Exploring Learning Theories and Tools for Enhanced Student Understanding and Success
In the context of fostering a culture of continuous improvement among nursing students, which of the following strategies best supports the long-term retention and application of clinical skills, while aligning with the principles of incremental improvement and NLN Competency I: Facilitate Learning?
A. Focusing on comprehensive assessments at the end of each term to gauge knowledge retention.
B. Incorporating spontaneous, unannounced practical exams to simulate high-stakes environments.
C. Encouraging students to practice one specific clinical skill daily, building upon each skill progressively over the course of the term.

Hello, how are you? I am a regular viewer of your TH-cam channel. I came here to say that- "Your channel always leaves me excited for the next upload!" Good Luck
Thanks so much for your very kind comment! We appreciate you watching and glad you keep coming back for more!
I experienced educator incivility on clinical placement. It negatively affected my learning experience. The remarks were incivil and because I am the student all that I can say is 'thank you, I take that on board'. Any other response is seen as defensive.
Thank you for your response, and we are sad to hear that you've experienced incivility from educator colleagues. Thank you for sharing, and we hope that you are able to share the experience you had with leadership so it can be addressed. Advocacy for ourselves and others is a critical step in addressing incivility.
What? Students dont read what you tell them to read? Told them to do it. And if they wont do what they they should. Teste them and give a accurate mark which reflects their knowledge.
Thanks for your response. Students not reading the assignments can be related to multiple factors. One of the major contributing factors is that we may assign too much content to read. For example, if we assign 400 pages to read in 1 week, we have to ask ourselves...'what content is essential for the student to read?'' and 'what timeframe can they read the content?'. In the nursing curriculum, reading is essential, so we must figure out how to ensure it is 'most likely' to happen. Of course, there is a self-directed element to reading the textbooks and articles that adult learners are responsible for. Good thoughts, and thanks for sharing!
Omg. You give teaching plans? I need this.
Yes, we do! We map out your 7-Week Study Plan to success!

Hey!!! Katrina, glad you caught the video❤❤❤❤
Passing the CNE test is when you study hard, if you can’t study or you don’t have time for your studies I’d advise you get yourself a help like Mr James
I’ve always believed CNE exam is not for all but studying, you need God’s grace to pass
I studied for months and couldn’t pass, I guess passing is a blessing
CNE exam might seem so tough to pass but studying very hard is a very vital skill to win trust me.
@@almabeatriz2600 correct, everyone has a different fate
I’ve taken the test for the 4th time and yet I failed, I really studied hard enough each time, please I need Mr James info.
Dr. Sellars, Thank you for sharing this informative snapshot on Kolb's Experiential Learning. I appreciate how you connect concepts, which helps me understand and create diagrams with colored markers. I particularly liked the explanation of Reflective Observation, along with the graphic showing students in a clinical setting observing a procedure. Additionally, your discussion of diverse learning styles and their percentages provided clarity and helped me see Kolb's Learning Theory from a new perspective. I was able to identify my areas of strength and weakness more clearly. Prezi is now my favorite tool, but I still use everything, including Poll Everywhere, learning activities, and group discussions. Thanks for the suggestion about getting outdoors before studying. I've started running in the mornings before my day begins, and it's been very helpful. I had forgotten how peaceful early mornings are L. Rafe
It is on pg. 35 in Caputi.
Correct, Randy! That was a typo...'65' should have been '35'. Thanks for watching and for catching that! We hope you enjoyed the content.

I came across your videos while studying for the CNE exam in 2024. I found them very helpful and much more insightful than the review offered by the NLN. Thank you!

Good Morning @decarlosbradley4468! Thanks for joining!
Thank you for these tips
@cherylkabe7880 It's our pleasure!
Is presenting at a faculty meeting scholarship of application? Or, does it have to be at a conference?
Great question, @brenthirschy3911! It depends on what you are presenting. The answer is 'Yes' if the presentation is related to your area of specialty and the content is peer reviewed, documented, and disseminated widely then it meets the scholarship of application criteria. If not, then it would not meet the criteria for scholarship of application. Caputi, pg. 194 shares several great examples of how we can demonstrate this area of scholarship. We hope this has been helpful. If you still have questions, we have other recommended resources we can share. Reach out to us via email: info@drsellarseducate.com Happy Holidays!
Great snapshot. Very relevant and right on time. Thank you Dr. Sellars.
@dionesandiford5950 Thanks so much for the feedback! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, Dr. Sellar for clear and concise instructional videos.
Thanks for watching! We are so glad the information is helpful!
Another informative educational session related to aligning national resources to what we do as academic and clinical nurse educators, to prepare entry-level nursing students for successful licensure and practice. Many thanks to Dr. @Sellars and team.
@mmyles3641 Thank you so much for the great feedback! We appreciate you watching our episodes!
Great information and nicely developed crosswalk, Dr. @Sellars and team. I appreciate how your team created a crosswalk to align NLN Hallmarks of Excellence to NLN CNE, CNE cl and CNE n competencies to QSEN domains and KSAs. Quite comprehensive. I answered the thought-provoking question correctly. In addition to your thorough rationales for the incorrect answer choices, distracter A does leave out not only the client/patient but the other members of the healthcare team (case manager, social worker, dietician, pharmacist, etc.) who are also involved in client/patient-centered care. Thanks to you, Dr. @Sellars, and to the entire team. Another terrific snapshot.
Thank you for the great feedback, @mmyles3641! We appreciate you watching!
Thank you Dr. @Sellars and team for consistently providing key resources and tools to help guide us toward successful completion of the CNE®, CNE®cl and CNE®n. I had not reviewed the QSEN crosswalk and was unaware of its existence until this video. I chose the correct answer, though. You illustrated how to rationalize the correct answer through your crosswalk demonstration. Many thanks for all you do and your team does for our profession. Rationale for me: Safety and its alignment in all settings (and across national resources) requires continuous review, analysis and assessment to ensure we are delivering what we say we are, as nurses, educators and professionals in healthcare. Inspecting what we expect...and addressing it if we are doing well and making the needed corrections "just in time" and with minimal delay. Delays can cost clients their lives and cost our students money and time they may not have.
@mmyles3641, Great insight and perspectives! It’s our pleasure to provide our weekly snapshots. We are glad they are helpful.
Thank you Dr. @Sellars and team for another informative video. The correct answer (#3) is also comprehensive based on the question asked, and could include actions listed in distracter #2, which could be another reason that #3 is the best answer overall. Thank you for pointing out that the focus of the question is also on post-clinical versus pre-clinical activities.
Thanks for the feedback, @mmyles3641! We are glad the rationale was helpful. Make sure you also review the B&H textbook for further comprehension.
It’s our pleasure, @mmyles3641! Thanks for tuning in!
Thank you. This was a good overview and high-level review of key CNE domains/competency areas for individual content readiness assessments. I really appreciated the thought-provoking questions with rationales for both the correct answers and distracters. Many thanks Dr. @Sellars and team.
Great video. I did select the appropriate answer. How: The health assessment course is at the beginning of a program and requires hands on demonstrations using procedural knowledge to build deeper meaning behind the skills, and the rationales for basic and specific assessments of health along with the health findings. Thanks Dr. @Sellars and team.
@mmyles3641 thanks for the feedback! Great points about the rationale for the correct answer! Your explanation is perfect!
Which option did you choose?
Excellent snapshot re: vertical and horizontal alignment in curriculum mapping, and as they relate to the revised Bloom's taxonomy. Many thanks Dr. @Sellars and team.
@mmyles3641 thanks for the great feedback! We are glad it was helpful.
This is not okay, and it’s been PROVEN that high stakes testing was just to keep the program out of trouble. You’re not giving 100% of the information.
@RNsquared2 We support the NLN BOG statement about high stakes testing. We agree that research shows that their is great risk when utilizing this type of testing.
I’m not understanding why you’re basically still advocating for high stakes exams, when there has been NUMEROUS research pieces that says it’s NOT best practice!
Jasmine, the purpose of this snapshot is to share the perspectives that are cited in the noted resources. We don’t advocate for high-stakes exams, and have a neutral position, just as stated by the NLN BOG in 2012. We hope that helps to clarify.
@@DrSellarsEducate NLN fair testing guidelines is about equity and inclusion in standardized testing. And also, accreditors has also endorsed the NLN plenty. Nursing should not be gate kept if the student has made it to the end of the program & shown capability of safe nursing. This is the media that sketchy schools will use as evidence that they’re not wrong, and you have misconstrued the NLN’s guidelines.

Thank you , very informative.
Roxana, It’s our pleasure! Thank you for the feedback. We are glad it was informative.
Mindfulness meditations helped a lot with my studying, concentration, and exam nerves. Just 10 minutes a day will do wonders. It's so important to relax the mind and empty the cup for a bit. The book "30 Days to Reduce Anxiety" by Harper Daniels should be passed out to all students, it teaches good techniques for putting the mind in the present moment for relaxation. The mind works best when not overextended or overwhelmed with worries and stresses.
Excellent point, Ricky! Thank you for this great insight and recommendation.
Congratulations!!!!
This was amazing!!! I loved it. Very helpful. I am new to Dr. Sellars and nursing education. I love the engagement of the Webinar. I can only hope to attain a quarter of the fun and creativity as an educator as Dr. McMillan-Bohler! How awesome, I know students really love your classes. Thank you for sharing so many wonderful ideas.
Thanks for the great feedback! You can absolutely create innovative evidence-based teaching strategies in your classroom, and we are here to share suggestions to assist you. We'll see you in a future episode!
Thank you for these snapshots! I took my exam today and passed. Your videos are so nice to listen to after reading and taking questions. I was nervous when I saw the new handbook come out and thought about rescheduling but just decided to trust the process like we tell our students. Thanks again!
Congratulations! We are so happy for you! We are glad our videos were helpful, and would love for you to share our channel with your colleagues. See you in a future episode!
