Sportster Dirt Bike Ride and Diagnostics
Figuring out what parts to change/adjust on the 1998 Sportster XL1200C Dirt Bike (in collaboration with Craig Johnson of cjdesignsllc.com/ ) :
Clutch remains 20-30% engaged with the lever completely pulled. A little stall happy as a result when at slow speeds in the woods, and makes finding neutral challenging.
Short open pipe from Gallop is cool to listen to but too loud to use in a group ride, and the lack of backpressure may be contributing to the stalls.
Solenoid is partially obstructed by the high pipes making starting the bike a hazardous endeavor when the engine's been running and the headers hot.
Foot pegs could be two inches lower and further back for riding ergos.
Due to the tall suspension and heavy engine/frame, the bike holds its weight very high and is a challenge to pick up when tipped over
In terms of power, the stock XL1200C engine isn't lacking any, even if it's only 50-60ish HP, the torque is up front and very useable.
To Do List:
1. Add a handlebar start button
2. Adjust the clutch
I'm looking into possibly adding a hydraulic clutch kit and/or Rekluse parts
3. Add a quieter exhaust
Bike sounds great when I'm riding it but is sinfully loud to everyone else, be it other riders or wildlife.
4. Ergonomic Changes
Drop the chassis by 1-2 inches in the front forms, adjusting the handlebars, adding a taller seat to lengthen foot to butt and handlebar to foot distances.
5. Other quality of life changes
Crash protection
Grab bars for easier lifts
Oil Cooler
Low slung aux tanks (stock tank only holds 2-2.5 gallons)
Electronics workup (turn signals, tail light, GPS harness, 3-D printed saddle extensions for legs to grip on to.

In OTHER news... here's what the 1998 Harley Davidson Sportster XL1200C Dirt Bike that Chris M. built sounds like. It's a hilariously loud bike that is deceptively mild mannered with power delivery. Some refinements to the exhaust and controls will undoubtedly improve the handling. That, and time in the saddle.

This video was actually from before the previous flooded street clip. The storm clouds were so thick that the afternoon sun was completely blotted out. Tractionator Desert H/Ts actually tracked very well in the wet. Rain was hitting me like pebbles, and despite the rain gear I was thoroughly soaked by the time I got off the interstate.

Thunderstorm hit Madison Wisconsin. I'm very familiar with this stretch of road so I could tell at a glance that it wasn't deep enough to give me any trouble.

Ahmad's well practiced with taking race lines on his R6 normally, so this was an active effort to counter lean instead of knee drag and take the middle-middle-middle lines in the spirit of adv practice.

From Saturday's ride in Hill Point, WI, hosted by Southern Wisconsin Guided Trail Rides. A portion of the Saturday Southern Wisconsin Guided Trail Ride in Hillpoint, WI Ended up pairing up with Andrew as both of our bikes are 1. Heavy AF compared to proper dual sports and dirt bikes, and 2. Running on old tires with a noted grip deficiency. Definitely will have to spoon on a new rear knobbie next time, and maybe make it up some of the hills that I backed off of this time around.

Testing out the new Insta 360X3 on my 2017 BMW F700GS Weather was 15 degrees and I definitely felt it in the knees after 30 minutes of riding. Heated grips kept the dexterity in the hand though.

17" I didn't even know it was possible to get a 17" shock until I saw this bike on Facebook Marketplace. Previous owner worked for HD in Milwaukee and it looks like he knew what he was doing.

The bike carries it self surprisingly well as long as I don't come to a stop on a weird incline/turn.

It's the Gallop Flying Comet. I'm actually in the process of putting a quieter exhaust on the bike for OHM regulations so I'm open to selling this exhaust at a discount.

Nice off road bike! I had a chopped '75 sportster early '80s, it worked well off road. 6" over Frank's forks, hog wheel laced to a sportster hub but not the flat tread tire. I used a radius rear tire. S&S side draft carb.

@@greatpar Mechanix heat resistant gloves. Bike currently doesn't have a handlebar start button so I need to reach between the high pipes to press the solenoid, which is risky biscuits when the engine's been running.

You ain't riding it like a dirt bike. Nice build, i had a 72 ironhead made into a mx bike. It, too, was also registered for the road.
@@zacnicolai8125 the bike's clutch needs to be tweaked. Engagement is right at the handlebar and the bike was a bit stall happy when I took it in some single track, and that's with the clutch pulled.
@@gunsngunpla Best way to get it done right is to buy a manual for that Model and Years H- D Sportster. I have a 1989 Sporty and Manual, every thing is in Top working order. CV Carburetor work best for Stock to Mild Performance H-D EVOLUTION Sportster.

Daaaamn that thing is sooo sick! the external tensioner situation is super cool, I love how you used (what looks like) a primary chain tensioner on top of the swingarm. Very creative and versatile!
I've dreamed about a Harley-Davidson engine in a dirt bike frame for many years and it looks killer but probably cumbersome to ride not to mention probably pretty top heavy for a dirt bike but still, the cool factor is off the rails. I'd like to have one despite all of that.
There are some ergonomic quirks that'll need to be addressed if I were to take this into more serious off road situations. Wisconsin OHM (Off Highway Motorcycle) regulations has a 96Db sound limit when the bike is revved. This Dirtster idles in the 90s and hits 114Db when revved because of the short stubby open pipe. Going to slap a SuperTrapp on there to mute it, then do some clutch and brake work.

@@SirAwesome5auce Beretta's webstore sells really nice and relatively low profile +2 metal baseplates with Beretta logos for the 17 rounders. I have several of those and they work great.

How did you do the medallion on the grip. .
Acrylic paints from Tamiya and Amazon with a small brush and toothpicks 1. Base layer of gold onto the whole thing, then use the flat of an exacto knife to scrape away the paint on the raised edges to reveal the black circle rim and emblem. 2. Tiny brush or toothpick to brush on an underlayer of mirror chrome on the emblem. This 3. A coat of red on the chrome after it dries. The reason for the chrome is that the red paint is so thin that the black base of the gun can makes the final color darker.

How much does this cost?
This is what it cost me in parts and services on top of the base gun in 2019 when I did it. Prices have probably gone up: You can check with Middlebranch Machine for Titanium Nitride coating costs, but here's what it cost me back then: Gloss Gold for the barrel ($80) Matte Gold for decocker (2 parts), slide release and extractor ($15X4) Matte Black for slide ($80) Total: $220 Additional parts from Beretta: PX4 Fiber Optics sights ($109) PX4 Competition Trigger Group ($105) PX4 Steel Trigger ($55) PX4 Talon Grip ($20) From Langdon Tactical: Optimized Performance Trigger Bar (dramatically reduces trigger reset) ($75) Total: $364
People worry too much about how a thing looks over how well built and reliable it is. The thing is nearly perfect from the factory. Are these licensed Baretta parts? Will they hold up as good as the real deal. Waste of money.

My PX4 has a chrome lined barrel. Is the TiN only on the outside of the barrel?
The Gold TiN coating is throughout the barrel. It's 100% coverage.

In what way is Tin better than the original steel parts, It does look Prettier though.
You're right, this is strictly an aesthetics change. The original slide coating was very shiny and would look splotchy if I got oil and carbon on it. Going with flat black/gold on the slide and gloss gold on the barrel results in a cleaner look imo.
