It's Standard foundations, not Modern. Shocks are too strong for a 5-year Standard set. It's not like they didn't put special lands. Sorry but I think your take is bad.

This is a misleading short, the difference is that you now have the option to spread damage among blockers without having to assign lethal damage to the first in blocking order as far as I understand it.

when assigning damage correct, but you can still cast instants before. With single blocks, almost nothing changes

Ok so really when blocking, you cant cast spells after the damage assignment step, wich means you can still block and then use a protection/buff spell, however when blocking a 6/6 with a 3/3 and a 4/4, you can't vast a spell after 3 damage is assigned to the 3/3 and then 3 damage is assigned to the 4/4. And also when assigning combat damage, you dont have to assign lethal damage to one creature, then be allowed to deal damage to another, making pyroclasm effects better
