Planxty Irwin by Turlough O'Carolan
I've always loved the tunes of O'Carolan, and back in Padstow, Cornwall where I originally hail from, we play a few of them as a set of waltzes...four or five of us together...on accordions... (Oh, the humanity!!) ;-)
I think I probably heard this tune first from The Chieftains (Derek Bell) although outside of harping, Planxty Irwin is probably most closely associated with the late, great Liam O'Flynn and the seminal Irish band, Planxty.
"...because whenever you think of the harp, you think of the accordion...as they're so similar." - Jimmy Keane

Planxty Hewlett - (Slowly, D scale, Part A, Part B, whole thing)

A breakdown of the popular Turlough O'Carolan tune, Planxty Hewlett. As a piano accordion player, I seem to have developed an affinity for 18th Century harp tunes (go figure). This is a tune that I have been using with the three students I have, poor misdirected individuals who apparently think the piano accordion is almost cool. It's a great tune for focusing on the scale of D major. First, I'...

Three part double jig in G Major. I first heard a two part version of this by The Fureys (I think from the album Banshee). I believe the third part is attributed to Jackie Daley (Patrick Street, and De Dannan who recorded the tune as Kitty's Wedding). I learned it from Jimmy Keane. Check out the version by bohola (Jimmy Keane, Pat Broaders, and Sean Cleland) for some brilliant variations. th-ca...
The Hole in the Hedge

Building on the C and G scale and arpeggio fingering. I've been teaching this tune to a couple of students. I'm trying to use tunes that incorporate some of the basic techniques, such as scales and arpeggios, and The Hole in the Hedge fit the bill nicely. I do refer to it as the Hawthorne Hedge at the end, but it's not, it's the Hole. Jig, 6/8 time. C major. You could use a metronome when you g...
Fingering for piano accordion, scales of C and G major.

A short video on basic piano accordion technique. My first teacher showed me how to play the scale of C and what fingers to "assign" to each key while doing it. Hoping this is useful to someone.

It's been a while since I played these two, which is probably more than self evident (as a piper friend of mine as apt to quote, too many notes). However, they remain two of my favorite tunes, so I thought as I was messing around with some effects in some digital studio software, I'd make it sound as if I was playing in a hall or theater or or church, even if I can't go out of the basement cave...
The Fox Hunters

The Fox Hunters' is a traditional Irish reel with five parts. I first heard it on a cassette of Richie Kelly, and learned it in G as was on the tape. It's sometimes played in A as well, and it's great fun to modulate from G to A. Putting these up for my nephew. Not much for precision I'm afraid, I tend to go to fast and probably would benefit from more "correct" fingering, so you get them warts...

Thank you! 🙂

Lovely tune Chris
Never mind the ambient noise, where is the crowd these guys deserve? Jimmy keane is an accordion master of giving faint hints of the upcoming tune change long before it happens so smoothly you forget it’s actually a different tune. I have always loved bohola and wish they would come my way. I’d make sure everyone knew what absolute masters they are so they would have an appreciative audience.
Very nice speed’ , I’m just learning this tune. I’m impressed with your LH. I was playing LH using the traditional Bass Chord , but will change this to your style. Ken in Scotland
The original dance has disappeared. it is now full of irrelevant tourists and less lively: th-cam.com/video/ISO1QmG_VE4/w-d-xo.html
Just as awesome!

Beautiful, good teacher ever
Cheers!
Awesome!
great, thx
Enjoyed that. Thanks Chris.
Hi Chris! I have been recommended to your channel and I have been very happy to see what you are doing, I am from Mexico and I play the piano accordion, here unfortunately there is no information about Irish music and even less in accordion, on the Internet I have not found anything and I took one Pleasant surprise to see that you do tutorials, do you have a page for that? I am eager to learn more, ornaments, technique, etc, please if you can continue the tutorials I will appreciate it I hope you understand me, my english is not good
Hello Garnik! I don't have a web page, but I am planning on doing some more videos on Irish piano accordion techniques. Would you find that useful?
@@greensqueezebox Much! It would be amazing and I will be very grateful, I saw your kesh jig tutorial and it helped me a lot, all the information and technique is valuable Again, thank you very much!
This is really great, Chris-and so nice to " meet" your brother. Beautiful music! Thanks for posting. Have fun. Glad you could do this.
Great Chris !
Lovely Chris👍
Really great! Love it, gotta learn this sometime. Amazing arrangement, beautiful left hand parts, also.

Well done that man! :-)
good man Chris!!
Nice one! A great rendition of one of my favourite tunes. (edit) Brilliant. You've got musicians with pyrotechnics and backing tracks etc and you guys come along just the two of you and make all that beautiful music.
Nicely done, just discovered this in time for Christmas, hope I get in all the words, its a long one!
@mgggvtbp Cheers!
This is my favorite track from the Bohola cd i have, and it's fun to see it live. Beautiful!
@bruceworman No, Jimmy isn't blind, just transcendental when playing the box.
My favorite thing about this video is watching the accordion player rocking in obvious bliss. He reminds me of Ray Charles. The only thing missing is him hugging himself as Ray did. I guess Ray couldn't get his arms around his piano. The accordion is already being hugged so all that remains is to rock. Is he also blind?
Jimmy & Pat.....that was MAGNIFICENT!!......thank you.
I like this one even better than St. Brendan's Voyage, because it has such a nice lilting tune! =)
@chrisbrinn Yes. Good music. And thanks again!
@42Springfield Fairplay. I posted some stuff before and got a bit wound up with video quality and sound critics. Not your fault. 'Nuff said. Good music though, eh?
Sorry about that! I certainly didn't intend to criticize the person who made the video. I have been to Irish pubs all over this country and Europe, and I certainly am used to people talking during a performance. I thought your video, and their music, were so good, that I guess your quite understand dialogue in the background annoyed me too much. You can, if you wish, consider me an idiot for not being more sensitive. That seems fair enough. And thanks for posting your video anyway.
@42Springfield The "idiots" would be me (holding the camera), my wife (concerned about child care for the rest of the day), and my son (who wanted french fries). If you don't like ambient noise from concerts, I suggest you stick to CD's and steer clear of open air events and especially don't go into any pubs where you might hear more of this great music.
Great vocal and great instrumental. Too bad those two idiots near the camera couldn't shut up for a minute or two.
