three times below the surface and a nine-month cruise on the surface on the heavy attack carrier Independence.
It wasn't until the end did I realize that the creator of this video is from the same SECF class as me going through sub school. Same rate, and we both ended up in Kings Bay. While this guy is very humble, he was the most jacked Korean I've ever seen. He comes from a family of extreme intelligence, a father who put Samsung on the map in the U.S. and worked with the inventor of Blu-ray. No coincidence he went from Jr. Enlisted to Warrant Officer! Stay strong Dokyun, and RIP John Davey.
6:47b they get a suit wow all we got was a helmet lol and said ho ho ho all the way up and yea 2 per room lol Nott ok i was there in 1975 but nice to see the old place Go 645 blue class
You guys live in Heven in summer of 1961 there was like 50 men to a big room.Must say that nithing you showed was there then :(
I loved this video. As a young man I thought of joining the Navy to be a submariner. That's the place where I would have gone to. When I thought about it and realized you gents might go 3 months without seeing the sun, I came to my senses. Not everyone can be a submariner. Regardless of rank, you all have my deepest admiration and gratitude. Freedom is not free!
was here back in 2018, crazy to see how fast time flies by
Vert well done, Not a Navy vet but it was interesting.
Thanks for sharing. Retired USAF here and I've always had a big fascination with everything naval.
Submariners deserve the best commodities
Great video! How in the world did you shoot trainer video?! Lots of new buildings since 1978 when i attended BESS. Still a beautiful (nature wise) base.
Great video ! Thank you for serving.
I just stumbled upon this video. I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks.
Do they have 50ft or 100ft water filled excape towers? My dad was sent here for sub training with excape hatches while in UDT under water demolition teams. Right after UDT finished Advanced Marine Gorilla Warfare Training in Georgia.
Kill the music
Beautiful video lots of memories well done
I got to Sub School the day after Thanksgiving 1964. None of these fancy schools and such or berthing. We lived in barracks, ate at a chow hall that is now gone and hung out at Dealy hall. We rode a Diesel sub for part of our training.Sub School started Jan 2, 1965.. My class started with 40 people but graduated 14 on Feb, 25, 1965.
Great memories. I was stationed at NSSF from 1982 to 1985.
I went to Sub School from June through August of 64. They taught 585 (Skipjack) class. We did escape tank, buoyant ascent training. I was assigned to Carbonero SS-337 in PH.
@@atassaro I was taught Skipjack also, Jan-Feb '65. Went to new construction at EB and comm'd Flasher SSN 613. We went to Pearl and use to see the "Carbon Burner" light off many times! I finally got to ride a Diesel in '69. Cusk SS 348 at Ballast Point just before her decomm.
To begin with, thank you for your service. If a person is going to be a cook duse he has to go to sub. school?
Yes, "Culinary Specialists" serving on subs go through BESS.
@@n0tawhale902 Thanks for the info.
No sub for me. Too crowded.
You can sleep in the torpedo tubes if you need privacy. They’ll even close the breech door if it gets too noisy for you.
I was not in subs, aviation enlisted. Navy method, first in processing barracks then move to main barracks. I went to A school in Memphis NATTC.
Went through Seco in the fall of 1964 proud of that six months of radio a school in San Diego sub school in the fall of 64 assigned to SBN 618 USS Thomas Jefferson Gold crew. The base now does not even remotely resemble the base then.
I forgot to mention I served aboard the USS Archerfich SS-311, USS Sea Cat SS-399, Uss Odax SS-484 after having served aboard Patrol craft,Destroyers, USNS Carrier Cape Esperance T-CVU 88, Cruisers USS Helena & USS Saint Paul, and also Fast Patrol Boats PTF-19. I put 18 years in the Navy and an additional 14 years in the Army Ntional Guard as an MP. Reiired as E--7 and enjoyed every minute.
Thank you for the tour, it has changed drastically sinci I was there in 1959 but I still maintain a relationship with my fellow submariners in the USSVI Illinois Base serving Northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, I was priviliged to have the opportunity to start this base in Beloit,Wisconsin 7 years ago and have served as Base Commander and also as District Commander for awhile and still attend meetings. Once a submariner always a submariner!
@@phillipowens1493 I was a plankowner for USSVI Seattle Base. I ended up doing three terms as Base Commander over the years. Submarines Once...
Nicely done video. Thank you for sharing. I was there Feb 63-Apr 63. The only things I remember as before were the theatre, the exterior displays of the mini sub and torpedo. I served on the USS Entemedor SS340, New London and the USS Plunger SSN 595, Hawaii as an MM2SS. I did a tour of the Nautilus while she was operating out of New London. I would love to do a tour of the Nautilus now as both the Entemedor and Plunger have been scrapped. Again, Thank you.
