Here is part two of my time trimming our horses and mules. In total, we completed 307 animals. You may see some techniques in this video that you have not seen before. This is the best and safest way for us to teach these animals and not have anyone get hurt. Between Jimmy, Matthias and Myself we have lot of experience with these animals. If you haven't seen "Part 1" I have linked it below. Tha...

Glad to see you posting another video, hope there’s more to come!
It was a great year for rain this summer. It’s always awesome not having to pack in feed.
I like how you made those nice plywood hard panniers. Do you find they are pretty strong getting banged around into trees? And are they pretty heavy or light?
Yeah they are pretty strong and will take a beating for sure. The sides are thinner play than the floor to help make them a little lighter but not weak. I’m sure they arnt as light as plastic boxes but they arnt heavy by any means. And they hold plenty
Awesome, thanks. I think I’ll make a pair .
Enjoyed. Have missed your videos.
BEAUTIFUL country. Wish I could see it in person.
That's a nice pasture. Saddle rack belongs in a picture it's so perfect.
Yeah there was a few more nice meadows like that on our way up. But this one had water right close and good shelter from the wind. I’m Sure there’s other spots up there we just hadn’t been that way before and this was the spot we decided to set up at.
He’s back!
Haha not really mate. Unfortunately I don’t get to make videos very often these days sorry
That's some beautiful country
The best how to video out there hands down on how to properly pack mules and store everything! Thanks for sharing
So easy to follow along, really helped me buff the rust off on my packing skills
🙏❤️🇧🇪🐴👋
Good video. What feed do yall feed your mule? Just the hay cubes?
Because of our location we weren’t allowed to pack in hay bales so they were on alfalfa cubes. Just have to be careful with em and water em down and keep em well fed so they don’t eat em too fast. At least that’s what I found. They were on hay bales in town
Mitch Great video, how long is your basket rope? 80 to 100 feet total? or maybe 70 feet. A decker basket rope is 35 feet.
Yeah 70 feet mate. 35 a side
What experience did you have before working here?
Close to zero mate. I had never packed before and very basic riding
@@mitchandrew9910 are you still working there?
@@TheRobertsonLifenah mate. I finished there at the end of 2020
Wondering what are the dimensions of your wood boxes?
The boxes in this video are roughly 18.5 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 25.5 inches long. But these boxes specifically were only that wide to fit a carton of beer nice and snug so it didn’t slide around. (We had others built to the width of a case of wine). I’d say the length is close to the plastic panniers that you can buy and the hight would be similar too. Having wider boxes like this definatly opens up options for what they can be used for.
@@mitchandrew9910thank you sir!
How long are your basket ropes?
I’m having a hard time remembering exactly. But I’m pretty certain the total length is 55 feet. There’s total length, as the left and right ropes are one length and tied in the cloves hitch in the middle. 55 feet is excessive for most packs. But better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
@@mitchandrew9910 Thanks, that’s about what I would have guessed. Maybe 25’ per side. I’m packing down into elk hunting camp next week. I’m gonna use some of your methods!
Good stuff mate. Yeah it’s been a while since I’ve rigged up a saddle so I could have that length mixed up with the lash rope length. But I don’t think it’s far off
BY FAR THE BEST MOST COMPREHENSIVE PACK VIDEO!!! I am a novice packer, and this video is incredibly helpful! Thanks for taking the time to make and explain how to properly pack!
Thanks mate I appreciate that. There’s lots of ways to pack. I’m sure some are better. This works great for me
Excellent tips, thank you.
I thought this was about training young mules, it's all focused on you.
I’d love to hear about what make of pack saddles are working for you guys? Or which pack saddles are your favorite. Also, any other gear that’s working for you. Are you guys wearing lace up packer boots? Or cowboy boots? Looks like water and mud are an issue to contend with
I couldn’t tell you what brands of saddles they are mate. When I worked at this place we had about 70 miles and about 90 pack saddles all different and every season we just fit each mule with what worked best. My favourite though is any with classic wood bucks. Although at the end of the day I find they all pack the same. Ride in cowboy boots. No rules to what Ya walk around in. If it’s muddy and you want to wear muck boots go ahead. Goal is to not get off till I get to camp once I get on.
I should be working with some pack horses today, but it’s raining and I’m watching your videos! Thanks for taking the time to put them on here.
Thanks for posting these videos. I really enjoy seeing the country, stock and how you pack.
Hello Mitch, how do you book a trail ride like this. Awesome
Hey mate. The best way if you wanna book at this place specifically is to go onto www.horseback.com
Thank you for sharing 🐴.
He knows how. Most excellent. Been years since I have used a diamond hitch.
is this at Banff trail riders?!
Yes
Great video. SImplicity is the best part. Great job
how long is the rope on your lash cinch? great video, thanks...
70 feet but that is excessive if you don’t pack unusually large packs somtimes. But it is nice to have the extra rope and it really doesn’t hurt to have it there
Beautiful country ..... even if a bit wet. Would have loved riding up there. We were supposed to go to Banff this past July but had to cancel due to health. Should have headed that way when I got out of the military. Thank you for sharing.
I've been on a few trips into the Wilmore with Pete McMahon, he showed me how to pack a few times, but he went so fast it was hard to follow..Would love a chance to get out again...
WHEN I SEE THE GREAT EARTH LIKE THIS I KNOW GOD WILL RETURN AS A HUMAN BEING
PARADISE
Beautiful scenery. I would love to do something like this in the future.
lots of work!
Great video Mitch. I was wondering when you packed that fuel did you set your basket hitch up under the tarp and then proceed as you normally would?
Yeah mate that’s exactly right. Set your basket hitch up. Then lay the tarp in. Wrap you load in the tarp and it acts as an extra basket. Works great for small packages like the jerry cans. It’s also how I would usually pack fire wood but instead of a basket hitch I would use a barrel hitch
Great video that was defiantly helpful for future packing. Just curious how long is your lash rope? 50 foot?
Yeah mate 55foot is a good length for most packs. If you’re getting into some bigger packs 70 feet is nice to have. You can always clip up extra rope but it’s a pain if you don’t have enough
thanks sir. I could tell you were an Aussie just transplanted to CA
Haha yep you nailed it
Mitch, I'm very interested in doing a pack trip with my family. How do I get info on signing up for something like this? great video btw.
Hey mate. The best way to find out more is to visit www.horseback.com. I don’t work there anymore but I would recommend a 4 or 6 day trip
Good stuff
How does one get a job like this? It's through a national park so did you volunteer? I'd really like to participate in something like this!
It’s in a national park but it’s a company within the park. If you are in Canada or able to work in Canada now is the perfect time to enquire about applying.
If you are in the U S the SW (Gila Wilderness, NM) is a great place to start. The forestry hires seasonal help for trail work ect.. May be a start.
I like your method of packing feed bags.
Thanks mate. Works flowery well for us. We pack a few hundred bags a week so we’ve got it worked out
You moved right through packing those mules
Great. Looks like fun
I was a professional sewage worker for many years in Alaska. You guys are pretty darn efficient in my opinion. Was the trail you used to snowmobile out the barrels the same trail that the mules brought in stuff?
Yeah mate mostly the same trail. I few changes because the mule trail gets a little hairy in some parts for the skidoos
Thanks Mitch, very informative.
Great packing video, learned a couple new things. I like how you tied the ropes up, but the diamond I use is quicker to tie.
Bloody good video mate!
Thanks mate glad you liked it
What’s easier to break in, a horse or a mule, I’ve no experience with miles at all
I think it changes for every animal mate
Tell Erica, Santa and Barb say hi
Will do
