2023 Orchestration challenge Patrick M. Conoley

An Orchestration Club has an annual "challenge" to take a short piece, typically for piano solo, and orchestrate it for a large musical ensemble. This year the subject piece was the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F#. The video is my setting of the piece.

Come, Little Leaves, Song for Baritone and Piano
มุมมอง 100ปีที่แล้ว
A poem with perhaps a dual meaning Come, Little Leaves by George Cooper “Come, little leaves,” said the wind one day, “Come o'er the meadows with me and play; Put on your dresses of red and gold, For summer is gone and the days grow cold.” ... Dancing and whirling, the little leaves went; Winter had called them, and they were content; soon, fast asleep in their earthy beds, The snow laid a cove...

Patrick, good! Friendly advice, I hope you don't mind. Watch out for too low flute parts, they just won't ever be heard against several instruments at once. :) Horns are never placed inside a woodwind choir, by the way.

Good idea about the Flutes corrections. They are truly too low to be heard. The Bassoons above the Horns was an interesting choice,. OTHERWISE I loved a few of your ideas ♥ @patrickconoley4550

There are some really cool ideas here. I understand that you're fighting your sound set for balance, but there are several places where the flutes will get completely lost in the mix, e.g. b.41ff, 2nd flute in b.47ff. What's your reasoning for using a Wagner-style arrangement of the instruments in the score? (Horns between the clarinets & bassoons.)

Thank you for your observation. My concept started with a wind quintet plus timpani and strings. It's not a complete horn choir. I'll look at the flute passages. A revision will be posted soon.

I like the usage of pizz against the triplets m.29-31 Your simplification of the rolling patterns at m.19-25 are working, but removes some of the Beethoven "drive" and attenuates the excitation of this passage. Make sure your dynamics are appropriate: fff are probably not necessary in this piece. But overall: Good job!

    • @patrickconoley4550

Thank you for the feedback. The pizz-triplets are quite a mood and textural contrast. This is a different interpretation of 29-25, abstracting new motifs from the harmony of the running 16ths. To run the 16ths for the whole passage seemed to be too much, so I went for the dotted 8th-with-16th and syncopation instead for drive. Dynamics in playback are problematic. To get the blend I often have to do the conductor's job of reducing one instrument's dynamic to a level that graphically doesn't make sense in the score. This is the first orchestration that I have done for a large ensemble. Thanks again.
