if you love birds, chances are you love the natural world in which they live. For many of us, that creates a moral dilemma: how big a "footprint" are we willing to make in our quest for the next checkmark on our list? In 2022, Brett Forsyth set out to see how many birds he could find using only self-powered travel. Join us as Brett shares some of his stories and reflections on his Big Green Bir...

    Thanks for an informative video! Could you specify the gulls in Latin names? We call these ones Larus Argentatus or "Gråmåke" in Norway. They are the only ones staying all year. I have a regular visitor and he brought his family to the buffet!: th-cam.com/video/-vuil8MgkNk/w-d-xo.html

    It's an alright intro, however those are abundant. It gets unrecognized, that birders are often quite loyal to the hobby for a very long time. They read the basic literature a long time ago , and sometimes find it left them unconvinced , as to the IDs . What is most needed is actually disambiguation about the less common or more challenging presentations. For instance, in Florida we have red tails which don't really present much patagial marking. Sharpies don't always show a straight tail termination, and broadwings can look a lot like red-shouldered juveniles. Perched and in flight, flight feather lengths vary , some birds are just disproportionate for the species. It's therefore the difficult discernment which can use airtime , and not really the basic stuff ... imo.

    "Rare gulls are rare..." so true, but when you do actually come across one of those special uncommon-to-rare-to-mega rare Larus gulls... that feeling is what it's all about!

    Superb review of Ontario raptors in flight. I really appreciated how the terms wing length and tail length are defined- not as absolutes but as ratios to wing breadth.

    A shorebird is any bird that is included within the order Charadriiformes, whilst shorebirds belonging to the families Turnicidae (Buttonquails), Pedionomidae (Plains Wanderer), Thinocoridae (Seedsnipes), Rostratulidae (Painted Snipes), Jacanidae (Jacanas), Scolopacidae (Snipes, Curlews, Sandpipers, Godwits, Woodcocks, Dowitchers, Phalaropes, Shanks, Tattlers, Turnstones, Knots, Stints, Dunlin, Ruff, and Surfbird), Charadriidae (Plovers and Lapwings), Pluvianellidae (Magellanic Plover), Recurvirostridae (Avocets and Stilts), Ibidorhynchidae (Ibisbill), Haematopodidae (Oystercatchers), Burhinidae (Stone Curlews), Chionidae (Sheathbills), Glareolidae (Pratincoles and Coursers), Dromadidae (Crab Plover), and Pluvianidae (Crocodile Bird) are specifically called waders, additionally, shorebirds that are called waders are a paraphyletic group because the families Burhinidae, Chionidae, Glareolidae, Dromadidae, and Pluvianidae are more closely related to the shorebird families Laridae (Gulls), Stercorariidae (Skuas), Sternidae (Terns, Noddies, and Skimmers), and Fraterculidae (Puffins, Razorbill, Auks, Auklets, Guillemots, Murres, and Murrelets) than they are to other shorebird families with species called waders.

      bro im 26 minutes in and still learning... if you really have such little patience, unable to endure an introduction, perhaps gull identification is not your cup of tea.

      @gorgeviews7858 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kyleallen6680 Sure I learned some things.... like I'm much better at determining the age of a gull after watching this but very little was gained that helps me identify different species. Perhaps it isn't my cup of tea but it would seem the community that does ID them doesn't want to share the tea. It's OK. I'll eventually do my own video, in the mean time I have 100s of photos that have captured between 1 and 2 dozen species would you like to ID them for me?
