Definitely great point about making it look good for the neighbors. also entices the neighbors to start their own little garden patch, and i always give plants to the neighbors, they always say yes to free plants

Excellent seminar, I wrote down many notes! Too bad you were rushed at the end. FYI at 55:03 you have a layout overview an I noticed you have Foxglove in the yard. Digitalis/Foxglove is not native to the US.

OK, I am going to address the elephant in the room: I knew Harrison Ford was into flying but I did not know he also was into native plant gardening. I wish you had not dubbed the voice, though.

Check out both - Doug Tallamy and Philip Wollen. According to the UN Report on Global Warming, the livestock industry uses more energy (petro chemicals) than all the transportation put together. We are doomed, yes, because we killed off the insects by removing native plants and with insecticides, and with our other bad habits also. To save species, including humans, we need to realize one can live great on a vegan diet - better - and stop killing the planet with livestock production. IT STARTS WITH EACH OF US - that is the only way it can. Govt is in bed with industries that kill. I am doing all I can to stop invasive plants, plant natives, and eat no animal products. I also try to be a conscientious consumer plus respectfully share these facts I have learned. This chapter has great video, thanks - lots of excellent information.

Oh man I feel your pain with tilling. Dealing with the same issue.

I signed up for the HNP program. I'm being overrun with invasive bamboo and privet, and could use any help I could get because there's only one of me and many of them! With 15 acres already in a "natural" state, I'm sure those acres could use some help with introducing understory trees, sedges, and the like. The front 5 acres are where I'm losing the fight and there are zero resources in my area.

Power lines clearings in northville provides wonderful environment for native wildflowers. Joe pie weed was everywhere. The trail is off of Hagerty road called 7mile Park trailhead. Lots of cool native plants.

Good presentation. Your plants are probably just getting a lot of nitrogen and growing vigorously because of the catalpa tree being a Legume. The mulch would probably be like a 1/1/1 fert and slow. Mulch holds moisture and the microbes probably thrived and helped nitrogen fixation of your catalpa. Just a guess.

Ideally we want to plant for both today and 50 years from today. I'am reluctant to believe that ALL native species will be able to thrive in our region 50 years from now. I would cite sugar maple as an example. Obviously, we still have more to learn about species selection, and of course promoting biodiversity is paramount.

My groundcover (NC) is uva ursi (bearberries) in my permaculture yard. I can use it for tea that is good for my kidneys. Great presentation - Thanks.

Great video! I live in Grand Haven and to be honest, I find the actions by local government about trees to be disappointing (somewhat like the keystone cops). Fortunately we have some incredible volunteers, like Adopt A Hemlock, who are working to protect Duncan's Woods. Otherwise, our situation would be a total disaster waiting to happen. Just sayin.

Rudbeckia reseeds vociferously here. Plant one and in 3 years you will have a yard full. (SWOhio). Funny how they behave differently in different areas.
