    Isn’t 4.0 in High School is nothing since the Max is 5.0?

    • @premed_george
      @premed_george 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      there are two types of gpa in high school. Unweighted which the max is usually 4 and is the gpa people typically talk about. While weighted is calculated differently by each school and is used for class ranking purposes. For your school, the max may be 5 but mine it could go up to 6. Hope this helps:)

    I'm a medical fellow from a similar background to you. Congratulations on your GPA, it will pay off. Unfortunately the competition never stops, especially in the medical field. You'll continue to feel that you're needing to sacrifice parts of you to get ahead of the competition, and it is necessary at times. The key to balance is to be intentional when you carve out limited time/energy, and to spend it on things that are worth it such as quality friends, family, clubs, hobbies, or communities. Avoid the trap of wasting too much time on nonsense such as partying, drugs, and other vices just for the sake of FOMO.

    i really wish i was more social because i see myself as an introverted extrovert in a way. i love having friends and having people to hang out with and talking to people but i tend to be very reserved and quiet. i feel like I've never really made my own friends. all my friends i can think of now are through other people or it's more so that they have come to me first. I've been trying to be more out there and talk to new people but it's just very different to me that i don't know how to. like i don't know how to make friends. i know how to talk to my current friends but i don't know how to start up a normal conversation with somebody new. and when i do, i feel like I'm annoying them or something. i don't like being the more shy person in class. it's not cute or mysterious at all. i'd much rather have fun and laugh and talk and spend my days outside with people rather than being cooped up in my room all the time, like you said. and I'm not even studying or anything. I'm just doing whatever i feel like. i wish it wasn't like that, i wish i wasn't like this. i wish that i was social and can make friends easily. and me and my family is a very complicated topic. ever since covid, it messed up me and my family's relationship. my brother and i are always in our rooms, and i try not to be but when i have nothing else to do that's where i am. and my mother is always downstairs watching tv and sleeping on the couch. and my dad is always working, even when he's got off work he's doing something for that. i feel like my family is not really a family. I've tried to spend more time with my family but my mom has mellowed out because of medication she's taking for bipolar disorder. my dad has never showed his emotions a lot; he grew up with many siblings and a single mother who had to always work to provide for her family, so he kind of raised himself and didn't always feel love that he should've. and my brother is just a guy in his room. my brother and i also grew up with screens. it's made us kind of lazy and not always doing what we're supposed to be doing or not spending time with each other. my parents are extremely lenient too, so much that i wish sometimes they'd be a little more strict, that they let my brother and i do almost anything. and i feel like I'm the only one who's even trying to help us come together. and I'm not even the parent. I'm just a kid.

    I have a similar regret but this happened in my first year of college. Just regret that I didn't really had enough hobbies and I would always be focused on work yeah I had fun with my friends from college but it was always on campus I wish at the beginning I had a bit more fun once in a while. Also with past hobbies of mine like going to the gym and playing video games pretty much disappeared because I felt to stressed to give any time for myself that wasn't academics. At least for this year I'm going to try to do better and have a more balanced life.

    Damn bruh this is really eye opening to me since the only thing I wish right now is locked in and got a 4.0. I’m pretty much in the opposite boat. Just started senior year and have a 3.0 flat rn. I went out to dinner with my family last night and completely broke down calling myself a failure of a child and how I should’ve locked in before it was too late. But my parents being the best parents ever (obvi bias) told me to 1. Accept I made the mistake and learn from it 2. Stay in the present moment and not to regret the past as it was a learning opportunity. (Kinda like you said!) 3. You just have to put pen to paper and work. That’s the only way you have success. They’re not straight up telling me to grind, they’re just saying that I order to have a positive output, you need to have that effort to put in. And 4. I almost forgot: be optimistic no matter what. Being depressed and staying in the past will do nothing good and we all know this. Ask yourself, “Ok this didn’t work, what’s next? Do I have another opportunity to redeem myself?” I feel like this can make us all stronger inside. Thanks for making this video man. All of what I just said happened last night and it seems like gods work to recommend me this video. Sure, I messed up my chances of going into a good college for freshman year, but hey! Be optimistic! I hope I really do lock in (healthily) from here on out and I wish you the best too!

    Having a balanced life is important. You should allot time for study, physical, spiritual and social life. The key is to know how to maintain all those parts of life during special seasons of life, like midterms, finals etc. Don’t be discouraged about the work you put in in the past. You may look around and see a lot of people who ended up where you are right now, but did not put in as much studying in high school. The reality is that getting in is not the same thing as finishing strong. The work you did has prepared you to do more than just arrive in the first week of class. You will be finishing strong long past when others have given up. Hang in there, have fun, read the Bible every day.

    Undergrad is highly overrated if you are planning on attending grad school. I attended Cal State Fullerton and then attended Northwestern med school. If attending grad school, attended the cheapest and least competitive undergrad. Then attend the best grad school you can. No one ever asks or mentions undergrad. It’s a stepping stone degree.

  • @Beck-Stein

    Hi. Great video. I'm a MS3 here in Texas and I have to say you made some great insights. Traditional med student if that means anything to you. You are right in that the premed process can be quite stressful. Juggling classes, extracurriculars, shadowing, volunteer, studying for the MCAT, life, family, friends, research, professor relationships and/or anything I missed. But nowhere in this huge list of important application items is where you went to college. It composes 1 singular line in your application which says where your credits are from. That is it. Me personally, I went to a pretty no-name undergraduate college and I still made it as well as many of my friends. (I also have friends here in med school who graduated from UTD). I think for high school students who are interested in medicine and are wondering where to go to for college. My biggest piece of advice is to not sweat the IVY league programs, or the MS/MD programs or whatever. If you get accepted, great. But honestly, just go somewhere that you think you can be successful at. I applied to just 2 schools. UT Austin and the place I ended up going to. I figured that Ivy League was just not in the books for me given my SAT and resume. And I felt that everywhere else was pretty much equivalent, in terms of 'prestige'. (There are nuances to this. Eg. UT affiliated med schools tend to accept a lot from UT Austin. BUT, that could just be because they have high volume). So I thought about it and I felt that I would get lost and lose focus at UT Austin. The smaller school (<1500 total students) just fit my vibe better. (It also was likely easier to distinguish myself). I'm not gonna say that smaller schools are better. They just fit my personality better and provided an environment best suited for me. For others, going to a large university brings its own advantages. Networking, opportunity, community. The takeaway is to please consider all the aspects of a college and reflect on who you are as a person and what you want out of a school. And please remember, its what you do in college that matters. My HS stats (Grad in 2018): 1350 SAT, ~3.9 GPA, 4/350ish in class. UIL COMP SCI + SCIENCE. NHS. Literally like 30 hrs of volunteering. 7 AP courses with all 4s. Yeah, not the most outstanding app is it.

    Is a 97.5% a 4.0 GPA? I am kind of confused by the GPA scale and if you could explain it to me that would be helpful. Also, is it feasible to want to start research and compete in science fairs as a sophomore who has yet to find a mentor to help with this research?

    • @premed_george
      @premed_george 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So a 4.0 GPA basically means you had all As in high school. your weighted GPA is calculated with grades you receive from each class all weighted differently depending on the difficulty of the class. while ur unweighted gpa is just ur standard 4.0 scale gpa. but keep in mind that different schools have diff ways of calculating. hope this helps!

    I did a research paper on how financial aid is fueling the price increase for colleges. The game became more favorable for low income and high income vs middle income students because middle income families dont qualify for as many financial aids vs low income and less likely to donate large sums of moneys like how high income do it. The real tier list of who has the hardest time getting in and affording school is middle income, low income, and high income. And with regards to student debt, alot of it will ruin the student future. If the debt is higher than your salary, your aggregate income will be the same as someone who got a 2 year A.S degree for at least 6 years. If you pay minimum balance only, it would take 20 years to over come an A.S degree. This is horrible.

    I semi agree. I do feel like that there could be some feeling that some American universities do have some flaws, but I don’t think of college admissions is trying to be “rigged.” I think universities are trying to give everyone an equal opportunity not trying to supress the ones that have had an advantage. I really like math since it’s straight forward most of the time and I feeling like english course really require a lot of focus, patience, and not really any area to fidget with so I don’t like it so much, so take advanced math courses but I someday hope to go into orthopedics but I am a little scared about how long it would take. Also I have been hearing so many people dis African Americans on the internet that they get more cause they are Black including a better chance of getting into university completely ignoring the fact that once upon a time we couldn’t even step foot into universities. And they are complaining about us “stealing their jobs” and the only reason why we get our jobs are “because we’re Black.” Which may be true but it’s also true that African Americans have had to work 2x as hard to get anywhere. And a lot of videos are saying that universities are racist against Asians when they didn’t get in but there are BIGGER problems with African American racism that isn’t being addressed. So when I hear about college admissions being rigged, I think about this. I am not trying to be rude or anything but I just want to address this.

    Good advice. My college student was slow to learn the value of goi g to the prof with questions and extra credit. Finally realized what a waste of time it was to not utilize office hours.

      yea ofc, I am glad you liked the video! While I don't have a list, consider making a profile on scholarships.com, studentscholarships, and fastweb scholarships. That way you get personalized scholarships for you and get newsletters every week. hope this helps!

    In Australia, we don't have the Ivy League system, but the best universities in Melbourne. Australia is Melbourne University by far and Monash in second. The school system has really scary similarities. Only white people benefit from affirmative action.
