The mission of Community Concerts at Second is to enrich the Baltimore community by presenting free professional musical performances of lasting artistic value.
Margaret L. Budd, Organist: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor (Bach)
This recording is the first track on Margaret Budd's 1996 album recorded at Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, Maryland.
Margaret was a highly-accomplished performer and scholar. Here are her liner notes for this track:
"Representative of the Baroque era's almost Dionysian vitality are its many works for the pipe organ, and of these J. S. Bach's stand at the forefront. Arguably his most well known work, the Toccata and Fugue in D minor is characteristic: dramatic, theatrical, profuse, overwhelming. The design aspires to the spontaneous, and the soundscape, almost romantic in conception, is passion incarnate."
ABOUT MARGARET BUDD
Margaret Lothrop Budd was the Founder of Community Concerts at Second and was the organist for Second Presbyterian Church for 32 years (from 1972 to 2004). She was a native of Evanston, Illinois and studied with Grigg Fountain at Oberlin University and with Thomas Matthews at Northwestern University School of Music, where she earned her Master’s degree in Organ Performance and Church Music with highest honors, including Pi Kappa Lambda. She was granted a Fulbright Scholarship for organ study in Europe.
She performed to acclaim throughout the Chicago area, the East Coast, and Europe. Highlights of the European tours include performances at the 1988 International Church Music Conference in Geneva and a 1992 church service at St. Thomas, J.S. Bach’s church in Leipzig. She accompanied the Second Presbyterian choir to England in 1994, serving as organist-in-residence for a week at Gloucester Cathedral.
An Associate by examination in the American Guild of Organists, Ms. Budd served on various national committees, co-founded the North Shore, Illinois AGO Chapter and is past Dean of the Baltimore Chapter. Local organ lovers will remember her as a regular participant in the annual Bach Marathon.

THE ANTHEM
Just attended her concert in Pasadena (Tchaikovsky's Concerto 1). . .her passion and joy for doing what she does was so obvious (and infectious). Wonderful pianist.
What is the repertory played?
Is there a recreational adult choir that the public can audition for?
Sparkling! Sparkling in the Shostakovich #1 and in the Schubert G major, and in the unique and unfamiliar short works in between these anchors.

beautiful!
What is the first encore?
THank you so much!!! Unbelievable technique and artistic expression! Reinds me so much of Horowitz (especially the encore piece which Horowitz often played). Inspiring concert
Beautiful, brought me to tears. I sang with the MSU choir for a few years and left at covid to run @hbwallst but ive been trying to make my way home ever since. Sending Love to Dr. Conway and the whole Community.
Great!
