W166 X166 GLE/GLS/ML/GL 3 to 12 COLOR AMBIENT LIGHT UPGRADE
Low level technical how-to video for upgrading your current 3 color ambient lighting in the w166/x166 Mercedes-Benz models to 12 color palette on factory COMAND unit.
***UPDATE***
This kit is no longer available through the mentioned vendor. However, there are many kits available through other vendors. The kit I installed required tapping into the CAN Bus at the passenger kick panel and fuse box to power the dash and footwell lighting. Other kits require the addition of pins to the A pillar-to-passenger door connector in order to use the door module to power the aforementioned lights.
Please keep in mind that additional coding is required in order to unlock the 12 color options in the factory COMAND unit. The OBD2 module can be purchased from many vendors and is reusable to not only code this feature but many others on many other models. I will be posting a separate video explaining the process as it can be tedious. Alternatively, an independent specialist may be able to code your vehicle.

I want to ask you , are the dip switches on those small boxes the same on the ML w166 as in your Gle w166 , and do I need to code at the end to work or just is plug and play , by the way thanks very helpful video 👍🏻
Hi there and sorry for the late response. Dip switches depend on the kit you purchase. ML does not require coding.

Thank you! Yes, the OBD module is used with an App called WeChat. It is all in Chinese so navigating the app can be tricky, but if you have a tablet or another phone, you can open Google Lens to translate. The seller will provide further instructions

Yes, but you will need to change the colors on the instrument cluster. It will only show 3 colors but if you keep scrolling, the colors will continue changing

Hi mate. Just wanted to say a huge thanks as this video helped me install on my w166. However its stuck on red and i cant change using the steering controls. Also when plug in computer it says ambient light fault. But its working, unfortunately stuck on red

Brother. I have a 2014 ML with no original ambient light. I would like to have one installed and live on NYC, do you know of any EFFICIENT shop I can get this installed? I just got the kit and I had a question regarding the dip switch setting, I have a 2017 GLS 450, do I use the same up, up, down, up setting?
Yes sir! They both use the same COMAND unit and CAN protocol so it’s identical to the GLE.

@@theYujinsLessons1 ok, you will need to have the COMAND system coded to include the 12 color palette if you want to change the colors on the screen like the factory setup. Otherwise you can buy universal modules that you can control with an app on your phone

You didn't do footwell?
I didn’t. This customer requested that I leave the footwell lighting as is because when you replace the factory light housing with the ambient lighting, you lose the factory footwell illumination. That was more important to him. Granted, they would still illuminate in color, but he preferred the warm white lighting. Footwell lighting is easy though. The harness connects to the same harness/module as the dash lighting. Routing of wires is done through center console and down the sides of the transmission tunnel behind the carpet. Be sure to leave enough slack under the seat to allow for forward and backward adjustment of the seat. For a factory-like installation, remove front footwell carpeting and route wires through cable channels instead.

Did you ever post the video on programming the system with the OBD module?
Im sorry, I never did. The process is confusing to most and requires the seller to send you an invitation to WeChat App. It is all in Chinese. I cannot endorse this process. Coding your vehicle is something that should be done with care as there is always the possibility of damaging your unit. Should the aftermarket streamline the process, I would be happy to produce an instruction video. Or at least make the app in a universal language. Google lens works well, but it becomes quite frustrating if you don’t have another device to translate in real-time.

Hi! In US GL became GLS in 2017. Not sure if that is different in other countries. Where do you change your colors now? In the cluster or on the screen? If in the cluster, yes. If on the screen, such as the GLE in the video, you will need to program.
How can I buy this kit? And can I get it installed by a MB professional? And will this work on a GLS550?
Unfortunately, the seller no longer has them available. There are other kits available that require some re-pinning of one of the door connectors. Take a look at some of the comments and ask for suggestions. There are some good folks on here that I’ve helped. Good luck!

Hi Don! Sounds like you got the kit that requires you to run the dash light harness through the passenger A pillar/door boot and plugs into the same module the door uses. You will need to add some pins to the connector between the A pillar and door.
@@iconam9283 is there room to trill through the connector to run those 4 wires?
@@dusaintel no need and I would never recommend that. There are extra pin slots in that connector that will allow for the addition of said pins. Your kit should have come with some and if it didn’t, CKM has done you a disservice. Contact him about this. He is usually pretty good about replying.

@@dusaintel you’re welcome! Happy to help. Before you put all your door panels back on, please verify with him that dip switches are set to your specific model. Because these kits can be used with various models, it is important to set each module or the “master module” to the correct setting. Your kit might be different, but doesn’t hurt to ask just in case.

@@WaveyKat that’s great! Glad this was a good reference for you! And yes, parts can be fragile. I always recommend disassembly be done in a climate controlled environment. Hey there! Have you checked in ambient light settings to make sure brightness is not turned to “0”?

@@bigwilito ok. Is your interior light switch on the overhead control panel in the middle or left position? And yes, this kit will work on your vehicle. You will need to code the COMAND unit to reflect all 12 colors.

Hi Tony, thanks for watching! For your 2013, you can order any kit made for the w212 or w218. Take a look on eBay. You won’t need to program because you currently change your colors on the instrument cluster. It will still only show you current 3 colors, but if you continue to scroll, it will continue changing colors. The seller I used to promote doesn’t sell the kit I’m referring to. Installation will be a little different, but overall, it is very similar.
Hi, I recently installed a kit on my ML63. The doors are perfect, but my dash ambient lighting isn't turning on any longer. When I first installed it the dash ambient lighting was dim and it sometimes would be a different color than the doors when it was actually working. The abmient lighting would also flicker sometimes.. Now the dash lights dont seem to want to turn on at all. Doors are perfect and have continued to be. Could you give me some pointers? I added you on Instagram as well. Your video was helpful during my install!
I hate to hear that, man. Check all connections relating to the dash harness. Does your dash lighting have its own module? If so, it could be the module. I’ve run into that before. If you’re sharing a door module, but the door lighting is good, then swap connectors and see if your issue moves to the door.
I had an issue with the dash light being a different colour during the install, it turned out that on of the pins for the wire wasn’t pushed into the plug properly (the plug between door and cabin). Once o fixed this the problem was gone. I would check those pins as the modules in your doors are all working, it can only be the pins not connecting

Hey Nick! Looks like Endless DIY is out of stock and have been for a while. If you do a quick Ali Express search, you will find some kits on there. Most of the ones I’ve seen on there only have 4 modules which require a little extra work as you have to pin one of the door connectors so that you can use a door module for the dash and footwell lighting. It’s not bad, though. I won’t post a link because I don’t endorse any products that I haven’t purchased myself or installed. Before you purchase, make sure the seller will support you as 2016+ GLE will require some coding. Please watch the video in its entirety and listen closely as I explain. This kit should cost you no more than $150-$200. I’m happy to help you through the install as I have many others. Tips are always welcomed!

I saw in the video that you are connecting the dash trim light to a new module? Please explain to me. 2- for the foot light (4 of them) they will be connected to one of the front door module right? .erceds dealership said this kit wasn't plug and play for the 2019 Mercedes AMG GLE 63s base. Had to return it.
They are correct. 2019 GLE is w167 not w166

Just got my kit installed in my 2014 ML550. What a nightmare haha. It’s almost the same as the GLE except Had to run the RGB wires through the door jamb Oem wire connector. That was half the job right there. Thanks for the video. I couldn’t have done it without this video for reference.
