Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 19: Tippling Wine on the Trail
Buoncenvento to San Quirico d’Orcia (1 day; 22.1 km)
Our best day yet! This sublime stretch of classic Tuscan countryside leads us into fields of Sangiovese Grosso grapes, the source of Brunello di Montalcino wine-among the world’s finest vintages. It is an adventure of eyeing, fondling and sampling the fruit, savouring the wine at a vineyard along the way and, with a spectacular day-end dinner, indulging in a bottle.

Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 18: Bicycle Wheels and Muddy Fields
มุมมอง 7114 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Siena to Buonconvento (1day; 33.0 km) A long trek on a sunny Tuscan day with remnants from recent rains. At times, we share the way with participants of L’Eroica, an annual non-competitive cycling event (so “race” is a misnomer!), where riders on vintage bikes sport old-timey garb.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 17: As Seen in Siena
มุมมอง 6119 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
An independent republic that rivaled Florence in the 12th to mid-14th centuries, Siena had enormous wealth still evident in its city layout and structures. With just a day to enjoy it all, we sample some of Siena’s highlights.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 16: Washed Away (Wettest Day Yet!)
มุมมอง 111วันที่ผ่านมา
Monteriggioni to Siena (1 day; 20.1 km) Probably a lovely stretch of Tuscany is lost to us, obscured by heavy rains that also have us looking down, to manoeuvre over streaming, muddy paths. Thankfully, our destination, Siena, will be a “zero day, “ a day of rest and touring, tomorrow.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 15: Crystals and Castles
มุมมอง 12714 วันที่ผ่านมา
San Gimignano to Monteriggioni (1 day; 30.6 km) It’s a day of time travel. We begin at one showy fortified town and set off to a castle community, with other castles along the way, including at the town of Colle Val d’Elsa, a centre of crystal manufacturing since the 1300s.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 14: To the Towers of San Gimignano

Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano (1 day; 13.9 km) A fan favourite with its multiple medieval towers (each evidencing the wealth of a local family-truly conspicuous wealth!), San Gimignano for us is limited to a partial day of touring and a sleepover. The trek there includes ecclesiastical sites of interest and more gorgeous Tuscan scenery. The town provides aristocratic atmosphere and sumptuous ...
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 13: Monday Night in Tuscany (Will We Eat?)
มุมมอง 11221 วันที่ผ่านมา
San Miniato to Gambassi Terme (1 day; 25.1 km) The expansive, rolling farmscape of today’s walk is remote. It’s a Monday when services are less likely to be available than usual. Will there be food for us at the end of the trail?
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 12: Want to go to San Miniato?
มุมมอง 13321 วันที่ผ่านมา
Altopascio to San Miniato (1 day; 30.0 km) Across hours of forests and fields and valley vineyards, we track the distant tower that marks our hilltop town destination. We reach delightful, medieval San Miniato for a far too short overnight stay.

Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 11: Likin’ Lucca (a lot) How lucky to have a tour day in Lucca. This vlog includes some top Luccan sites but is our own idiosyncratic take on 24 hours there.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 10: Pounding the Pavement to Altopascio
มุมมอง 116หลายเดือนก่อน
Lucca to Altopascio (1 day; 22.0 km) Today, we take concrete steps towards reaching Rome…pounding the pavement through urban space. Linking this metropolitan milage is, of course, the Via Francigena and a series of churches of different eras and styles. Tomorrow…a “zero day” back in Lucca.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 09: Collecting Stamps on the Way to Lucca
มุมมอง 122หลายเดือนก่อน
Camaiore to Lucca (1 day; 25.2 km) We walk highways and byways from Camaiore to Lucca on a long, humid and overcast day. What you see is a collection of stamps that will prove to the Vatican that we completed the walk from Canterbury to Rome (once we’ve done that!). What you don’t see is a route too treacherous to record.

Via Francigena: Massa-Camaiore (1 day, 26.8 km) Today’s trek encounters varied sites. Once we reach our new home base, in Lucca, David offers yet more steps: how to make butter-sage pasta sauce. This is our dinner and fuel for walking.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 07: Marble Trails
มุมมอง 171หลายเดือนก่อน
Sarzana to Massa (1 day; 33.4 km) On this walk, stony castles give way to quarries that have gifted the world with Carrara marble. We visit the once prosperous Roman city of Luna, now an architectural site-its reason for being, the marble it exported through the nearby Mediterranean Sea. Onward to today’s marble factories and transporting facilities. Past and present merge.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 06: The Hardest 20 KM Walk Ever!
มุมมอง 199หลายเดือนก่อน
Aulla to Sarzana (1 day, 19.6 km) A mere 20 km trek turns hellish in fog and rain. Medieval hill towns pop out of the mist then disappear again, obscured in grey. After the slippery wet of the day, we are relieved to make our destination. Join us at our bed-in (roll over John and Yoko) as we discuss today’s experiences.
Walking to Rome on the Via Francigena 05: Florence? Firenze? In two days?
มุมมอง 256หลายเดือนก่อน
I call it “Florence.” David calls it “Firenze.” But don’t call the whole thing off! This world centre of art, architecture and cuisine challenges us to maximize our weekend. See views from the cathedral tower, its dome and a “suburban” lookout park. Savour a sandwich of lampredotta (the fourth stomach of a cow!) and bistecca alla fiorentina (a very large, thick and rare steak specialty). Hear G...

So much cheaper than buying a ticket.
as autumn fog lifts / a vineyard in the sunshine / Italian wine 🍷
In San Quirico try a restaurant named IL Forno Vecchio. Great dining
A beautiful walk, some excellent scenery and a bottle of red to end the day, fantastic
I’ve had one of those rooms they are spacious they do rattle a lot I bring cardboard shims to Hush the rattles
The bus tour of Winnipeg during the midpoint layover from Toronto to Vancouver is worth the cost and it is planned to get you back to the station in plenty of time.
Also, did you ever post a video on how to spend time during the Canadian's stop in Winnipeg? I can't find it. I will be traveling west from Toronto. I think I will have about 2 hours, beginning at (potentially) 7:30 pm.
Hi. Thanks for the helpful and interesting video. I am taking the Canadian in December 2024 and have seen other videos here that show an overhead storage area in the single cabins that look like they could hold a carry-on size suitcase. Do you agree? Sure would be nice if the cars had a standard luggage rack like Amtrak sleeper cars do!
I'm sorry you didn't have more of a chance to explore Buonconvento. It's a very lovely village
A dry days walking always a bonus some lovely footage again
Absolutely stunning level of detail in the art and architecture. Simply (complexly😉) beautiful.
Very interesting. Nice to understand the origin of the term Burnt Sienna.
Gale, what kind of hat do you have. My wife want's one!
Some stunning architecture and sunshine for our pilgrims
Thank you for your video, new subscribers! What type of shoes do you recommend for doing this type of walk now that you have experienced it?...we plan on doing Lucca to Rome next late May to June.
Your cautionary introduction adumbrated the deluge about to inundate this region of Italy. Congratulations on your puddle-jumping perambulations ☔ The rain enhanced the lush green fields. I loved the stillness of sheep during the downpour. The canal obelisk seemed to be covered in lichen, which, I imagine, has witnessed many Francigena pilgrims. Catherine of Siena, being a patron Saint of communication professions, was, I trust, blessing two wet, weary TH-camrs 🙏
That looked a somewhat challenging walk but I find the sound and smell of the rain often enhances the experience
So nice to see you galloping across the rivers Gail 😂 another lovely days walking
Thanks. Glad you avoided a major rainstorm. So nice to see you enjoyed the architecture, culture, wine and cuisine of Monteriggioni area. Take care dear pilgrims 🙏
It was a pleasure walking with you
good info but too much talking!
Loved the bunches of grapes. Nice to see to hikers / pilgrims with a dog. Monks' chant emanating from sacred stone structure was lovely. Nocturnal illumination enhanced stonework in San Gimignano. You certainly ate and drank well in San Germignano 🍷 🍦
I’m planning this same walk next March so loving your channel. Thank you.
My husband and I are planning a trip on the Canadian in March and we’re super excited! We managed to book one of the Prestige cabins in the Park Car, which is our first time traveling on the Canadian, so we want to make the most of it. Your tips and advice are amazing, especially your tip on tips! Oh, and guess what? Our local bank in Virginia can exchange our currency for Canadian dollars. We always tip well to the staff and crew on all our adventures, and we really appreciate their hard work. Thanks a bunch!
So much colorful content in an under ten-minute video: Ducks, chickens, red vines on fence, undulating green vineyards, ancient stone, rustic doors, potted plants hanging from exterior walls, and a Francigena pilgrim bathed in the light of a street lamp...
Thanks for the video! We’ve been following you for a while, and are very excited to start our VF adventure from Lucca tomorrow. Maybe we’ll meet along the way.
Always room for a little tiramisu ❤
Thanks! I appreciate the oral summary you provided between the walk and your dining experience. Nice to see that ffter a long day, you were able to enjoy gourmet "fuel" for the next day's adventure 🚶 🎒
Lovely Lucca. Really enjoyed architectural details, gargoyles (?) for example. Amidst the historic structures, it's nice to see you're eating well 🍷
Cheers 🍷🍷
😊 3:01 gorgeous day for you. Congrats !
Totally worthy of your zero day! ❤
What's the best way to get to where you started the Mosquito Creek Trail, say from downtown? Thanks. Apologies, you answered that in the description I think.
I enjoyed sharing your trip! The views along the Pacific Coast certainly do not disappoint. I chuckled at your reaction to the Roomette. My husband and I took the Amtrak City of New Orleans from New Orleans to Chicago and we found the Roomette to be an adventure! Unfortunately, it was during the time when Covid restrictions were still very strict and we had to take our meals in the Roomette and they were pre-packaged, microwaved options. Not great. We were allowed in the view car with masks and distancing from others. I look forward to taking the train again now that those restrictions are not in place. It looks like much more fun.
Hi you two. I spent another day fun today with Susan Algie who is visiting London . She too is following you intently and enjoying all your videos.
Hi Dave and Gail! It’s Myrna. We also started in Lucca so following you brings great memories. It was interesting to see the 1960s church. It must be the newest church in the country!
I really enjoy the long shots of Gail walking in profile. The barrier / gate of multicoloured rectangles was an interesting detail. It was nice to see urban layers. Take care 🚶
Can't wait to see more of Lucca!
The sandstone descent ~ Gail: .. harrowing... horrible." David:"... a little bit tricky. " Loved the dark stone building with bright red potted plants.
That looked like a lovely day in spite of the overcast skies. I had to chuckle when you described the harrowing descent. In my book, descents are ALWAYS worse than climbs. Maybe it's just my old knees and hips! David, I just went back and watched your video about your video photography and editing set-up. Very helpful! I make a lot of video of our walks, but I have never done much with editing. I'm tempted to try to do more. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! We're taking the trip in April and this has been super helpful.
Happy to experience this journey with you.
Haiku 🐌 hiking and cooking / snail on Carrara marble / Francigena walk 🐌
Very beautiful and so interesting!
A long day. But a good day. Dare I say, it was Marble-ous 😉
Oh, the puns! Keep them coming.
You are adorable! Still perky!! Thank you for staying up late and getting up early, walking and walking and walking, sharing this remarkable journey with us!! Thank you on Thanksgiving Day in Canada!!
Hi, Gail and David! I have just discovered your channel and I am anxious to go back and watch all your videos from the beginning. My husband and I are long distance and short distance walkers/hikers. We walked the West Highland Way in Scotland in 2023 and we are planning a camino in Europe for after he retires next year. I look forward to enjoying your experiences and learning from your videos. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! The Camino Frances was our first walk 12 years ago and it certainly hooked us. Enjoy!
Good job! Keep going!
Thanks! everything is going smoothly on the trails, despite all the rain.
Hey you two! Joan and Fraser are staying with me and last night after dinner we all enjoyed together watching your latest videos. Fraser said he was very very impressed with the videography. Have fun!
That’s so good to hear. We appreciate all the support from you, Joan and Fraser!
I imagined what it would have been like when those time worn doors were new in the twisty turns of the medieval mountain village. Such rich history. Enjoying the long walk with you both. Be well and continued safe travels. 😊
Thanks. Our walk is proceeding well with many twisty medieval streets traversed along the way!
Thanks for sharing this wet, arduous walk. The mists make for splendid photos. Have a good rest. And walk on 🚶
Gail and I agree that this is the most rain-filled walks in the last 12 years of doing these.
