    That’s a really informative video, thank you. I’m on the verge of moving from a D610 to mirrorless, and have an occasional use for close up environmental portraits and was looking at the 40mm. Like you, I’ve been coming across conflicting accounts, for which you’ve given a clear and reasonable, evidenced explanation, thank you. I think I’ll be passing on the 40 f/2 and will just come at that area in a different way with the longer primes that are on my list. I’ve watched a few of your videos and really like your style and your acknowledgement of confirmation bias - unique in all the reviews and comments I’ve seen. Cheers!

      Hey Fink, many thanks for your thoughtful comments. I think pretty much all products have pros and cons and it’s our preferences and tolerance to flaws that determine whether a product is right for us. A review should hopefully surface the strengths and weaknesses and then the user of the review can determine if they’re happy with a given set of compromises for their use case. I try to overcome my initial biases and preferences to look at the range of pros and cons. I’m very happy you find value in my approach. Thanks again!

    Hello sir, i have z6 ii, prime S lenses and z fc. I want a light kit z fc and 2 lenses to carry everyday with me. I have sigma 56 1.4 and I am torn between 24 1.7 and 28 2.8. I am afraid that would not be satisfied with the picture quality(sharpness, ghosting and flaring). Sigma 56 1.4 is on par in almost every situations with nikon S lenses. May you help me with advice, in my city there is no local store, so I everything i bought is based on charts and reviews...🙏🏻

    Enjoyed your video. Appreciate especially the section on you sharing on your journey to making this ultra wide view work for you. By the way, noticed that in recent videos you also use the Nikon crop sensor camera. In your opinion, it is worth to scratch the itch to migrate from olympus micro 4/3 to Nikon crop sensor? (As weight and size comparable in my opinion). Thank you.

      @jonneave 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Ink, thanks very much for checking out the video. It’s been over a year and I think I’m still on that ultra wide journey! I do have both Nikon and micro four thirds gear. And I have both full frame and APSC Nikon bodies. I have found the autofocus on the fairly entry level Nikon crop bodies to be a bit easier to find and stay focused on subjects than my latest Olympus body which is the E-M1 iii. I have been shooting my kids skiing, mountain biking, playing soccer and softball with my ZFc and 50-250 when i want to go light. I have a couple of PL lens (50-200 & 100-400) which I’d love to use on a better AF performing micro four thirds body. And to that end, I’ve noticed that the O-M1.1 has dropped significantly since the mk 2 was released so I put an order in for that body which should arrive soon! I’m hoping the AF is a step up from my E-M1 iii and Nikon crop bodies and goes some way to closing the gap to that of my Z8….lets see! Thanks again for checking out the video.

    As someone has already mentioned you can't really get a 24-70 f/4 S for the price of the 28mm f/2.8 S, used or otherwise. I'm currently seeing a difference of $200 for used from reputable dealers. I have the 14-30 S. I have the 24-70 S. I love them both but even though they are small for what they are, they are often too big for casual carry. And my 70-200 f/2.8 certainly is. So how do you go super small and super light? Well, Nikon gives you those options with the 40 f/2, the 28 f/2.8 and the 26 f/2.8 (which unlike the other two is not cheap at all). I don't think it is practical to compare them with fast high end expensive primes. I don't even think it is practical to compare them to fast cheap Chinese primes. None of these are small and light. And I think that is the take home story here. Anyone expecting sub $300, small, lightweight primes to perform in the same way as large expensive primes is not being realistic. Small and light can be an extremely important aspects of a lens and that is going to come at a cost. Especially when you add 'cheap' to that formula. The adage about tripods comes to mind: Cheap. Light. Strong. You get to pick two of those. I already have the 40mm f2. I have no delusions about it. I have three S level lenses to compare it to. But I find it to be one of my favorite lenses. Likewise, at the next opportunity I will pick up a used 28 f2.8. I expect similar utility from it. These lenses turn a Z7 nearly into a compact camera. THAT is their magic.

It is a tiny bit larger and heavier. Not quite as fast but only $158! If it is no worse than the Nikkor it would be a compelling buy over the 40mm f/2. I am a bit late watching this but if you are just processing the ORFs using the JPEG settings at the time of capture, and passing them straight through OMW without editing, and exporting a JPEG, why not just shoot JPEG+RAW in the first place and import the JPEGs to LR. What am I missing?

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Dunk. Thanks for checking out the video. This process allows you to select JPEG settings/develop the RAW on your computer like other RAW development apps. But it hands off the processing back to the camera’s processor to speed up the RAW processing rather than relying on the computer’s processor. Does that better explain it? Best.

    • @MrDunk66
      @MrDunk66 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jonneave Thanks Jon, I think I missed the point. I understand that you would do this if the in-camera JPEG settings were not right at the time of capture and needed reprocessing from the RAW. If the RAW processor can recover highlights and shadows, you wonder why these tools are not present in the camera. I guess we will see in-camera RAW processing equivalent to what can be done of the PC at some stage - as computing power seems to be increasing every iteration

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MrDunk66 Well as it happens a few camera brands allow you to process a RAW file in camera as many times and in as many ways as you like using the picture styles/picture controls that you’d select when typically shooting JPEG, using the cameras JPEG engine and saving the files to the memory card. Obviously this isn’t as flexible as a standalone editor but being able to process a RAW file in the camera a few different ways (eg flat, vivid, monotone) can be helpful when you dont have access to a computer but dont want to initially capture a JPEG. And some brands allow picture-style bracketing - think exposure bracketing but instead of adjusting the exposure automatically, you’re applying every picture style to the RAW and saving all of those files to the memory card. This could be useful in say high contrast situations for instance when having a range of styles to chose from might be helpful. Thanks again for checking out the video.

    I bought this lens almost as soon as I went mirrorless with a Z7. It is small, cheap and fast. And there really isn't anything comparable that is also small, cheap and fast. I'm not sure what more really needs to be said. It stays on my Z7 most of the time because when it is on there I'm much more likely to pick it up and take it with me compared to my larger S lenses. I'm not a pixel peeper or a measure-bater so the perceived weaknesses of this lens have never been an issue for me. I have had no focus issues. Given its readily apparent limitations (cheap, light, simple design) I find this to be one of my favorite lenses. For potential buyers: Don't overthink it. Find a used one, get it, use it , enjoy it and remember if it were small, fast and perfect you probably wouldn't be able to afford it.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey George, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I think for many/most people your sentiments ring true. Others may frequently shoot in a style that runs into the limitations of the lens (eg portraits, wide open & close up) and will end up disappointed. I can understand the views of both camps. Thanks again.

    • @georgebarronjr
      @georgebarronjr 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jonneave Agreed. My point is that it seems that this level of disappointment is disproportionate to the cost and design of the lens (plastic mount, six elements!). One wonders what those folks were expecting for $226 (US), new. Anyway, I appreciate the thorough review but I also think reviewers need to keep things in context. I would reference Christopher Frost's balanced review of the lens which is generally positive and concludes: "There's not much more you can ask from of lens of this price point."

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey George, thanks for the thoughts. I feel I explained the pros and the cons of the lens as I see them. I like Chris Frost though he is often reviewing a lens that he only has for a short while. I think this must preclude anyone from really knowing a lens the way you do if you shoot a lens over a longer period of time. I’m very much a longer focal length shooter and if I’m shooting wide, I am generally up close on my subject with the aperture wide open. When you take pictures in this manner with the 40mm f2, especially portraits, there are significant limitations. Is this unreasonable for a $300 lens, you’d have to answer that within your reference frame of value and priorities. When I initially bought the lens, I shot it a few times and thought it was disappointing. If you only shoot close up wide open, I think it would not be good value at any price. When, a year later, I used the lens further for other roles, it performs quite nicely. I think my review speaks to the overall performance of the lens and doesn’t seek to prioritize one use case over another, as I know folks have different preferences. But it’s all good that we have different preferences, priorities, perception of value and of balance. I appreciate your thoughts.

    • @georgebarronjr
      @georgebarronjr 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jonneave I think 10 years ago complaining about the performance of a $300 lens would be perfectly legit. Now, not so much since there is literally no other option for a lens of similar size for that price, which, by the way, is now $226, not $300. The ancient comparable F lens is the AF 50mm 1.8 is now $130! The AF-S version is $200. When someone, maybe Sigma, maybe a Chinese company, comes out with a small light cheap fast 40mm that outperforms it, then we'd have something to compare it to. Until then, comparing it to a faster, heavier, sharper and more expensive lens is like comparing a Miata to a Ferrari. I like your reviews but if they lack context then they run the risk of lacking real world application. Would I recommend it for someone who only shoots up close and wide open? Of course not. But I would wonder why they expected such a lens to do so to begin with.

    Excellent video. Gets right to the heart of the issues which need to be considered when contemplating buying this lens. I am looking to expand my kit, but I have 3 Nikon zoom lenses which cover the range from 14mm to 400mm. The 1-stop difference between f4 and f2.8 is not a good tradeoff for loss in image quality. I had been considering both this lens, and the 40mm f2, and as a result of your videos decided not to spend my money on either of them. If I am going to stick prime lens in the middle of my available zoom range, I want it to be blazingly sharp and fast.

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hey Alan, thanks for taking the time to comment and for the kind feedback. I’d guessing you have the 14-30, 24-120 (or 24-70) and 100-400? There’s definitely a trade off in size and speed between the zooms and the muffins but with the 24-70 in particular, I find the flexibility of the zoom more appealing than the smaller size of the 28mm and its one stop advantage. The 40mm does give you a couple of stops which is very useful in low light but the close up wide open performance is not good. That said, it’s nice Nikon has given us a number of options at different price points. Thanks again.

      Thanks Jon. I was finding it sticking the same way you mentioned in the video on the V1. Basically just requiring perfect alignment. • @jonneave
      @jonneave 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ah, I follow! The plates that attach to a tripod are definitely tight just like the v1 backpack clip. I understand why this is but it can be awkward. I think I recently saw a glimpse of a video where the F38 plates would push down into the base rather than slide in. That way you get the benefit of a tight interface but without having to take undue care lining things up. I hope they release this type of base soon. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

      Hi James. I used to the own the 40-150 f2.8 pro lens. It’s a really nice lens. It bigger than the PL 50-200 and obviously shorter in reach, but has a fixed aperture across the focal range. I liked it a lot and was very happy to shoot it wide open at any focal length. I’m not a fan of teleconverters. I’ve had three 1.4x converters (EF, Olympus, Z Mount) and never found them useful. They decrease resolution and light gathering for little tangible benefit. Cropping the image is a cheaper way of getting to the same place while retaining a stop of light. YMMV. TH-cam review motivations are (generally) based on monetary motivations where forums are not. I tend to trust a more balanced view from the forums but enjoy the visuals of YT reviews, I just take that into consideration when watching a review. I think you pointed out the strengths and weaknesses well. I find it fills a spot in my bag that another lens doesn’t, small, light, cheap. The 50mm 1.8S fills a different spot. I don’t expect them to fill the same spot. I do wish the 40mm wasn’t so void of character in build, it’s purely aesthetics but I found I really liked the SE version better. Also, I don’t like not having a MF/AF switch but immediate MF override works so smoothly on that lens I find it doesn’t need the switch. The override on the SE version (to me) is far superior to the non-SE version. Great video.

      Hey Scott, thanks for checking out the video and for your thoughtful comment. I am not getting compensated for any of my reviews. I approach them from a perspective of what would I have wanted to know before I bought the product. Naturally, somethings are relevant to some individuals and not to others but I try to pull out the spectrum of pros and cons so people can make their own assessment of whether the product is appropriate for them. Thanks again.

    If and when Nikon releases a pro or semi-pro DX camera body, especially with a battery grip, this Tamron lens would fit like a hand in a glove with this DX camera body.

      @jonneave หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, the extra ‘reach’ with the DX crop works well with the Tamron. A full D500 mirrorless successor would make a lot of people happy, though I’d largely be content with an upgraded Z50 body with an Exspeed 7 processor. IBIS would be nice but not a deal breaker for me. Thanks for checking out the video and fingers crossed for some new DX bodies!

    great work. however, I think that the distance is playing its part in the test results. The longer the distance the larger the risk of getting unsharp images due to the air inbetween having (slightly) different temperatures dependent on what the surface beneath consists of (water, stone, wood, etc. and shadow and sunny areas). This will somehow "bend" the light beams ever so slightly and will give you not the sharpness that you would probably get in a lab controlled environment. Of course, this affects every lens. But one can argue that from a budget lens one doesn't expect it to be tack sharp while one finds a premium lens rather "soft" in these situations. I would say that (probably due to the distance) the best possible image quality one could get in these circumstances is worse than what a top lens could produce in top conditions. Hence, the difference between the lenses is still visable (because of different qualities of the lenses) yet much less than one might expect. Probably you should repeat the tests with subjects much closer and / or when its cloudy, so when the air between you and the subject is evenly "heated". Just my thoughts. But good work, anyway!

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there, thanks very much for the thoughtful comment. I did the test a couple of times and with multiple photos on each lens/aperture/focal length in short order to control for the impact of atmospherics. Plus it was very cold which does somewhat limit those impacts. But I think you’re right that a shorter distance would be informative and better control for atmospherics. Maybe I’ll grab the 50-200 and one of the other telephotos are see how they perform at a 20-40m range. Stay tuned and thanks again for the feedback!

    Excellent review, the best I’ve seen on this lens. I’m about to upgrade from the D850 to the Z8. I have used the Tamron 100-400 but have been especially unhappy with its autofocus speed. I’ve been debating about whether I should move to the Tamron 150-500. Some mixed reviews raised concerns which you have allayed with your review. I’m now much more positive about this lens vs the Nikon 180-600. That lens is impressive, but its size made me pause, as I felt I would be less likely to take it out vs. the smaller and somewhat lighter Tamron

    • @jonneave
      @jonneave หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Eric, many thanks for your kind words. I had the F mount Tamron 100-400 and I’ve taken some nice photos with it. But the 150-500 is faster at focusing and is sharper than that old 100-400. I would guess the Nikon 180-600 is a bit sharper and has better VR than the 150-500 but for the price and the size I’m very happy with it. In the last 2 weeks I’ve taken it to 3 softball matches and 2 soccer matches that my kids have played in. I’m not sure I would’ve reached for the 180-600 quite as readily based on its size. Good luck with your search.

      Hey Owii, thanks for checking out the video. That is an interesting question. I’d say unless you ‘really’ love the 35mm focal length, I think the 40m with a small crop gets you much of the same look. If you’re after a step up in quality and demand the specific look of 35mm then the 35mm f1.8 is likely your best option, but it’s obviously at a cost. I dont own the 35mm f1.8 as I broadly have it covered between the 40mm f2 and the 24-70 f2.8 but some folks absolutely cherish a 35mm prime. Good luck!

    It is so sad that didn't see this video before I bought it yesterday... Luckily it was second-hand and maybe I will resell it further. I bought it as simple backup lens if my main f2.8 zoom lens fail, or I will need an extra stop of light. But I'm struggling to get sharp portraits indoors. Even tried in camera focus tuning, no luck.Tried on FX Z5 and DX Z30. It not only misses focus, but also the "in-focus" is SOFT! on f2. I do not need a lens with "f2" that I must use only on f4... I could expect this from various 3rd party chinese lenses, but not from Nikon itself... suppose Viltrox 50mm f1.8 for the same price would be even better, but I went for name and size. Sadly, but seems most reviews are sponsored or they do not test it in low light conditions where this (or any other f2) lens should be used....

      Hey IG, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I had the same feeling about the lens when I bought it. I think people that shoot general/street/group photography are generally very pleased with the lens. But those folks who shoot indoor portraits and need the maximum aperture will be left scratching their heads. I suspect most reviewers only have the lens for a short period of time. I'm not sure they are disingenuous but you can totally miss certain attributes if you don't spend much time with a lens and have a preferred style of shooting. I don't think it's a focus calibration/copy issue as there are a number of reports in the forums about this issue. I'm sorry you've had a poor experience.

      Hey Martin, thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to comment. I’m sure the Z8 has better AF overall than the Z6 I or II, though I’ve used the lens on my ZFc and it worked well. The focusing processes on the ZFc qre very similar to the other non flagship camera bodies and it’s important to choose the appropriate focus mode for the intended subject. I often used wide area Large as it directs the camera to focus on just a small part of the frame. What type of subjects are you shooting and what focus modes are you using? Thanks again.
