At the End of the Earth | An Ode to Scotland
มุมมอง 862ปีที่แล้ว
Last August I made the tough decision to leave Scotland after three amazing years. I had one last week between jobs, to fit in as much of Scotland as I could, so I headed up to the Highlands for a week of hiking and adventure. It didn't all go to plan, but it ended up being the most Scottish experience I could've imagined. Key locations: * (Start of) the Cape Wrath Trail - Knoydart variant from...

    Well done, guys. No-one should underestimate what a feat that is. I supported an old friend (Gerry Orchard) on his successful attempt in 1988. He saved a bit of time by going up Broad Stand (suitably roped) rather via than Lords Rake. I ran with him from the top of Scafell to the top of Yewbarrow and it bloody nearly killed me. I realised then that anyone who does the full round is superhuman.

      @MattGirvanNZ 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Cheers Mr Historian that's very kind, especially from someone who has a flavour for how tough the route is! Great that your friend was successful in 1988 - I'm sure there was a lot less info out there back then. I haven't been up Broad Stand but would love to give it a go.

    What a great idea for a day out! I’m originally from Hawera and remember fondly a childhood in a part of the world offering such wonderful outdoor opportunities. Only wish I’d made more of them at the time. Whilst I’ve spent most of my adult life in the UK I returned earlier this year for 3 months tramping and will do more when I return again in November for 3-4 months. Just a question regarding the track from Syme Hut to the summit: I planned to take this route in Feb and overnighted at the hut. A beautifully warm and sunny day followed but the wind…I’ve never experienced anything like it! I was literally blown along the ground in the flat area near the hut, and certainly any thoughts of summiting were gone. It looks pretty sketchy and as you say the scree makes for hard work but is it reasonably possible to follow, assuming good conditions? Great video and thanks for making the effort to record the occasion! You were fortunate in having such an enthusiastic support crew too, aw well as good weather!

      BTW BGR 695 (although the record shows me as 10 years older than I really was!)

      Wow sounds like we've got a fair bit in common Jeff! Yeah how lucky were we to grow up in a place like that... I also feel like I didn't really make the most of it until my later teenage years, and only fully appreciate it now that it isn't just on my back doorstep. Yeah the conditions up there can be crazy... Though as you can see we got incredibly lucky for our run. The route from Syme Hut to the summit isn't too bad in clear conditions - there are good patches of solid rock higher up, and the only way is up... But it isn't too well marked so can help to have a GPS route. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy your big trip in November, and congrats on the BGR!

    Astonishing feat, what amazes me the most is the demonstrated grit to not quit despite all that physical hardship along the way. Cannot agree though that It was self-supported since you bought food, slept on hotels etc. I would have done the same thought. The greatest moments to treat yourself to dine fine is after exhausting adventures.

    • @MattGirvanNZ
      @MattGirvanNZ 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the kind words, there were some tough moments but it was an amazing trip overall. So many good memories! Yeah the definitions of 'support' (as used in the FKT community) aren't the most intuitive and get a bit technical/geeky... 'Self-supported' doesn't mean no support, it just means you can use any unplanned resources that are available to every hiker/runner. What you're thinking of we'd call 'unsupported', meaning you're carrying everything you need for the whole journey (so not really do-able for a two week trip). And agreed, those town meals always taste phenomenal after a long day on the trails!

      Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the journey! My training was variable but generally a good few months of ~100 km weeks and 2000-3000 metres of vert. Lots of long runs in the hills, fastpacking weekends etc as I was focused on my Scottish National Trail trip only a few weeks later. There's a bit more detail in my blog for that trip if you're interested, link below. I think the boys down in London struggled a bit more with finding enough hills! stubbornlyoptimisticmatt.wordpress.com/2020/12/28/scottish-national-trail-trip-report-2/
