    I felt stupid for decades (my ex-husband told me every day for two years, "You're so stupid and ignorant. People are only nice to you because they feel sorry for you." Unfortunately, I believed him. I worked with a life coach about nine years ago and my entire life has changed. I now know I'm brilliant.

    I have a perspective on vocal fry that’s a little unique, I do this a lot unfortunately (and I hate it!) but I only started doing it since developing chronic fatigue syndrome / myalgic encephalomyelitis. My brain and body get absolutely exhausted to the point where it’s sometimes very difficult for me to make myself food, go to the bathroom, and speak. I’ve had this condition for several years now and it’s completely debilitating, I used to be highly functioning and successful but now I’m on disability. I often feel like I don’t have enough energy to end my sentences strongly, or even to speak normally. I hate that I vocal fry but I find it very hard to control with my new medical condition. Please don’t always autocorrect judge people or assume something about their character based on how they talk/sound, you never know what a person may be going through!!!

    • @StephanieBonteLebair
      @StephanieBonteLebair 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear about your condition. I'm sure that's hard. I'm just sharing what the research says about vocal fry. I don't ever make assumptions about someone's character. Helpful videos like this are not meant as a personal attack for people with special medical conditions.

    I remember a time when this was just not part of our culture. People, both male and female, spoke in their natural manner. Then during the 80s came the West Coast Valley Girl talk. It was made fun of and yet popularized in a Frank Zappa song titled “Valley Girl”. It also became popular in many movies for teens at that time, and into the 90s. As many of the locales of those movies were made to have taken place on the West Coast, primarily in Southern California. One movie in particular comes to mind, “Fast Time at Ridgemont High”. That movie was very popular with teens at the time. The OMG, as it is today, was originally, “Oh my God” or the word “like” being used at the beginning of every sentence. Another common vocal characteristic that can be traced back to that era was the tendency for someone to speak every sentence as if it were an uncertainty or a question. It was this particularly annoying lilt or rise toward the end of the sentence. It was as if trying to elicit validation from your best bff's in high school. It is annoying, and it appears immature sounding, and unfortunately it is most often found amongst young women.

  • @rondelp6498
    @rondelp6498 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, vocal fry is annoying and makes speakers (male and female) sound unintelligent. But why do (probably) a majority of women sound like they're 13 years old? Even the educated - spokespersons, doctars, lawyers - sound like they play on one the Disney Channel.

    • @12ealDealOfficial
      @12ealDealOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always suspected it was hormonal, particularly when it comes to fluff words in a phrase (like, just, because of the fact that, so.... yeah, etc). Feminine women from the past, particularly at the height of the trans-atlantic accent, spoke with much more articulation and breath. Men today who speak with good articulation and vocal posture are typically older, former military, or otherwise influential within a company.

  • @TheHighwinder
    @TheHighwinder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vocal fry originated in late 70s/early 80s as part of "valley girl" linguistics that was popularized further by Hollywood as the linguistics of snobbish bimbos - which stuck because it was based on reality. To this day, it conveys an arrogant but vapid airheadedness that is used to express a superficial and judgmental attitude. This is why it will close doors on you. Men generally don't use VF, as inherently built-in lower range and resonance is often misinterpreted as vocal fry. But it can be used intentionally if a vocal range or resonance does not go low enough, which is embarrassing for many men who are seeking or have obtained positions of notoriety. For men, high voices don't pay in any desirable aspect of life.

    Thank you for actually giving advice on how to fix vocal fry. I've seen so many videos on what it is, but not how to fix it. I find myself occasionally letting my voice fry at the end of sentences. I'm an educated working woman and I never do it on purpose. It just comes out sometimes and now I know why - I'm not giving enough breath to the end of my sentences. I will try this going forward - thank you!

      Yes, I give an extreme demo here - but I hear it in voices all the time. It's the creaky door sound you hear at the end of sentences. There are several articles out there about Vocal Fry. In fact, there are several videos about Vocal Fry on youtube with lots of other voice coaches too. Check them out!

      And then they try to make themselves immune to criticism by labeling it sexist to even hate vocal fry. Using some lame tu quoque: "Men do it too" and claiming that no one cares if men do it but only hate it when women do. "It's sexist!" Cries the feminazi. No, it's annoying as all hell. Seriously though, if you've done a search, you know there are lots of articles from feminists crying about how sexist it is to criticize vocal fry... And if you say you have never heard it, you are wrong. You have just never heard "of it." Once I discovered the name of it, I now hear it everywhere. I have been cringing for many months now. It seems like half of all women do this. It's (supposedly) considered sexy or authoritative, I guess. Now they are hiring female narrators and voice actors that do it, for commercials and such, as if it's advantageous to advertising... Women all over TV are speaking like this... Someone help us before we all die from the cringe!

    • @mgal6234
      @mgal6234 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flawless Strategy I agree on all points...but if the Kardashians are doing it, it’s going to become a cultural phenomenon most likely. And it has. How anyone can say it’s a feminist issue is...beyond my comprehension. Hearing it is absolutely horrid and I cannot UNhear it. I almost have to walk away and I have asked “are you ill” before. It is also the sound of an opioid abuser, because opioids constrict the vocal cords, producing the same effect. Junkie voice. Except junkies have it all the time, not just the end of their sentences. No offense to addicts, I am a former addict.

    Vocal fry almost always occurs at the end of the sentence . Often the sentence starts high and ends low with the fry at the end . I just think what are you doing that for . It sounds rediculous

    • @StephanieBonteLebair
      @StephanieBonteLebair 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep! That's correct. Most people don't support all the way to the end which is why they have fry at the ends of the sentence. Vocal fry does sound ridiculous, so true.

      4 years later and I'm hearing vocal fry throughout entire phrases from women in their teens, twenties, and thirties. More prominent with younger women, in addition to vocal fry, is a peculiar lack of articulation that sounds similar to a toddler that's half asleep. It's tough to listen to, though it is my job.
