ECE 165 - Lecture 3: The Inverter and MOS Transistor Theory (2021)
Lecture 3 in UCSD's Digital Integrated Circuit Design class. Here we cover how to build the most basic building block in a digital circuit: the inverter. We start by reviewing the basic CMOS transistor behavior equations, then build a voltage transfer curve and discuss noise margin. We finish by discussing other important transistor non-idealities like subthreshold conduction, the body effect, channel length modulation, velocity saturation and mobility degradation, gate leakage, DIBL, and more.

ECE203 - Lecture 17: Transcutaneous Wireless Power Transfer
Lecture 17 in UCSD's Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems course. In this lecture we introduce the basics of wireless power transfer for the purposes of performing powering or wireless charging of biomedical implants. We start by discuss some history via Tesla, Raytheon, and Cochlear Implants, and then get into technical discussions about loosely coupled transformer models. We use reflect...
ECE 203 - Lecture 16: Low-Power Voltage, Current, and Timing References
Lecture 16 in UCSD's course on Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems. In this lecture we cover the basics of how to build voltage reference generators and current reference generators to bias amplifiers and other analog components. We start with some simple concepts and build up towards bandgap references. Then we discuss how to operate such circuits at low voltage and low power levels. We...
ECE 203 - Lecture 14: Electrochemical Biosensors
Lecture 14 in UCSD's class on biomedical integrated circuits and systems. In this lecture we describe another class of sensor interfaces that are finding increasing interest in the wearables market - the ability to measure physiochemical parameters is of high interest. In this lecture we will very briefly review the very basics of electrochemistry, and then dive into how to build circuits for p...
ECE203 - Lecture 13: Phototransduction
Lecture 13 in UCSD's Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems course. This lecture first discusses how biology performs phototransduction in the human retina, including a brief discussion about natural gain adaptation. Then, we introduce how to perform phototransduction using silicon pn-junctions, and introduce circuit techniques to make a bio-inspired silicon photoreceptor.
ECE203 - Lecture 12: Low-Power ADCs
Lecture 12 in UCSD's biomedical integrated circuits and systems course. In this lecture we introduce the concept of analog to digital converters, and briefly discuss where they fit in to typical biomedical systems. Then, we discuss several common ADC structures such as flash, pipeline, and SAR. We conclude with some brief remarks on how to make a SAR ADC energy efficient.
ECE203 - Lecture 11 - Low-Power Digital Design
Lecture 11 in UCSD's ECE203 course on biomedical integrated circuits and systems. Covers the very basics of digital design, with an emphasis on how operating at low-voltages, possibly even into the subthreshold regime, can enable significant energy savings. We derive switching energy, subthreshold leakage power and its corresponding energy per cycle, and then show how these two trade-off to for...

ECE 203 - Lecture 9: Instrumentation Amplifiers II
This is lecture 9 in UCSD's Biomedical Integrated Circuits and Systems class, which is the second lecture on instrumentation amplifiers. Here, we begin by exploring different ways to build very large effective resistors through MOS-bipolar pseudoresistor concepts, along with switched-capacitor and switched-resistor resistances. Then, we discuss how to build an OTA-based instrumentation amplifie...
ECE 203 - Lecture 8 - Instrumentation Amplifiers I
This video is the first of three videos discussing the design of instrumentation amplifiers for biomedical applications. In this lecture we will first define some of the requirements in terms of input impedance, noise, gain, bandwidth, CMRR, and so on, and then discuss possible op-amp based options.
ECE 203 - Lecture 7: ECGs and an Electrical Model of the Heart
This lecture will discuss the mechanical and electrophysiological operation of the human heart, showing how individual cardiomyocytes change depolarize (through calculation of Nernst potentials) during a heartbeat, and how the vector summation of these charges ultimately produce the ECG (or EKG) waveforms. We will then student the instrumentation requirements to measure ECG/EKG waveforms on the...
ECE 203 - Lecture 6: Noise
This lecture will discuss the basics of noise in subthreshold transistors and other circuit elements. We will then discuss steps on how to compute total integrated noise, and input referred noise.
ECE 203 - Lecture 5: Basic CMOS Building Blocks III
In this video we wrap up our discussion on basic CMOS building blocks - always with an emphasis on subthreshold operation for the purposes of this course. We start by introducing the concept of translinear analysis, and then discuss the design of subthreshold differential amplifiers, including ones with a fully differential output, and ones with a single-ended output. We introduce the linear ra...
ECE 203 - Lecture 4 - Basic CMOS Building Blocks II
In this lecture we continue our discussion of basic building blocks in CMOS, with a specific emphasis on the subthreshold mode of operation. We discuss a source follower (common drain amplifier), a common gate amplifier, differential pairs, and current mirrors.
