ARB Awning on Yakima Crossbars
มุมมอง 25K8 ปีที่แล้ว
This is an ARB Touring Awning 2000x2500 attached to a set of Yakima round crossbars. Parts required are 4 U bolts and 4 L brackets along with the corresponding M6x20mm bolts, nuts, and washers all the way around. Mount is very sturdy, and I would recommend measuring your mounting points beforehand, as it is very hard to slide the awning once you have the bolts in the brackets. I did this instal...

    Very helpful idea. I know it's been many years but how have they held up? Any bending on the brackets or issues with bolts?

    Looking everywhere for someone who did this on round bars. Perfect, thanks!

    Great set up! What size U-bolts did you use?

    Have you seen any other solutions for the core bar or wing shaped bars? Wondering if I could force the U-bolt fix with additional spacers on the tapered side of the wing bar and get the same stability?

      Tommy, for the core square bars I've seen "square" U-bolts that should do the trick, but the wing shaped bars are tricky. Some I've seen have channels that you can put a nut thru, which would allow for use of a L-bracket in mounting the awning similar to what I did in the video.

    Thanks! Just bought a Tepui awning and have round Yakima cross bars. Love the U bolt solution

    Just now looking at an awning, was looking for ways to attach to the window-mounted crossbars I just ordered, this is brilliant! Mine are oval so will have to engineer something a little different, but glad to see how it can be done, thanks!

    How has this held up for you driving? I am looking to do something similar to my Smittybilt awning.

      Eric Burke it’s been fine, still on the Jeep now and an actually looking to use this same solution to mount a fox wing 270 degree awning to the other side as well...

    Do you think mounting to the shorter bars are still ok?

    I am installing the new ARB aluminum 2500 x 2500 awning on a Runaway Navigator camper. The camper is a 4 x 8 mini camper. I had the manufacturer install roof racks - they are round tubes. I used the ARB L brackets on the two rack tubes - one on each with two U bolts securing each. ARB suggests that I not have more than 27.5 inches of the awning "unsecured" and they prefer three brackets. If I space the awning - I can have the awning only 5.6 to 6 inches more than the 27.5 suggested "overhang". This new awning also has three channels for the M6 bolts, not two like yours. Do you think I will be OK with this set up? I suppose I could find some way to add a third bracket, but the roof lines slopes and it would be tricky, but doable if I got someone to fabricate something. I wish I could add a photo to show you!

      Charles Moman So how is the awning doing spaced like that?? Any problems? im am wanting to do the same thing!!...Please respond

    • @charlesmoman
      @charlesmoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the added supports on each end, I feel it is VERY safe and rock solid.

    • @charlesmoman
      @charlesmoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a fabricator make me two 4"x14" heavy aluminum sections. I bolted them near both ends. So now the aluminum awning is supported at four points. It's perfect.

      Charles Moman ok cool, i called ARB and Scott (Manager) told me to buy a 8ft 2x2 steel square stock and mount to back of awning for support. Then mount as i usually would, said it will be perfectly fine now. i could go over the 27.5 by another 15 inches if i wanted. but mine will only go over by like 7 or 8 inches

      Sounds great. I considered a long bar like that. Look on my TH-cam channel and you will see how I ended up doing it. Blessings!

    The ARB "L" bracket holes need to be (1 7/8") center line from hole to hole. 2" should work...

    Mike- Your Yakima 1" rack bars stick out really far. Thats what I need. Did you buy them extra long?

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So those Yakima crossbars are actually takeoffs from a 2002 Ford Explorer SportTrac I used to have, they were the right size for it. I kept them for the Grand Cherokee because they worked for the awning and I also use a Yakima snowboard rack with them... The other nice thing I like about the awning mounting that far out is that when you attach the room to the awning, its flush with the doors...

  • @drivndiscodrivn
    @drivndiscodrivn 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great Job. Did you have to drill any holes in the brackets that attach to the awning or did they already line up with the channels? Thanks

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I was lucky enough to find L brackets that had holes spaced the same as the channels on the awning... Just measure the gap beforehand...

  • @orlyg1521
    @orlyg1521 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What size U bolts and cross plates did you need to attach the L bracket to?

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Yakima round bars are 1", so i went to the next size larger U-bolt (maybe 1.25"), and the cross plates were just the ones that came with them...so parts were a total of 4 U-bolts (with cross plates and nuts), 4 L-brackets, and extra washers, the rest of the bolts came with the awning...

    thanks for the video. Just started to look at the arb awning. The one other video I've looked at so far says nothing about how it was attached.... I do have the square tubes on my rack but I doubt it would matter as far as using the u bolts.. I've done it with other things and never a problem.. Were the M-6 bolts hard to find?? Not familiar with them.. Anyways.. Very helpful..

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I seem to remember the awning came with six m6 bolts, and I use a total of eight, so I did grab the extras at the same local hardware store that I bought the u-bolts and L-brackets at, same thing with the washers all the way around...

  • @jamesdoe5824
    @jamesdoe5824 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think the L-brackets will bend over time?

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kaipo Fitisemanu Fair question but I don't think so... I believe there is no chance the weight of the awning would compromise them, and it would take a fair bit of sustained force to bend them. In terms of further structural rigidity, I feel like maybe I've seen some larger brackets that have a diagonal brace from the top awning bolt to the far (from the awning) U bolt, but I don't know if those can be had off the shelf, you might have to fabricate them. One other thought was to add a 3rd U-bolt on each crossbar between the two existing ones, but you'd need to drill an extra hole in the l-bracket and that might just be overkill....

  • @dizkoteck

    Good job. The price they charge for these things is retarded. You think I can attach the awning to the cars mounting bars with no roof rack?

    • @mikepowersadventurechannel
      @mikepowersadventurechannel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +dizkoteck So the Curt roof rack in the video was actually attached to the same Yakima crossbars as the awning. During a recent trail ride to Flagpole Knob, the Curt roof rack mounts warped and loosened to the point where the rack was sliding around on the crossbars, but the awning stayed put. I wound up driving the 2 hours back home on the interstate with the roof rack, spare tire, and Hi-Lift in my back seat, and upon returning home, the awning mount was still as secure as when I first put it on. In short, I have no durability concerns as of yet with my mounting solution, and it should stand by itself just fine...

      @dizkoteck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Powers It looks like you can attach more U bolts on the rack to the bars too
