I think what you're hearing with steve's vocals that you described as a little off, weird, but good is microtones. His vibrato and where he starts a note is often a little sharp or flat, or his vibrato on the top or bottom is in key while the bends dip higher or lower than the note, compared to most people's vibrato which goes above and below the note equally. He's just got that indescribable soul in his voice which I think boils down to the fact he is more relaxed on tuning his voice and leaving in the little microtonal colours. He also chooses very purposefully when to use vibrato, how much, and what kind. His note changes are like that too. Just a little more conscious than everyone else I feel like.

He's not actually in jail. He's grown up with mental issues and its like he's in a prison within his own mind. He's trying to work shit out by mentally killing off all the voices in his head. He fails and has to accept that the voices are part of him and make peace with that. Once he understands that, the door to his "prison" opens. This is part 2 of a 6 part video story. Prequel, Voices in my Head, Popular Monster, Ronald, Watch the World Burn and Last Resort. The super quick explanation is that he is a super powered savior type from another reality who dies after being betrayed and resurrects in our reality. He doesn't really remember who he was before, and is plagued by weird memories and shit that make him think he's insane. He ends up in trouble with the law, and during his court appearance one of his previous super powers manifests, turning him into a rage monster. He kills everyone, tries to see a therapist (because he thinks he's insane and none of this can be real) who turns him in to the police, then ends up turning into the monster again and kills the cops. He gets captured but breaks free while being transported aboard a SWAT van. He kills the cops (again) and then escapes, being pursued through the city by various groups. He is caught by some weirdo occultists who perform a ritual on him, trying to steal his powers. The ritual backfires and restores most of his powers and memories. He escapes again and has to deal with a robot and an armed helicopter. He turns back into the rage monster and attacks the helicopter, causing it to crash. He is killed and wakes up in Purgatory, confronted by a divine entity that restores his powers, memories and life, then sends him to hell to fight a demon. After defeating the demon, he returns to the world and becomes a super powered savior (again, just like he was in his previous life.) He tries to save humanity and we get to see him prevent a nuke from being dropped on a city. The elites of society are jealous and fearful of him and try to discredit him and make him look like a bad guy. He confronts part of his own conscience within his mind, wondering how to deal with it all but the mental alter ego has no interest in that, sending him back out of his thoughts to take action. He gets an idea about how to proceed, and goes to a church that is totally opposed to him, thinking he's the anti-Christ or something. He tries to talk to the people there, but they won't listen and the priest attempts an exorcism on him. Realizing that this is the exact same shit that got him killed in his last life (in the video for the song "Prequel") he decides he's had enough. If they think he's the villain, then by all means he will show them what a villain really looks like. He sets the priest on fire and kills everyone in the church, then goes super saiyan, setting the world on fire. Finally, he wanders through the ruins of the world he destroyed, reflecting on his life, his loneliness and his mistakes. In the end he chooses to use his powers to restore and heal the world.
