Would be cool if this could be containerized. It could be used at stranded gas locations. PEM fuel cell containers could provide electricity and water on site from hydrogen. Containers could also hydrogenate CO2 to methanol, DME, or back to methane.

Now there are reports of finding Natural Hydrogen or white hydrogen 1.25km below the ground in nations like Mali, France, etc. Else Methane found in Natural Gas or in biogas or release by growing plants of rice or farted out by ruminants is the richest source of Hydrogen. Commercially Hydrogen is always coproduced along with CO or Ethylene or Propylene or Styrene monomer or Solid carbon or Oxygen or Chlorine gas and NaOH or KOH and that too in capacities that need continuous process operation rather than batch process operation. The coproduced Hydrogen is in a majority immediately consumed on site. Catalytic reactors for coproducing Hydrogen, pressure swing adsorption based separation of Hydrogen from unreacted Methane and higher alkanes, inerts, byproducts and recycle of unreacted Methane back to pyrolysis reactor needs regeneration of adsorbent and catalyst which implies that multiple beds have to be used for ensuring a continuous operation. Continuous processes like catalytic steam reforming of Methane operates at 20-30bara and temperatures upto 900degC. Use of catalysts and adsorbents compells to pretreat the feed gas mixture free from components that can poison the catalyst or adsorbent. Methane pyrolysis is favored by low pressure of Methane and temperatures above 1400degC to achieve substantial conversion of Methane to Hydrogen but use of such high temperatures faces practical problems. Catalysts can reduce the reaction temperature but need to be highly selective and have high life or be easy to regenerate. It should be investigated how selectivity towards Hydrogen formation and alkane conversion are affected if Natural Gas dry and desulphurized is fed to pyrolysis reactor instead of pure Methane and unreacted alkane seperated from product Hydrogen is recycled back to pyrolysis reactor.
