Electric 4WD quad with BLDC hoverboard motors

Hi, Just found your video after meeting you in Hannover and test-driving the quad ( we were the guys from Luxemburg with the hoverboard trikes) Need to build one too now! Do you know which size of quad you used? Is it the 50ccm 105x60cm ones? Or larger?
@@DerFrickler Hi guys, nice to hear from you. I will take some measurements of the frame and post them here.

Badass!!
hello , please can i ask you? Which controller you use for motor of hoverboard. Do you have a specificataion or some link where you buy it? thanks.
For this project I used 4 generic 300 watt BLDC e-bike/scooter controllers from a Chinese supplier. For later projects I used the original motor controllers from the hoverboard with modified firmware : github.com/EFeru/hoverboard-firmware-hack-FOC/wiki/Variant-HOVERCAR
...EXELENTE....
Great work. Can you pls share me the full structural design of Frame / chassis with dimensions. i am planning for my kids . Pls share
This is a reclaimed mini quad, sorry in have no drawings
You can use 4.00-5 tyres. It's narrower but longer. 4 inches wide and 4 inches lap hight. Have 5 inc rim hole. It's cheaper also
I'm currently working on a project similar to yours, and i have a question. How did you solve the rear wheel differential?
Hello, every wheel is powered independently, the motors are in the wheels. Therefore there is no differential and it is also not needed because everery wheel can turn faster or slower than the others if needed.
@maakmeneer Oh, then does that mean even without any mathematical calculations for solving spin ratios for wheel differentials, the system will work fine?
@@user-sg7rg9oq1s yes, every wheel can spin faster or slower at any time, so calculations are not needed.
Какой диференциал при мотор колесах?!
@@АгентБублик there is indeed no differential needed with this design since every wheel is it's own motor

cool project does 4 motor connected paralel to one bldc controller
There are 4 bldc controllers connected to 1 throttle, one controller to 4 motors will not work.
Can u tell me about controller How much watt have in every controller You used 36v 350watt or 36v 500watt controller Please tell me Thank u
I used 4x 350w controller. You can also modify the firmware of the original controllers to re-use them with a throttle and brake. Take a look here if you are interested : github.com/EFeru/hoverboard-firmware-hack-FOC#hardware
@@maakmeneer thank u so much for your help I'm also trying to fix my eskateboard I used 2 hoverboard hub motor nd used 350controller but when i give throttle my controller automatically stop But I'll try until i get successful You are doing great work nd you have amazing brain full of knowledge
I have hoverboard motherboard but don't know how to use it by potentiometer
@@Madman7070 Do your controllers also have reverse? because I think they will not "freewheel" if they also can reverse. Not sure, but just a hunch
Also 1 controller on 2 motors will not work, especially if you also connected the hall sensors of both wheels.
I also tried to mount the hoverboard motors on those tyres, but when you inflate them they go out of the rim, they only work if they are very loose, does the same thing happen to you too?
I think you didn't use 5" tires or the motors are smaller
@@maakmeneercan you share motor an wheel size? I used 6,5" motors and 4x3,5 tires
@@fedemon76 I used 6,5 Inch hoverboard motors, but this size is with the standard solid rubber tires still in place. When these are removed the rims are only 5 inch. The tires I used are 4.10/3.50-5 but it i recommend to measure your rim size before getting the tires.
@@repareermeneer3853 I used the same tires but if I inflate strong tires goes out the rim
@@fedemon76 maybe your rims are smaller than the ones I used. I've converted several more wheels with the same tires and I can inflate them all to the max of 2 bars without any problems.
What esc are you using? It is controll all 4 wheel? Thanks
All 4 wheels are powered with Chinese e-bike/scooter controllers connected to the same throttle and brake switch in the brake handle. You could also use the stock controllers with modified firmware, but that takes some knowledge about electronics and programming.
Do you have a Link or somerhing? Were do you buyed the ESC?

sorry for the question my friend. are these new or used cells and are they original? samsung 25r or 30q style for example? I collect 200 to 300 dead power tool batteries per month...and I would like to know how to get myself a pack for my son's electric motocross. I saw that I could use a 36v or 48v bms and recharge them directly like that... I would like your opinion please.
Hello FredddH. These 18650 cells were taken from old e-bike batteries. They are indeed meant for large discharge currents just like the ones used in the powertool batteries you are talking about. Laptop cells for example are designed to hold their energy longer but because of their materials and construction they don't allow large discharge currents. Powertool cells are from a different material and are constructed somewhat different what allows them to have a larger discharge current but will shorten their charged state. When building these batteries I usually try to get the exact same type cells for the whole battery pack instead of mixing and matching different types. Every brand and type has their own internal resistance and a typical and maximum discharge/charge current. To rule out a path of least resistance across a certain path of cells of overloading them I don't try to mix and match. Create multiple paths for the current to flow across the battery pack and use good nickel strips with enough thickness for the currents you are requesting from it. The BMS will indeed handle the maximum charge and discharge voltage of the pack, some will even protect it against short circuit or overload.
wow you are a poet my friend. it is very well explain and I drink that you have done a lot of research on the issue of lithium batteries. If I understand you correctly the important thing is that each series of battery (cells) is of the same brand and model to respect its construction as much as possible. example the first series 5 cell 25r in the second 5 cell 30q ... etc for the question of the bms as a battery charger is what would prevent me from using small Opus or Xstar chargers. it's really long to test each cell individually....and for resistance is the type of four wire multimeter good for measuring resistance? had a great day you are completely awesome. Patrick from Canada
@@FredddH I did test every cell with an Opus charger, that's why I have 5 of them ;-) if you test multiple cells at the same time it's hard to really test them together because they will influence each other. It does take time, but it is for the best.
Thanks you my friend. You are awesome 👊👊 How i can send you a picture of my setup and battery. Can i send via TH-cam?
@@FredddH I'm not sure.
Do you have a reverse gear as well, or only moving forward?
Only forward for this one, though reverse shouldn't be a problem when the controllers support that
Top speed? 🤔
The top speed was about 35 km/h

Unfortunately we don't have any mountains or very steep hills in the Netherlands, so I don't have any experience on that performance. I will try and shoot some off-road performance videos once the weather improves a little.
@@maakmeneer Thank you. As the alternative way maybe some stairs with wood board or access ramp can be used. I am Vey excited to know the performance from it since i am also building one by hacking hovernoard Motherboard cards. I think yours is Very strong. Here in Brasil some guy was built an "Hexaciclo" (Alberto Tecnologia Chanel).
What tires did you use? 4.10/3.50-5? They are very rare and expensive. Will 11/4.00-5 fit? Thank you!!!
I indeed used 4.10/3.50-5 . They are quite expensive, I think because they are used in mobility scooters a lot and everything with the term "medical" is way overpriced if you ask me. You can find some from china but time has to be your friend ;-) I think the 11/4.00-5 will not fit because the rim size seems way larger. I can double-check tomorrow.
thats so cool, well done! what motors are you using
These are motors from old hoverboards. These are brushless dc (bldc) motors of about 300 watt each.
