Haven’t seen any new videos for 24. Hoping to see them soon. 3:36 3:38 😊
Thank you, Nancy! Life has taken over this year and I had to step away from TH-cam, but I'm hoping to get back to it in 2025. I'm glad to know you're interested in seeing more!
I hope you keep posting videos. I loved your list!!❤
Incredibly Bright Creatures was wonderful!
I like LGBTQIA🏳️🌈🌈🏳️🌈🌈💖🌟💝😎
Awesome book, but I was struck by the utter improbability of alllllll those people who loved him. Someone that messed up is highly likely to spend his life alone.
I have recently found your website and your reading challenge mini course interest me. You mention that one of the things the reading challenge can do is to alert oneself to reading goals. However. When I listen to this list of your October 2023 recommendations, all the genres are different and yet they all sound so interesting to me. So is your personal challenge to read contemporary written by female authors? Is this the type of thing I would have taking your mini course? Or can I just choose a book or two from your latest monthly book recommendations? So I guess I’m a bit confused. Thanks for listening…
Hi Nancy! Apologies for just seeing this comment. The reading challenge course is something entirely new for 2024. It will help you build a custom challenge that connects your reading to your life, what you need now, and what you want to get out of your reading (which could be anything from fun to learning to creativity--and more). This will be different for everyone, and I'll walk you through different scenarios and examples of how this can work for you. My reading will always be varied and not limited to *just* my challenge--the challenge is always a part of my overall reading, but I pick up a variety of books throughout the year. My 2023 challenge was about connecting more deeply with the books I read--the things to learn, the author's story, my reaction to it, and the book in the world. You can learn more about that approach in this video: th-cam.com/video/SujJo_MazGc/w-d-xo.html. I'm still finalizing my 2024 challenge--more to come on that that soon :) Happy to answer any other questions! Feel free to comment here, or send me a message through the comment form on my site. Thanks for your interest!
I cried…a lot
Could you possibly read Seventeenth Summer by Maureen Daly. I think it was written in the 40s. It's my favorite book but one I have trouble getting other people to read. I also loved Anya by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer and Blackbird by Jennifer Lauck.
Killers of a Certain Age seems fun, I’m putting it on my TBR list 👍 Thanks!
I hope you enjoy it!
I just found your channel and I love your reviews. I totally agree with your analysis of American Mermaid and Community Board. On your recommendation, I just bought the last count. Thanks for the great videos!
Thank you so much! I hope you like At Last Count.
I really enjoy your videos and trust your recommendations, so much so I may read a Henry book someday. I did put How to Keep House on hold and look forward to getting some tips. How to think like a woman piqued my interest. Unfortunately, it's not available at my library, but I put it on my audible wishlist. Thank you.
Great video! Remarkably Bright Creatures has been on my TBR and you renewed my interest in it. I hadn't heard of At last Count before and was pleased to find it on Hoopla so I will be reading it soon. Thank you!
Thank you! I hope it's a good pick for you!
I appreciate the way you discuss books, so I couldn't be happier to have discovered your channel. I haven't read any of these books, but added No Two Persons to my collection and placed Maame on hold from my library. Some of my favorites I've read this year are The Wind Knows my name by Isabel Allende, Maybe you Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb, and I wonder as I wander by Langston Hughes.
Thanks so much! I haven't read any of those yet, but they're on my radar. Thanks for the recommendations!
Oh my gosh. I just read No Two Persons! I loved my time with the book and was captivated by the individuals. I hadn't read an Erica Bauermeister since 2011 when I fell in love with the School of Essential Ingredients. I think I am going to give some of her other books a try. Thanks so much for the recommendation.
@@kathykovach9937 I haven't tried any of her backlist yet. Good to know this one is worth reading!
To me what happened to Jude strained, and then broke, credibility. I just didn’t believe it and in the end I didn’t care. I finished it, despite it’s length, but… meh.
Great list!! Your channel just showed up in my feed, I clicked, watched, liked and subscribed, and have been watching your back list all morning! 🎉😊❤📕
Thank you so much! I'm still relatively new to regularly posting on TH-cam, so I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying my videos!
hej, Have you tried this book th-cam.com/video/j_CJZ9eHeNY/w-d-xo.html ?
Favorite books are A Charm of Finches by Suanne Laqueur and Everyday History by Alice Archer. I’m looking forward to reading No Two Persons. Thanks for your recommendations.
My favorite so far this year is Hello Beautiful by Ann Napolitano. I also read and really liked "I Have Some Questions for You". Maame is on my TBR, so I think that's next.
I liked Hello Beautiful as well, though I had a few quibbles with it that kept it out of my top books. Thanks for watching!
Great list! I’m adding some of these to my TBR list as well. 😊
Thanks! Glad you found some good ones!
Honey Girl by Morgan Rodgers: 4:15 Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters: 5:23 Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan: 6:38 The Antidote for Everything by Kimmery Martin: 7:24 The Great Believers by Rebbeca Makkai: 8:30 On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong: 9:42 Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston: 10:39 The Secret Life of Albert Entwistle by Matt Cain: 11:53 Stay and Fight by Madeline Ffitch: 12:47 This was a very wonderful video, thank you. I'm thinking about reading Stay and Fight, it has a very unique concept.
I loved the book but was very curious about the title. Glad to get that clarified and enjoyed the rest of the video. I personally don't think it would be good as a movie and would not care to see the play.
I am looking for more uplifting feel good books. Clean easy reads with some romance would be good. I like books with some magic realism too. Good list. Thank you
I am getting ready to retire and plan to spend a lot of time on one of my favorite activities…reading. Appreciate the recommendations..
Sounds wonderful--congratulations!
@@mindjoggle thanks!
Nicely put. I appreciate your sensitive commentary. Have the book…haven’t read it yet..
thank you for making this video! you helped me give a name to some of the details that i noticed in the book, and i loved the quotes that you found, too!
🤗
"Verges on torture porn"??!! A Little Life is emphatically and indisputably torture porn. And the "too muchness" of it isn't really an adequate defence for the way Yanagihara delivers child sexual abuse, self-mutilation and mental anguish by the bucket load. But what's truly extraordinary about the book is how many readers seem able to swallow it all without ever stopping for a moment to ask "Is this even remotely believable?" and "Is this actually okay as a form of entertainment?" If you set out the basics of Jude's story - orphaned, sexually and physically abused by his carers, kidnapped by a brother who sexually abuses and prostitute him, rescued and abused again, runs away and prostitutes himself, held captive and sexually abused by a creep, then, as an adult, physically abused and raped by his first love. Then he loses yet another loved one in a car accident! I mean: FFS!!!! It is graphic, but it is never believable. This tale of horrors exists not to enlighten us about child sexual abuse and it's victims, but only for readers to get off on the endless, epic suffering. The trade off is that they unconsciously agree not to ask any searching questions or bring any reality checks to the table. Don't ask why none of the oh-so-concerned friends - including a doctor - ever does anything to help Jude. (A real doctor would have had Jude sectioned to get him the necessary help - and, indeed, could have been struck off for not doing so). Also, don't ask why there are no women in the book. And don't delve too deeply into Yanagihara's somewhat creepy obsession with gay men, or her total ignorance of real gay men and the sexuality.
eh, I liked it
Only sane comment I’ve seen regarding this book
It's a book, a novel, art, there's liberty on portraits. It might not be believable, but it feels true. There are women in the book, Julia and Ana. And she's not obsessed with gay "men". There's only one true gay character in the book, JB. The relationship between Jude and Willem is undefinable. Willem is straight and Jude is forced asexual. And often people call things "porn" (a vague overused word) when they can't handle the extremity of a depiction. It's sort of meaningless.
@@TimeIdle Bollocks. It doesn't "feel true" to anyone with some kind of real awareness of the world. That "undefinable" relationship and those not-quite-gay characters are precisely what makes it nonsense, and insulting to real gay men. And A Little Life is in the same category of "art" as Days of Our Lives, or, more precisely, all those deeply weird, often creepy so-called "M/M romance" novels written by women about gay relationships as one-handed reading material for other women. It is not just torture porn. It is porn in the most obvious and basic sense.
What a tiresome hatchet job. The fact that Jude keeps escaping from one horror before falling into another can strain credibility (you conveniently ignore the whole "fairy tale" element of this where it's not supposed to be totally realistic), but it's surely within the realms of credibility that there are people who live out lives where they never escape abuse. It strikes me as a bit "off" to say a work of fiction is "too much" when some people's lives really are about this bad in reality. Furthermore, the accusation that readers "get off" on this is a bit silly, particularly given how many people don't finish the book. (Sure, maybe you can find someone who does get on it, but it's not fair to criticise a piece of work based on how a few people respond to it). This kind of work may not be OK for everyone as simple entertainment, but artists shouldn't be prevented from exploring these very difficult themes. Whether you think it's good art or not, I do think "A little life" is a work of literary art. Notwithstanding the problems of misogyny and sexism in writing/publishing, it's also unfair to criticize one individual book for not having sufficient representation of women (and "A Little Life" is a book written by a woman?!) . I'm reminded of critics who slated an exploration of toxic masculinity called "Here are the Young Men" for not having enough woman/girls in it *eye roll* And as someone else has pointed out, the author is not "obsessed" with gay men just because there are a couple of men who have sex with men in the novel. When Yanagihara only has a few women in the book, you say she's ignoring women; when she has a few gay men, she obsessed with gay men? Make your mind up.
i just finished the book and i’m glad to have met these beautiful, scarily real characters but i’m not sure if it was worth all the pain the book brings so i’m a bit divided lol
You're not alone in your mixed feelings! I've seen a lot of readers say they loved the book but will never be able to read it again, while others say they definitely will (after they've recovered from the first time!).
Wooow i love the way that Hanya speaks... So eloquent and poetic all that time hahah, a truly extension of the book!
😓 'promo sm'
Love these recommendations!
Thanks, Stephanie!
great! thanks, love Sunny
Loved this video! Two of my favorite things, dogs and books. I'm always excited for new books to look for at the library. That's also where I buy most of my books. I have sooo many at home to read, but I still cannot stay out of the library! I just got another stack yesterday. I also get them cheap online and at Pangobooks, thriftstores too. I have read Ordinary Grace and loved it. I put it on my "recommend list". I also love the Beartown series. The rest is going on my tbr list. Thanks again! I have an aussie with separation anxiety. I have no advice.😒 Like you, I run less. I try to plan things when my husband or son will be home, but I'm still his person.
Thanks! Glad to hear Ordinary Grace is worth the read. It's hard to have to plan around the dog's anxiety, but I feel bad leaving her for long stretches when it's such a struggle for her. We're making slow progress!
I LOVE Peace Like a River. So glad to see it mentioned here. It's such an under-the-radar book. Miracle Creek and Razorblade Tears are on my TBR as well, but I'm also adding Once Their Were Wolves. Thanks for this!
I think you'll love Once There Were Wolves if you're a fan of Peace Like a River!
Hello dear I want to discuss your youtube channel.
Great video! tbh i am still unsure how i feel about the book but i can't deny that it definitely impacted me lol.
