Can I carve a GOLD catching sluice box?
I had a few days to kill before heading out to the creek so I decided to try and carve a sluice box to see how difficult it would be.

Battling summer and upsetting crayfish for GOLD!
Very inventive and it worked, i look forward to part 2 "Long Tom" lol
I’ll have to find a suitable log for that and probably borrow a trailer, but I think it might be a fun idea so we’ll see if I can make that happen
Can't wait to see you make a full tree length sluice box!
The only real way to prove a design would be to run the same paydirt through different riffle designs and compare the recovery rate for each design. Just test panning tailings doesn't prove anything if all tailings aren't run through to confirm losses.
I have used several other sluice designs on this stretch of that creek in very similar material and got much better recovery results, enough so that I am pretty confident that this is a fair representative result. With this method of testing there will always be a margin for error but that’s why I run several tests on each design, and I don’t need an exact number to tell me if the sluice is working as intended. When I have more time on the creek I try to test more of the tailings but I had limited time and bad weather to work with on this trip so I had to be a bit quicker than I would be ideally
Cool setup indeed fam. Keep at it. Gold Squad Out 🤠
Interesting idea, would be nice to have something similar to a hydraulic riffle that you could use on the public fossicking areas. Shame that this version hasn't worked for this test.
I do have a few other variations that will hopefully work better
Could you do a vid on a mat clean out ?? Like an effective way to wash out the miners moss
Will do at the next opportunity!
Great video ty 😊
Great to see you back out on the creek man! Fingers crossed for some better gold next time
Thanks man
Great day out there fam. Keep on having fun getting that Au and living the dream. Gold Squad Out 🤠
You probably want to bolt that anvil down in future to stop it moving all over the place lol
If it wasn't sitting on what is also my splitting stump I would!
Or at least keep clearing the rocks by dragging your finger tips in the direction that the water flows.
I do try to manage that, but I miss a few every now and then particularly when I’m trying to work quickly
classify ya material down to fine gravels, if theres a clay layer punch down to it. if the miners moss hasnt got a backing put v matting under it coz fine stuff can pass right through the moss and float away from the tailings pile . youll get better recovery rates.
All my miners moss is backed, there doesn’t appear to be a defined clay layer but the gold in this spot seems to be concentrated in the first foot of material. As for classification, I’m trying to build a good sluice that functions without classification to improve efficiency
@@awi7317 hmmm I'd dig around to see if there is a clay layer also go up the the creek testing along the way ya might find higher speck counts further up. it's going to be tricky to make one that you don't need to classify unless you make a gold trap sluice. When you have larger rocks in the sluice it can mess the flow and blow out fine gold every object will create micro currents ahead and behind them . That's why you classify, try it without the riffles and use expanded mesh instead you'll get less block up and rocks will rolls easier over. Just make sure the smaller rocks are dancing in the cells of the mesh . You can get the mesh in the bbq section of Bunnings. I hope that helps 😀
If there is a clay layer then it’s a couple of meters down because I went down about a meter and a half on a later trip and didn’t find it, upstream does have better speck counts but in the summer there isn’t any water up there. As for the riffles/expanded mesh half the fun for me is building the gear where I can and it is tricky but I enjoy the challenge of giving a go. Thanks for your comments gadzee 🙃
@@awi7317 I totally get the challenge I'm just trying to help. It's all trail and error river sluices can be frustrating at times. If you get a metal pole you can drive it into the gravels to get a idea how deep the clay is. The old timers used to do that it also works for bedrock. Keep the video going AWI 😀
Nice find, mate. Love seeing some gens alongside my gold I reckon youd have more luck classifying down considering the eater flow though.
Realy enjoyed that thank you new sub London England
Thanks for saying so
Think you need to sieve down your material so those small stones aren’t blocking up the sluice mats and costing you gold. Also thought the riffles should be facing against the flow of water to make the sediment hit them and circle back so take longer for material to get out and you catch more. Just noticed those things from watching Freddy and Juan’s show 😂
You're quite right that the sluice would work better with screened material (as will all sluices), but my goal when I'm building new sluices is to try to make a system that will work well without needing classification which I think is the best way to improve efficiency for sluices considering how much time it takes. Also I am working on trialing these riffles in different arrangements to see if they may be improved.
@@awi7317 have seen your sluices in trademe and are great value. I’ve only just started panning after seeing a lot of it on tv haha. So if I go good may buy a sluice got 10 colours in 1 pan the other day in Otago
Great job getting that Au fam. Keep on having fun and living the dream. Gold Squad Out 🤠
not enough water flow.
Yeah definitely, it always takes a little time to figure out new sluices
Nice work
Great day out there fam. Keep on having fun getting that Au and living the dream. Gold Squad Out 🤠
the sluice would run a lot better if you classified the material down to 5-6mm.
This is true, but I am trying to develop systems that will work effectively without classification to increase processing speed
@@awi7317 makes sense, but as you said you had it running at the wrong level, it looked to be sitting about 4 deg but should be between 8-10 deg tilt, that adjustment alone would make a huge difference, look forward to seeing the next video on it, thanks for sharing bud.
Yeah definitely got the angle wrong cause I was rushing to get ahead of the weather and should have just done it right instead
Also way to little water flow, angle would help but stream was to slow as well.
Great day out there fam. Happy holidays 😊. Keep on having fun getting that Au and living the dream. Gold Squad Out 🤠
Nice camera work 🤣
That literally is trash. By the time that is cut you will have a gem the size of a tic tac. That is neither dark opal nor a crystal so thats perhaps $200 in opal.
And yet this stone will cost you $12
Great times indeed fam. Cool setup. Keep on having fun getting that Au and living the dream. Gold Squad Out 🤠
Ya need slow that water down lad,get rid of that shingle,,the Gold will be better caught in minors moss specially that fine gold lad. Its not about speed lad its about the Gold.
What makes that design anything different from a modified Clarkson riffle? Also what distance apart are they? There is a formula (I'll see if I can find it) for riffle spacing...as the material looks dead in the gaps and is not "dancing"
Mostly just because i haven't seen any Clarkson riffles that are set up with the angle pointed directly towards the top of the sluice (and a slightly more saleable name), but the material is dancing quite well on top my old phone just hasn't got great resolution
Anything can catch chunks or big pieces but if you have something that catches the fines and cleans out good that’s gold. 🤘👍🤙🤷♂️
feel like if you classify them big rocks out it will work better
I’m absolutely sure that it would but there’s so little gold in this spot that if I take the time to classify the material it’s not worth it anymore
not so much for the amount of gold but for fluid exchange between lights and heavies larger rocks disturb this flow and make it less effective but then they are so deep riffle's so maybe not that much difference@@awi7317
too much water flow maybe, you have to give the gold a chance to settle. that water is blastin'
With any other sluice I would agree but I designed this one to handle lots of water so that I could run it in some different areas and if it’s giving 90%+ recovery as it is set up here I’m pretty happy with it
Aren't there any problems with the material getting over the first riffle because it's so tall?
not really, most of the material gets washed over it fairly easily with the extra water flow other than the big rocks but it's actually helpful because then you can pick most of the rocks out of the sluice before they can affect the other riffles function
Yes I have actually bought a tripod part way through the trip so future videos will be better on that front
have you considered getting a tripod to hold the phone? might mean you can get some better camera angles
I agree with the comment. This is such a good video!
Wow such a good and informational video! Keep up the good work mister lord

Classifi that stuff down to half inch man
i usually find that i can get more gold by saving the time taken to classify and running more material rather than upping my recovery like 5% with the way i run this sluice
@@awi7317 I understand you can see in my video me feeding straight I but removing larger stuff on the flair plate. Them big bolder create low pressure and suck the gold out behind them and take some of your gold with them anyway good luck
